Rahu and Ketu in conjunction with the other planets

Like the other planets, Rahu and Ketu enter into relations with the other planets through conjunctions, through aspects, or by standing in the signs or nakshatras of those planets. If Rahu stands in the sign of Gemini, for instance, this points to a strong link between Rahu and Mercury, the lord of Gemini, and during Rahu's period the influence of Mercury will be felt.

In the same way, the placement of the nodes in nakshatras colours them with the properties of the planet that lords the nakshatra. If Rahu stands in Bharani (a nakshatra of Venus), for instance, it will also be coloured with the properties of Venus, and in Rahu's period the indications of Venus will show themselves as well.

That is, the lord of the sign and of the nakshatra in which the nodes stand has a combined influence on the behaviour of Rahu and Ketu in the chart.

If a planet stands in the same sign as Rahu or Ketu, this is called a conjunction (a yoga), no matter how many degrees separate them. The closer they are to one another, however, the stronger the mutual influence. If there are 5 degrees or fewer between them, the effect of the conjunction will be at its greatest.

Rahu increases the energy of the planet with which it is linked through a yoga, while Ketu disperses the planet's energy.

The conjunction of Rahu and the Sun

Self-assertion or heightened selfishness, self-exaltation, arrogance, a striving for independence, a refusal to accept authority, conflict with the authorities. It gives success abroad or in connection with foreigners. The sign of the zodiac in which this conjunction takes place gives it an additional colouring:

• In the fiery signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) Rahu + the Sun particularly strengthens the ego and makes the person a rebel and a revolutionary.
• In the earthy signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) Rahu + the Sun makes the native excessively practical, materialistic or critical.
• In the airy signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) Rahu + the Sun is a softened combination, with less selfishness.
• In the watery signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) Rahu + the Sun strengthens creativity, imagination and the emotions.

The conjunction of Rahu and the Moon

The conjunction Rahu + the Moon strengthens the lunar energy and the mind. Extrasensory abilities and heightened intuition may show themselves; this is especially so in the watery signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) and in Aquarius. If the Moon is weak by sign or by house (in the sign of Scorpio or in the 6th, 8th or 12th houses), this may cause mental disorders, fears, neuroses, psychoses, nightmares and emotional imbalance. A leaning towards hallucinations, paranoia and a wish for solitude may show themselves.

When the Moon is strong, this combination will strengthen the house in which the yoga stands. In the 12th house, for instance, Rahu + the Moon may make the person a seer or a prophet, and may give life abroad.

The conjunction of Rahu and Mars

The combination Rahu + Mars is also called Vijaya yoga, which means a striving for victory by any means and a lack of scruple about them. It strengthens the energy of Mars — the person needs to be constantly in action. The other side of it: aggression, cruelty, insensitivity.

When the link between Rahu and Mars comes about through an aspect, it shows itself more gently. This combination strengthens the non-living indications of the house but spoils the living ones. In the 4th house, for instance, it may give real estate and strong intuition, but will create trouble with the mother and destroy inner peace, and may make the native cunning and cruel.

For Albert Einstein, Mars + Rahu in the 8th in Capricorn gave unique research abilities: he made a discovery of world importance.

The conjunction of Rahu and Mercury

It strengthens the reasoning mind, linguistic, communicative and writing abilities, wit and resourcefulness; the yoga Rahu + Mercury shows itself best in Gemini, Virgo and Aquarius.
Helena Blavatsky, for instance, had Rahu and Mercury in the 3rd — a medium and a writer. Edgar Cayce (the American mystic, medium and seer) had Rahu + Mercury in the 8th house.

If Mercury is damaged, this may make the native a swindler and a schemer, or else he will pointlessly accumulate information, send spam, and spread gossip, rumours and disinformation. In the chart of Sergei Mavrodi, the founder of the «MMM» financial pyramid, for instance, Rahu aspects Mercury exactly — degree for degree — while in the D9 chart Rahu, Mercury and Saturn are joined in Aries in the 6th under a sign aspect of Mars.

The conjunction of Rahu and Jupiter

The combination Rahu + Jupiter gives material expansion and heightened practicality in the earthy signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn); in Sagittarius and Aquarius — charity; in Virgo and Gemini — the development of the reasoning mind.

When Rahu and Jupiter are linked through mutual aspects, this gives success in teaching, in writing and in philosophy. Bernard Shaw, for instance, had Rahu and Jupiter in Pisces — a philosopher and a writer. For Mick Jagger (the front man of the «Rolling Stones»), Rahu + Jupiter in Cancer in the 3rd house gives astonishing energy — he has been leaping about the stage for more than 50 years.

But there is a fundamental contradiction between Jupiter and Rahu, since Jupiter is law and Rahu lawlessness. If Jupiter is weakened, this combination may create trouble with the law for the native.

The conjunction of Rahu and Venus

Rahu + Venus gives a strong desire for comfort and luxury, success in the field of Venus, strong lust and uncontrolled desires.

If Venus is strong, this will give compassion and a love of people. In the horoscope of Jesus Christ, for instance, Venus with Rahu stands in the 3rd house in Scorpio — love for brothers and sisters.

Sigmund Freud had Rahu + Venus in the 7th house in Aries. «Sex is the basis of everything» — such was his philosophy.

The conjunction of Rahu and Saturn

It strengthens Saturn, the capacity for work and endurance, but may give a very emotional and even depressive nature in the watery signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). In the earthy signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) it may give practicality but emotional dryness and hardness (if there is a link with Mars). In the airy signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) it may give a philosophical, detached nature — especially in Aquarius. In the fiery signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) it may give dictators, politicians or fanatics.

Usually the combination Rahu + Saturn creates difficulties for the indications of the house in which it stands, but afterwards the situation gradually improves. In the 2nd house, for instance, it may give great financial trouble at first, which gradually goes away. Even so, this combination gives a good effect only for the non-living indications of the house; the living ones suffer.

The conjunction of Ketu and the Sun

Ketu + the Sun is a spiritual combination. It destroys the false ego. Introspection, inner insights, spiritual vision. A deep bond with the father. But if the Sun is strong — excessive self-confidence; if the Sun is weak — a lack of self-confidence.

Ketu directs the energy of a planet inward, unlike Rahu, which gives outward expansion.

The conjunction of Ketu and the Moon

Ketu + the Moon points to developed emotions and a subtle psychic bond with the mother. If the Moon is weak — fears, neuroses, possession by spirits, manias, an interest in magic. If the Moon is strong — extrasensory abilities and heightened spirituality.

If Ketu stands in a trine (the 1st, 5th or 9th house) from the Sun or the Moon, this often gives high spirituality.

The conjunction of Ketu and Mars

Ketu + Mars gives heightened impulsiveness and the presence of «Martian» talents. Such a person goes to extremes, from heightened energy to a complete loss of strength. There may be heightened aggressiveness, vengefulness, coarseness and intolerance. But Ketu may «turn» the energy of Mars inward, and the native will fight with himself.

The positive side of this combination is a very penetrating mind, high logic, the ability to concentrate attention, and deep wisdom. It shows itself especially positively in Virgo, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Pisces. Mark Twain, for instance, had Ketu + Mars in Virgo — a sharp mind strengthened by the analytical properties of Virgo.

The combination Ketu + Mars shows itself especially negatively in Aries and Scorpio — from reckless nobility in Aries to malicious glee in Scorpio.

The conjunction of Ketu and Mercury

If Mercury is strong, the combination Ketu + Mercury gives inborn Mercurial talents, unconventional thinking and a gift for languages. If Mercury is weak, it may give nervous breakdowns, hinder the work of the mind, produce mistakes in calculations, and make the person a cunning scoundrel.

Ketu + Mercury may produce a quiet genius whose mind is turned inward, or a fault-finder who is displeased with everything yet cannot understand the causes of his displeasure, since his mind (Mercury) is dispersed by the energy of Ketu.

If Mercury is strong, this combination gives a deep understanding of the indications of the house in which it takes place.

The conjunction of Ketu and Jupiter

Ketu + Jupiter: fortune is unstable, success gives way to failure. It may lead to a fall in attempts at expansion, and this happens more often in the signs of Jupiter; Hitler, for instance, had Jupiter + Ketu in the 3rd house in Sagittarius, and his military expansion failed.

The combination Ketu + Jupiter may also give cruelty, hypocrisy and dogmatism in religion or philosophy.

With a strong Jupiter the native may have the ability to do things without preparation, spontaneously, since an inborn wisdom is present (the fruits of work on Jupiter from the past). Such people may come out with brilliant thoughts and revelations; they may be «spiritual naturals» and have an inborn leaning towards teaching.

The conjunction of Ketu and Venus

Ketu + Venus means that the person worked with the energies of Venus in the past; he may have an inborn talent in the arts; he is unusual in love and eccentric in showing his emotions.

On the negative side it may give disappointments in love and in marriage. The native may rush from one extreme to the other, from a striving for comfort to severe austerity.

A native with the conjunction Ketu + Venus often prefers platonic love, especially when this combination takes place in Scorpio, Aquarius or Pisces. He prefers «universal love» — he loves everyone more than anyone in particular.

In the house where this combination stands, extremes often show themselves; if Ketu + Venus stands in the 2nd house, for instance, there may be tendencies from poverty to wealth.

The conjunction of Ketu and Saturn

Ketu + Saturn points to deeply rooted qualities of Saturn and an inborn pessimistic outlook. It gives a leaning towards melancholy, depression, stinginess and an earthbound outlook; it gives a spirit of fundamentalism and of blind adherence to tradition (Saturn is tradition). It is hard to accept the new; conservatism. If Saturn in conjunction with Ketu is weak — idleness, laziness, neglect of duty.

The combination Ketu + Saturn usually spoils the indications of the house. It may give fatalism and the inevitability of failure in the affairs of the house where this combination takes place. An aspect of Jupiter can soften the negative influence.

The positive side of the conjunction Ketu + Saturn is that it gives success in work that calls for precision and punctuality. It gives a deep philosophical understanding in the signs of Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces. It may give an inborn spirit of renunciation of the themes of the house where it takes place, on the principle of «well, if it is not there, then it is not needed».

Captured planets

A planet in conjunction with, in opposition to (in the 7th house from) or in square (the 4th and 10th houses from) the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu is considered «captured» if the degree of that planet is less than the degree of Rahu or Ketu within 5 degrees. This combination lowers the benevolence of the natural indications of the «captured» planet and is felt throughout life. During the periods and sub-periods it is felt more keenly.
