The Sun in the 4th house
These are educated people; they own land. Usually they are not far from their home and like to work indoors. They have a good intellect, they have a small number of close friends, they have an unfinished education and many favourable opportunities to travel. They own houses and maintain friendly relations with important people. These people have a kind heart; they work for the good of the state or for the sake of some good cause. (Tom Hopke)
Surya (the Sun) in the fourth house
The Sun in the fourth house: Much travel, a strong intellect, the ownership of real estate. People with such a placement of the Sun in the horoscope are kind and warm-hearted, but have few close friends. They work for the good of the state or engage in public affairs. (Indubala)
The Sun in the fourth house: heartless, egoistic, insincere, problems with blood pressure.
The Sun in the 4th or 10th house in the sign of Aquarius may cause a heart disease in the father.
Problems with the stomach.
In a woman’s chart it spoils family life.
It indicates the receipt of an inheritance. (Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)
The Sun in the 4th house gives the person domestic problems. In the 4th house the Sun is found in those who were born at night. At night the Sun gives no light; accordingly, in the 4th house it does not bring favourable results. Such people develop conflicts with their parents and relatives. A bad placement for the mother. Such a Sun does not give family happiness. Problems connected with real estate arise; it is difficult for them to have their own housing and they want to take real estate away from others. If the Sun is damaged here, and its mahadasha comes, in that period great problems connected with real estate may arise for him. They are not afraid to commit sins, and they are also surrounded by not very good people. They may develop problems with the lungs and the heart. If the Sun is in a favourable sign, these indications may not manifest vividly. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)
“Bhrigu Sutra” 1.43-50
If the Sun is in the 4th house, the owner of the horoscope will possibly have damage to or defects of his limbs. He will be egoistic and hostile towards people. At 32 he will find surroundings congenial in spirit, where he will subsequently become respected and will attain a high position. However his financial affairs will not be so good. With a strong lord of the 4th house (in a position of exaltation or in its own sign), and also with it placed in a quadrant or a triad, the owner of the horoscope will have
enormous material riches and plots of land and palanquins (prestigious means of transport). With an unfavourable aspect to the lord of the 4th house or with its placement in bad
houses, the owner of the horoscope will have poor means of transport. He will have to live in others’ houses, and he will have no landed property of his own.
Comments:
The placement of the Sun in the 4th house is considered unfavourable in Vedic astrology, and even with good aspects and a fortunate placement in a sign, the Sun in the 4th house gives the owner of the horoscope a life consisting of the vicissitudes of fate. The “Bhrigu Sutra” attaches enormous importance to the placement of the lord of the 4th house. This is a very important rule in Vedic astrology: the prosperity of a house depends on the placement of its lord.
The 4th house denotes academic education, property, landed property, houses, flats, the family and the mother of the owner of the horoscope. The Sun, being a ruinous planet, will bring the owner of the horoscope problems in family life and sufferings for his mother, even in the case where the Sun is in Leo or has a
favourable influence, or the lord of the 4th house and the matru karaka the Moon are well placed. A person who has the Sun occupying the 4th house of the horoscope will be endowed with a good intellect, but will not obtain a completed academic education, which follows from the unfavourable character of the Sun. Influencing the 10th from the 4th house, the Sun will endow the owner of the horoscope with a striving to work for the good of society and to take an active social position. The 4th house is the sixth counting from the 11th house, the house of friends, and the placement of an unfavourable Sun in it speaks of a small number of close friends.
Other opinions concerning the Sun in the 4th house:
“Brihat Jataka” — an unhappy life
“Phaladipika” — having no land, house, friends or relatives, the owner of the horoscope will be unhappy and will lose his paternal property.
“Saravali” — misfortune and poverty await the owner of the horoscope. He will lose everything he has and will find himself in the service of an evil, immoral king.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — defeat by enemies, anxiety of mind and enforced residence in a foreign land await a person who has the Sun occupying the 4th house of the horoscope.
Note:
All the classical texts note unfavourable characteristics of the placement of the Sun in the 4th house, however the “Bhrigu Sutra” draws particular attention to the placement of the lord of the 4th house, which allows correct final conclusions to be drawn.

The results of the placement of the Sun in the fourth house
If the 4th Bhava is occupied by Surya, then the person will be deprived of happiness, means of transport and wealth. He will destroy (spend) the paternal property and will change his place of residence many times.
Comments: If Surya (the Sun) is in the Rashi Tula (in the sign of Libra) in the 4th house, then the person will certainly obtain the above-mentioned results, because in such a placement Surya, being the ruler of the 2nd Bhava — the Bhava of the paternal property and wealth — is placed in the 4th Bhava in debilitation. But even if it is not weakened in a sign of debilitation, nevertheless, as a rule, the person will change his place of residence. The Sun in the 4th house gives renown and a good reputation in society, and a high status (position) compared with other people. When Surya is placed in debilitation, the person, as a rule, loses peace of mind and becomes restless.
The Sun in the 4th house
The 4th house is responsible for happiness, inner peace, the experiencing of emotions, cosiness, housing, the mother and relatives. Being in this house, the Sun gives a strong identification with these values of life. The person strives to protect and care for his kin and not infrequently suffers from this very thing, if the relatives behave capriciously or ungratefully.
At times such people become sociopaths and strive for seclusion in their own personal space. They may organise their activity in such a way that they are predominantly at home. They value family traditions and foundations.
The Sun, being a frankly masculine planet, does not much like being in the more feminine 4th house. In connection with this, emotional closedness and inhibition in one’s experiences may be observed.
For a man this placement has certain difficulties in work, since he is strongly attached to the home and cannot open up anywhere except the latter.
If the owner of this combination is a woman, then she almost always experiences difficulties in releasing her emotions and experiences. Thoughts are preserved for a long time and require comfortable circumstances in order to come out.
Such a placement in a child testifies to a change of parental roles: the mother most likely dominates, and the father is a led person.
A favourable the Sun in the 4th house:
- Confidence in emotions
- Comfortable housing and transport
- A quality upbringing
- Self-possession
- A leadership position among relatives
- Patronage from the mother and relatives
- Protection from the negative influence of society
- The creation of a pleasant atmosphere in the collective
- The creation of cosiness in rooms
An unfavourable Sun:
- Strong suspiciousness
- A susceptibility to negative emotions
- A painful dependence on relatives
- Pressure on the part of the mother
- An inability to abstract oneself from external circumstances
- Emotional clichés and templates
- An absence of inner peace
- It is difficult to relax
- Sycophancy and toadying
- Constant moves (encountered at times)
- Problems with property
Health:
With a strong Sun — a healthy and hardy heart. A robust chest. A beautiful back in the chest area. A magnificent, aristocratic bearing.
With a weak Sun — intercostal neuralgia, cardiac pathologies, a weak heart, arrhythmia, a low level of immunity in the chest area, sometimes a displacement of the organs in the thoracic region, chronic osteochondrosis, curvature of the spine in the thoracic region, sometimes a hunched back, intermittent, shallow breathing. In women problems with the breasts and with feeding. Protrusions, displacements of the discs in the thoracic region. A stooping posture.
Conclusion:
The placement of the Sun in the 4th house tends towards the negative, since this is not at all the house where such an imperious and strong planet can open up fully, but given a good, supportive horoscope, there may be quite good fruits. For example, an experienced landowner, a family business, affairs connected with the renting/selling of real estate and cars and so on. Personally I have not often encountered truly positive characteristics, but they do exist.
Always analyse the natal chart carefully in order to draw the right conclusion about this placement. Also look at the divisional chart D4.
