How to calculate a Vedic birth chart online for free

  1. Enter a name and a date of birth in the form above. Instead of a person you can chart an event: a company registered, a wedding, a move.
  2. Give the time of birth as precisely as you can — the ascendant, the house cusps and the navamsha all shift with the minutes. If the time is unknown, start with the rectification questionnaire: it narrows the interval down from the events of your life.
  3. Start typing your city and pick it from the prompt — latitude, longitude and the time zone in force on that date are filled in for you.
  4. Press «Get report». The chart is calculated on the server in seconds, opens straight away and stays in your account.

Calculating the chart and reading its interpretation costs nothing: there is no subscription and no payment for a report.

What the interpretation covers

  • Rasi (D1) — the main chart: planets by zodiac sign and house, the ascendant, the house lords and the aspects.
  • Divisional charts — D2 Hora (money), D3 Drekkana (character), D4 Chaturthamsha (property), D7 Saptamsha (children), D9 Navamsha (marriage and essence), D10 Dasamsa (work), D12 Dwadashamsha (parents).
  • Nakshatras — the lunar mansion of the birth with its pada and lord; each of the 27 nakshatras has a reading of its own.
  • Life periods — Vimshottari dashas with their antardashas, and sign-based periods: you see which planet runs the stretch of life you are in.
  • Ashtakavarga — the bindus of each planet and the sarvashtakavarga by sign: a numerical measure of how strong the houses are.
  • Planetary yogas — the combinations found in your chart, each linked to its entry among the planetary yogas.

How Vedic astrology differs from Western astrology

Jyotish measures the planets against the fixed stars — the sidereal zodiac. The gap between it and the tropical zodiac of Western astrology is called the ayanamsha, and it now runs to roughly 24 degrees, which is why a Vedic chart usually puts the Sun in the preceding sign. The second difference is the Moon and its nakshatra: the Vimshottari dashas, the life periods that Western astrology has no counterpart for, are counted from it. The third is the divisional charts — marriage, work and property are each checked in a varga of their own rather than in the main chart alone. A Jyotish reading therefore speaks not only of character but of when what the chart holds comes out.

AstroJyotish.info is a Vedic astrology reference with an online natal chart calculator. A chart is built on the server in seconds in the «Surya-Siddhanta» mode, the same mode used by Jagannatha Hora. We studied and re-implemented its calculation so that the principal positions of planets, houses, and signs can be obtained directly in a browser. Each result is accompanied by an explanatory passage that helps you read the chart step by step, compare its indicators, and understand how individual elements form a complete picture. The site brings together material on planets, houses, zodiac signs, nakshatras, yogas, and life periods, as well as a calendar of astrological dates and the charts of famous people. It can serve both as an introduction to Jyotish and as a resource for deeper study: articles explain essential concepts, tables make meanings easier to compare, and the completed chart provides a starting point for your own interpretation. Enter the date, exact time, and place of birth to calculate a chart and explore its detailed reading.

Frequently asked questions about the Vedic birth chart

How much does a Vedic birth chart cost here?

Nothing. The Jyotish chart is calculated online free of charge, interpretation included: no subscription, no payment for the report. There is no sign-up either — give an e-mail address in the form and the chart opens straight away.

Is this the same as a Janam Kundli?

Yes. «Janam kundli», «jataka», «Vedic horoscope» and «Vedic birth chart» are different names for the same chart of birth, cast in the sidereal zodiac. The calculator on this page builds exactly that — the wording changes nothing in the calculation.

What does «a chart with interpretation» mean?

Every indicator in the chart comes with an explanatory passage: what a planet means in that sign and house, what the Moon's nakshatra says, which planet runs the period of life you are in. The reading follows the chart in order, so you can work through it without prior study.

Do I need the exact time of birth?

It helps: the ascendant, the house cusps and the navamsha (D9) all shift with the minutes. A date and place without a time still give you a chart — the planets by sign and the Moon's nakshatra will be right, but the houses will be approximate. If the time is unknown, take the rectification questionnaire: it narrows the birth interval down from the events of your life.

Can I calculate a solar return chart?

The solar return is a Western technique; its Jyotish counterpart is called the varshaphala. The site does not build an annual chart yet: the year ahead is read from the Vimshottari dashas and antardashas, which are part of the free report and show which planet runs the stretch of life you are entering.

How closely does this match Jagannatha Hora?

The chart is calculated in the «Surya-Siddhanta» mode — the same one Jagannatha Hora uses. The calculation was re-implemented from scratch and the results were checked against the program's own tables: planetary positions, houses, nakshatras with padas and the divisional charts D2 to D12 agree.

How is Vedic astrology different from Western astrology?

Jyotish measures the planets against the fixed stars — the sidereal zodiac — rather than from the spring equinox. The gap, called the ayanamsha, runs to roughly 24 degrees, so the Sun usually moves back one sign. Jyotish also works with the lunar nakshatras, the divisional charts and the dasha periods, none of which Western astrology has.
