Uttara Ashadha Nakshatra
21. Uttara Ashadha (26°40′ of Sagittarius — 10°00′ of Capricorn)
Varahamihira: Anyone who has the Moon in Uttara Ashadha will be obedient and will know the rules of virtuous conduct, will be grateful, will have many friends, will remember the good deeds done to him and will, as a rule, be loved by all.
General indications: The symbol of Uttara Ashadha is an elephant’s tusk, and its deities are the 10 Vishvadevas, sons of the god Dharma (righteousness) and the goddess Vishva (universality, all). Their names in free translation are as follows. Goodness, Truth, Will, Mastery, Time, Desire, Firmness, the Ancestors, Brightness and the Summit (Acme) — all these are attributes of Uttara Ashadha.
The properties of Purva Ashadha are applicable to Uttara Ashadha as well, since one of them is the preceding (purva) and the other the following (uttara) part of one and the same nakshatra [or rather, two parts of one section of the zodiac — editor’s note]. The only difference between them is that Uttara Ashadha is more immersed in self-contemplation and possesses greater constancy and firmness than Purva Ashadha. It is also not as aggressive as its companion. If the lagna or the Moon is located in Uttara Ashadha, this often signifies honest, sincere people, respected and valued for their advice, who naturally become intermediaries and peacemakers.
The symbol of the elephant’s tusk leads some to the conclusion that this nakshatra is connected with Ganesha — the god with an elephant’s head and one tusk, called upon to bless new undertakings and to remove obstacles from the path. Since Uttara Ashadha also signifies new projects and ventures that become successful and well-established, this nakshatra, if well placed, gives those in its charge a talent for initiating new undertakings and the ability to bring these undertakings to the end, to their logical conclusion. If, however, it is badly placed, the native will most likely work anyhow from the very beginning and will not be able to complete the undertaking begun. The elephant’s tusk is sharp and can therefore pierce right through. Physical penetration may mean penetration into flesh (hunting, surgery) or movement in space with the aim of exploring the surroundings or discovering new lands. Penetration on the mental plane may mean incredible perspicacity as a trait of character.
Physiology and diseases: The hips; the lower back.
Professions, people and places of habitation: Courteous, elegant people with good manners. People who embody the ideals of the epoch. Military servicemen — both men and women. Hunters and people with keen hunting instincts. Warriors and wrestlers. Owners of horses and stables. Well-known doctors. Government employees. Ambitious, responsible people and people with organisational abilities. Pioneers, sappers.
Uttara Ashadha (Sanskrit: उत्तराषाढ़ा) is represented by two bright stars in the constellation Sagittarius, however the greater part of it is located in Capricorn.

The key concept
Creating various alliances for the general benefit; uniting and increasing one’s own merits by supporting the merits of other people.
Uttara Ashadha has a direct relation to kingship, rule and the duties it imposes. Fearlessness and a striving forward, will power and firmness are characteristic of it. At the same time elegance, traditionalism, authoritativeness, politeness and good breeding manifest in Uttara Ashadha. Usually Uttara Ashadha people are people with very good qualities, whose advice is heeded.
This nakshatra gives the ability to bring what has been begun to completion. It is very practical, since most of its quarters fall into the achievement-oriented sign of Capricorn. If the nakshatra is badly placed, a person may work in a slipshod way and not complete matters.
Uttara Ashadha pays much attention to structure and order, thanks to which those who are under its influence adhere to a respectable, at times even conformist manner of behaviour.
Its connection with the ancestors evokes deep respect for traditional values and a desire to defend them. However, the Saturnian influence of this nakshatra may make a person cruel and abrupt. It may speak of an intolerance of everything that does not correspond to the generally accepted idea of respectability. The spiritual and philosophical motivations of Uttara Ashadha are directed towards the search for practical solutions to life’s problems.
This nakshatra has little tolerance for behind-the-scenes influences and deceit. People who are under the strong influence of Uttara Ashadha are inclined to attract situations that throw down a multitude of challenges to them. On the spiritual level it gives a person a striving to pierce the veil of illusion in order to reveal the true nature of the soul.
Uttara Ashadha has a direct relation to the attainment of a high position in society, and also to leadership and the ruling class. They cooperate well, and thanks to this and to their friends they usually have renown and excellent organisational abilities. Also endurance, boldness and a readiness to work much and hard.
Under negative aspects — jealousy, manipulation, malice, anger; they cannot bear pain.
«People with the Moon in Uttara Ashadha are obedient and know the rules of virtuous conduct, are grateful, repay a favour with a favour, have many friends and are, as a rule, loved by all. Varahamihira»
Men
Uttara Ashadha men are well built and tall and have an attractive appearance. On the large head a long nose and clear eyes stand out.
Simplicity in communication, open-heartedness, refinement, and a kind-hearted and respectful attitude towards people — such are the traits of character of these men. They speak softly, are tactful and delicate, and avoid rudeness and abruptness. They believe in God and treat women respectfully. They are diligent in work, although they have to overcome their laziness. They are independent and do not like to submit, but neither do they exert pressure on others. Before taking a responsible decision they prefer to consult a person who is authoritative in the matter.
The motives of their behaviour are not always clear because they are secretive and open up not to everyone and not at once. They need recognition of their merits, otherwise they feel unhappy. If they have understood that they are wrong, Uttara Ashadha men will not be slow to apologise. From an early age they have to take great responsibility on their shoulders. They should be careful in choosing business partners. Success and stability usually come after the age of 32.
A happy childhood. With growing up come life’s difficulties. Family life is usually prosperous. A responsible and loving wife, but there may be problems connected with her health. There is no complete satisfaction from relations with the children.
Problems with the stomach and weak eyesight are possible.
Women
Uttara Ashadha women have large facial features, beautiful light eyes and healthy, strong teeth; stoutness and not very beautiful hair are possible. They are stubborn and prone to conflict. They prefer to lead a simple way of life and have a very strong religious feeling, and are inclined to observe the rules of religious life.
They are educated. They may work as teachers, bank employees, or in religious organisations.
Because of separation from their spouse they do not receive full happiness in family life.
The padas (quarters)
The 1st pada of the nakshatra Uttara Ashadha (26°40′ — 30°00′ of Sagittarius) falls into the navamsha of Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter. Righteousness, confidence, prudence, generosity, wisdom. Planets placed here give strong material and spiritual results. The Sun, Jupiter, Mars and Ketu possess the greatest strength in the first pada. Jupiter gives the best results.
The 2nd pada of the nakshatra Uttara Ashadha (00°00′ — 3°20′ of Capricorn) falls into the navamsha of Capricorn, ruled by Saturn. Planets placed here give nerves of iron, respect, education and devotion. The pada is focused on itself, on its personality and its expression in the outer world. Here the goal is more important than the means. Exaggerated attention to and attachment to worldly affairs and power structures may be noted. Mars and Saturn are best able to use the energy of this pada.
The 3rd pada of the nakshatra Uttara Ashadha (3°20′ — 6°40′ of Capricorn) falls into the navamsha of Aquarius, ruled by Saturn. The accent is on the accumulation of knowledge and material things. A strong attachment to the family. Planets here give good results if a person works towards attaining his goals by drawing in other people — teamwork is necessary for the effective functioning of this pada. Manifestations of rudeness and pride towards those around are possible. Rahu, Mercury and Saturn feel comfortable here. Saturn gives the strongest results.
The 4th pada of the nakshatra Uttara Ashadha (6°40′ — 10°00′ of Capricorn) falls into the navamsha of Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. This pada gives physical perfection, short trips, courage, generosity and truthfulness. Since a person tries to attain equilibrium, there is a constant conflict between material and spiritual values. At the present time the material often predominates. Planets placed here give an abundance of energy for attaining goals. The Moon, Mars and Saturn cope well with the energies of this pada.
The ruling planet
The chief ruler is the Sun, and therefore the ability to influence one’s surroundings reaches its apogee in this nakshatra. In the best case a person’s will turns out to be fully attuned to the will of the Universe, and thus all his actions on the earthly plane are performed without the involvement of the ego, in accordance with the Divine laws. In this nakshatra individuality is sacrificed to the benefit of the majority.
Since Uttara Ashadha is located in the signs of Sagittarius and Capricorn, Jupiter and Saturn have the most direct relation to it. The combination of the expansive Jupiter and the restraining Saturn symbolises moderation and practicality. The concrete practical actions undertaken here create the material world in accordance with the laws of the Universe.
The conjunctions Jupiter-Saturn, Sun-Jupiter, Sun-Saturn and Sun-Jupiter-Saturn carry an energy similar to the energy of Uttara Ashadha. Mercury, Venus and Jupiter, being in that part of the nakshatra which is located in Capricorn, may make a person materialistic if they do not act in their highest manifestation. All planets placed in Uttara Ashadha are inclined to excessive idealism unless a person’s will is in harmony with the will of the Universe. Any mistake made under the action of this nakshatra is multiplied many times over, since this nakshatra has an incredible ability to influence the material world.
