Not a very good placement for Mercury, because it is very hostile towards the Moon. Mercury in Cancer, even in the 1st house, without good aspects gives an excessive interest in knowledge. But the strength of Mercury may be suppressed by the emotions; the emotions may prevail over the intellect.
Each sign is responsible for some part of the body: Aries for the head, Taurus for the neck, Gemini for the arms and shoulders. Cancer is responsible for the chest. If Mercury is in Cancer, and if the person takes everything too emotionally, then the blow falls on the lungs or the heart; he may suffer a heart attack.
Since this is the 4th house, there may be problems with friends and with one's circle. Such a person may change his dwelling more often than others; as a rule such people move several times in their lives.
Among the positive characteristics: such a person has flexible thinking, he can perceive details very well and synthesise them, penetrate to the essence of things and single out the main point from a flow of speeches and statements.

Commentary: The sign of Cancer is considered hostile for Mercury. The point is that Cancer represents the instincts (emotions, feelings), while Mercury represents rationality (reason, logic, intellect). But as a rule the intellect is here defeated by the heart. Therefore it is probable that such a person will have an immoral character and an excessive fondness for sexual relations.
