Nakshatra Pushya

Date 04 Apr 2023
Nakshatra Pushya

The nakshatra Pushya (8th of the 27 nakshatras, 3°20′ -16°40′ of Cancer).

General indications: the symbol of Pushya («the Nourishing one») is an udder oozing milk, and its deity is Brihaspati, the planet Jupiter, who is the priest and preceptor of the gods. The old name of Pushya is Tishya («the Auspicious one»), and another synonym is Sidhya («the Prospering one») — both indicate its ability to nourish on all levels of being — on the physical, emotional, mental, material and spiritual. Pushya is associated with abundance, growth, affluence and generally with all the very best, by which fullness or stoutness may be implied. Pushya assists renown and popularity, but also selflessness and charity, that is, it acts exactly like a cow, which, as is known, gives its milk equally willingly to people and to its calf.

In the Rig Veda one more name of this nakshatra is mentioned — Tishya — the fortunate, happy, successful one: «There is one star which never disappears from the sky». Also Tishya is amla. In the Rig Veda Tishya is associated with a celestial archer who guards the celestial nectar — Soma (Amrita). This nakshatra looks like the point of an arrow. One of the symbols of this nakshatra is an arrow in a circle (the circle symbolises protection, the arrow — the protector). Amrita is also compared with Divine Knowledge, part of which is Jyotish.

Since the Moon by nature is a nurturing planet, the Moon in Pushya may indicate a very steadfast desire to nourish and to bring up, both in the bodily sense and in the emotional and mental. Other planets in Pushya often indicate a «nourishing» disposition, or a desire to receive care themselves in those spheres which they touch upon in a given horoscope, ruling one house or another. The positive qualities of natural benefics find themselves in demand here and flourish. The action of natural malefics in Pushya is cushioned, so that, although their outward appearance may remain very frightening, their inner nature becomes caring, and is softened. If the lord of the 7th house is placed in Pushya, then this may serve as an indication of a caring spouse; if the lord of the 5th house is placed here — then of caring children and so on.

The connection of Pushya with Brihaspati endows it with the right to have power over speech, the oratorical art, eloquence, wisdom, good fortune and aristocratism, and also over religious impulses and priestly abilities. Devotion and prayer, virtuous behaviour, calm of spirit, purity, truth, honour and philosophy — all these images are present in the portfolio of Pushya, although all this coexists in it with excessive orthodoxy, conservatism and an uncreative approach. If the lagna or the Moon are in Pushya, then the native often possesses a philosophical cast of personality, is religious and well read and may obtain benefit from higher-standing persons and structures of power, such as the government.

Physiology and diseases: the mouth, the face and the facial expressions.

Professions, people and places of habitation: aristocrats and highly placed persons: rulers, ministers and managing directors. Traders in foodstuffs and grain. The dairy branch. The clergy and those who engage in teaching spiritual disciplines: gurus, transpersonal psychologists and priests.

Pushya (Skt.: पुष्य) consists of three faint stars in the constellation of Cancer, belonging to the globular star cluster M 44.

Traditionally the name of the nakshatra is translated as «the nourisher», «the bringer», but there is an opinion that it means «flower».

The key concept of the nakshatra Pushya

To be one who nourishes; an abundance of life's bounties, kindness, love.

Pushya has an inclination and an ability to nourish, to cherish and to foster on all levels of being. It symbolises the place where we can, fearing nothing, rest in safety and peace. Pushya returns one to that blissful state which an infant experiences lying in its mother's arms. It is not surprising that all who are under the strong influence of this nakshatra are very caring, generous, kind, calm, ready to help in a difficult moment, and know how to be friends. Since the ruler of the nakshatra is Saturn, it gives reliability and fearlessness.

Wherever the energy of Pushya is directed, growth and expansion take place. This applies to any sphere — the emotional, creative, spiritual, material.

The nakshatra is located entirely in the constellation of Cancer, which conditions its attachment to family and home. Poorly developed Pushya natives care only about the well-being of their relatives and close ones; highly developed ones — about the well-being of the whole world. The negative side of the nakshatra manifests in the person shutting themselves up in their own cosy little world and not accepting anyone or anything beyond its bounds, becoming narrow-minded, fanatical in questions of religion and culture. Everything that does not correspond to the well-structured views and opinions of Pushya arouses in them suspicion and caution, but on the whole they try to preserve an even attitude to things. To most problems and situations Pushya natives react very reasonably. They are distinguished by common sense and realism.

Pushya natives are excellent workers, and patiently attain the goals they have set. They show respect for roots, foundations, traditions. They love to do the right things, to observe accepted standards and rules. They are hospitable, decent, polite, courteous, incapable of behaving vulgarly or defiantly. The negative aspect of Pushya makes the native sluggish, needy and dependent because of a lack of will-power.

The nakshatra has an expansive character, but acts without fuss. Planets placed in it give increase and expansion in those areas which they rule in the chart. Activity begun during the transit of the Moon through Pushya will give a good result, and the Moon in Taurus carries energies similar to the energies of this asterism. Pushya is connected with quickness of thought and, perhaps for this reason, is considered one of the best nakshatras for all kinds of trade and business.

Pushya allows a person to see things as a whole, to see the higher meaning in everything that happens, which is not given to everyone. Such qualities as conservatism, devotion, spirituality and sensuality may manifest.

If the Moon is weak, then Pushya will not give such progress in terms of spiritual development as it might have given.

«The Moon in Pushya gives an ability to control one's desires, erudition, wealth, a love of charitable activity and, as a rule, a benevolent attitude on the part of society» (Varahamihira).

Pushya men

Impeccable behaviour, a sincere desire to give, an ability to be grateful and to show their love make these men very attractive to those around them. They know how to react quickly to a change of situation. Sometimes because of mistrustfulness and an inclination to doubts they experience difficulties in taking hard decisions.

If they are encouraged and inspired, then they advance forward actively. But on hearing words of criticism, they lose enthusiasm and energy. In relationships they are often cautious, they fear strong attachments, and need freedom.

Failures in undertakings are caused by an inclination to take on a matter without considering whether they are able to carry it out. Therefore the best-suited sphere of activity is one where one must first concentrate and only then set about fulfilling the task. It is very important for them to see the fruits of their efforts. At work they more often receive thanks than reprimands.

They are able to resist any unlawful actions, are resolute, and consider that violators of the law must be punished in any case.

They almost always live far from their place of birth. Their work is connected with movement and travel.

They are distinguished by an attachment to their parents. As spouses they take talented, self-sufficient and to a certain degree conservative women. They expect support from them and receive it.

In childhood illnesses manifest more often than after 33 years. There is a risk of the appearance of gallstones and other diseases connected with the liver.

Pushya women

They cannot be called beautiful, but they have harmonious facial features, a charming smile. They are of average height and have a good build.

Their character is soft, they are subject to frequent changes of mood, and at the same time are obedient and loving. Often sincerity manifests in their behaviour. They are inclined to methodicalness and conservatism. They may live a very restless life.

In matrimony one of the causes of anxiety may be that these women express their inner emotions inadequately: they want to say much, but because of an innate bashfulness they say nothing at all. The situation can be corrected if they treat the husband a little more firmly, casting aside shyness and modesty, and being more open and straightforward.

Problems with the organs of respiration, breast cancer are possible.

The padas (quarters) of the nakshatra Pushya

The 1st pada of the nakshatra Pushya (3°20′ — 6°40′ of Cancer) falls into the navamsha of Leo, ruled by the Sun. It gives pride in one's family or origin, a concern for attaining universal attention, wealth. The luminaries in this pada bring strong positive results.

The 2nd pada of the nakshatra Pushya (6°40′ — 10°00′ of Cancer) falls into the navamsha of Virgo, ruled by Mercury. Here the industrious and obliging aspect of Pushya finds its expression. Since this is a pushkara-navamsha, all planets, with the exception of Venus, give good results here, at least on the material level.

The 3rd pada of the nakshatra Pushya (10°00′ — 13°20′ of Cancer) falls into the navamsha of Libra, ruled by Venus. The emphasis is on home, comfort, luxury and sociability. The shortcomings of the pada are superficiality and conformism. In it the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Saturn feel good.

The 4th pada of the nakshatra Pushya (13°20′ — 26°40′ of Cancer) falls into the navamsha of Scorpio, ruled by Mars. This is the pada of mantras and rituals. Here such negative qualities of the nakshatra manifest as dependence, an inclination to choose the position of a victim, fanaticism. In this quarter only an unafflicted Jupiter and Venus prosper.

The ruling planet of the nakshatra Pushya

Saturn — the chief ruler of Pushya — reveals through it its abilities for diligent service and for teaching the fundamentals. It cultivates in us patience and persistence through delays, restrictions.

The nakshatra also experiences a strong influence of the Moon. The Moon is emotions, the mind, and Saturn — stability, matter. Thus Pushya possesses emotional stability and a talent for the practical realisation of plans.

Saturn and the Moon think in broad categories, and support a mentality and values conducive to the development of an ideal civilised society, which makes Pushya the most socially oriented nakshatra. Those in whose natal chart the Moon and Saturn are strong become popular leaders today.

The conjunction Moon-Saturn-Jupiter carries an energy similar to the energy of Pushya. Positive results in this nakshatra are brought only by a well-placed Moon, Jupiter, Sun, Venus and Saturn.

THE EIGHTH STAR — PUSHYA 3° 20’ -16° 40’ OF CANCER

The Greek name is Karki. The nakshatra consists of three stars. Pushya is a «deva», a star of divine nature, ruled by Brihaspati, the god of the planet Jupiter and the priest of the demigods.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PEOPLE BORN UNDER THE NAKSHATRA PUSHYA

Pushya men

Men born under the influence of Pushya have no definite appearance. Sometimes there may be a scar or a black mole on the face.
They are soft-hearted, have a doubting character, and find it hard to take any decision. They have good manners, but use them only for egoistic purposes. Outside a «+», and inside a «-». These men do not respect others, but expect respect for themselves; they are afraid to form strong attachments; they love to dress well. All of the above and a desire for complete freedom in everything bring them into bad company. They often take on work without thinking whether they will be able to carry it out, and suffer failure in everything they do.

Eloquence, sweet words are their natural state. Usually they first speak much and beautifully, and only then set about the work. Even if they do not have a good education, in all questions they try to demonstrate their intellect.

Men born under the influence of Pushya are opponents of any idea going beyond the bounds of the law. In their opinion, all violators must be punished, and it does not matter whether they are friends or enemies. They perform the work entrusted to them sincerely and
diligently, but because of excessive self-assurance they often do not cope. Success may come to them in the theatre or in other arts, and also in trade and business.

Until 16 years — weak health and a poor material position; until 32 years instability and unsettledness continue, and from 33 years a comprehensive improvement sets in.

They have many problems in family life, and even in everyday expenses they will depend on other people. They are often compelled to live far from their family. From a wife they expect talents, conservatism in dress and in manners. They are attached to their parents, especially to their mother.

Diseases of the skin, of the lungs and bronchi, and also cancer are possible.

Pushya women

They are attractive and have regular facial features. They are religious, conservative, and act systematically and methodically. They are friendly, and respect elders. They are modest, secretive, and therefore a false impression of them is often formed. They are attached to their husband, but are coquettish and love to flirt, hence — disagreements in the family. They have good children.

Income from agriculture, from real estate is possible. Responsible work is suited to them, where a maximum of trust is required (personal secretaries, work with secret documents).

They are inclined to diseases of the lungs and skin, often suffer from respiratory
illnesses, breast cancer is possible.

Ketu in Pushya

The 1st quarter, 3°20’ — 6°40’ of Cancer

The 2nd quarter, 6°40’- 10° of Cancer
The owner of the horoscope will scatter their parents' property to the winds, since they will fall under the influence of bad company. Two marriages are possible.

They are always in debt, often move from place to place, nevertheless they manage to accumulate wealth in a distant country or city and to live comfortably for about 10 years, after which they return to their former position. But if Jupiter is in Capricorn, then the owner of the horoscope will not lose their fortune.

This is the eighth nakshatra Pushya, and it is located entirely in the constellation of Cancer. This is a very significant star. Pushya means — «she who nourishes» or «provides food». And the symbol of this constellation is the udder of a cow. The sign itself, Cancer, is ruled by the moon, as you surely remember, and by its nature this sign represents the maternal ability or the essence of the maternal nature to nourish with milk and to give energy, to give food to its children. According to many Vedic scholars, Pushya is a divine star, a star of divine nature, which is considered the most favourable of all the nakshatras for the attainment of spiritual maturity.

The ruling deity of this star is the wise Brihaspati. Brihaspati was the preceptor of the demigods, of the divine beings. Shukracharya or Venus was, let us say, his opponent. Being also a priest, nevertheless he agreed to instruct and to help demonic beings in achieving the fulfilment of their desires. According to the ancient Vedic texts, lord Shiva turned Brihaspati into the planet Jupiter. And it is precisely, perhaps, for this reason that Jupiter is exalted precisely in this star. The sign of exaltation of Jupiter is the sign of Cancer, but if at the same time Jupiter turns out to be precisely in Pushya, then its strength is especially great. And such an influence of Pushya on the nature of Jupiter is expressed in the fact that a person develops intuitive wisdom, an ability to reflect deeply and intuitively, good fortune; the person is fortunate.

A very powerful speech, which is able to influence people's minds; the person can with the help of their speech, with the help of words persuade people, and the purification of the spiritual nature — these are the qualities connected with this planet. This might and ability is also represented by this star, the might and ability to create spiritual energy, or to produce it. It is not quite correct to say that spiritual energy needs to be created, because it is indestructible, but to produce it, to activate it, to set it in motion.

And in Sanskrit such an ability, such a kind of energy is called Brahma Shakti. That is, Pushya possesses the potential, as do those who were born under this star, the potential to agitate, to set in motion the spiritual nature of every living being. The ruling planet of this constellation is Saturn, which brings stability, and gives a certain degree of creative abilities and an ability to unfold or to realise one's nature, to bring forth fruits of a completely new form.A quite deep calm, faith in oneself and in the fullness of life may also be born or manifest in a person's nature, just as it manifests in the nature of this star because of the combination of the energy of Saturn, which rules this star, and Jupiter, for which this star is the most favourable place in the whole horoscope, in the whole sky.

Pushya increases its positive efforts and good destiny through hard labour and discipline. This too is a distinctive feature of the influence of Saturn, since Saturn is connected with wisdom acquired as a result of serious efforts, great failures and an ability to set about again the matter which the person has begun. Even after failures to take up the matter again.

Pushya belongs to the category of light nakshatras; this group of nakshatras is ideally suited for beginning a business or opening a new office. Also among the symbols of this star are the flower, the circle and the arrow. The flower represents this very act of flowering — the unfolding of an unexpected new nature: something begins to blossom, and we see that a green bud, quite unremarkable in form, turns into a beautiful flower of unexpectedly bright colour or even multicoloured. And according to the author, the astrologer Behari, the flower represents that limited or, rather to say, delineated definite destiny which the person is to unfold or to live through.

And at the same time, the flower represents an astonishing harmonious symmetry, in which there must be a certain balance, that is, all the petals of the flower are very harmoniously arranged, they all have the same size, they are very symmetrical. And this too symbolises a person's need to attain symmetry, harmony in their life. In its turn, the circle reflects the possibility of attaining wholeness; the circle unites something within itself, makes something whole, unites something as a whole out of the general. And in its turn, the arrow represents an attempt to attain one's goal with the help of one's efforts and purposefulness. Under the influence of this star all spiritual warriors begin their triumphal march and set their spiritual forces in motion. Its animal symbol is the sheep or, more correctly to say, the wild mountain ram.

Pushya gives a person whose moon is in this star the possibility of acquiring learning, that is, of becoming a knowing person. It gives them the possibility of having a very calm, balanced mind, it makes people virtuosos in one sphere or another of life, activity, creativity. Usually this person disposes everyone around them positively towards themselves, is often rich, and has certain political interests. And their life noticeably improves; a noticeable rise begins after 33 years. Often, notwithstanding that these people are quite strongly attached to the family in which they grew up, it is precisely in their family, among their close ones, their relatives, that they have the most problems, at least problems of an emotional character. Quite vivid or perhaps even stormy relations may develop with the mother.

The careers of people born under the star Pushya are most often, if the person plays, as they say, according to their heart, most often connected either with government posts or activity in state services, with politics. Not infrequently they are connected with geology, and also oceanology. Besides, these people feel very adequately and comfortably in military structures and in the militia and police. And, of course, since I myself have quite rich experience of associating with these people, with people of this type, I can confirm precisely that they are most often talented in the sphere of the arts, they are quite musical, at least they play at least some one musical instrument.

As for men born under the star Pushya, they most often seize upon several things at once. That is, they have such a tendency to take on quite a lot of obligations, without having particularly managed to think whether they will be able to finish this work at all or not, not to mention finishing it on time. And, ultimately, this leads to great failures; the person does not manage to finish practically a single one of the works they have begun. Therefore such a humble request to men, possessors of the moon in this star, that they should be very careful, very cautious, very thoughtful and should know that this is simply my nature, that there is no flaw whatever in this.

And only when they have chosen a direction, only in this case is it best for them to begin performing the work. It is interesting that if this is done, if such a preliminary analysis is done, and the Pushya man has not allowed his mind to scatter over several occupations at once and to run off to all eight points of the compass, then in this sense all this energy, if one manages to direct it onto one matter — it leads to astonishing results, to absolutely astonishing results.

One of the very good qualities of the nature of these people is that they are not very sensitive to defeat, and even if they suffer serious defeats and encounter very serious obstacles, they find the possibility of overcoming these obstacles.

Even if these people have no basic education of any kind, they can show very vivid manifestations of their intellect and knowledge in practically any sphere of questions, in any subject. One more positive point of the influence of the star Pushya is that they are able to resist, as they say, with hands and feet, any idea or any project which does not come within the framework of their understanding of justice, of the principles of justice and legality. That is, such inner honesty, an inner inclination to follow laws and certain principles.

As regards the family, it is said that problems may arise in their own family, and because for a long time Pushya men turn out to be extremely dependent on their parents, and moreover this does not always happen by their own will, then as a certain decompression, simply like the release of a long-compressed spring, there appears in them an enormous urge for independence, and this height, let us say, this position they try to defend by all means when they enter into marriage. Well, it must be stipulated at once that this is characteristic of practically all men. But, evidently, the astrologers note this here not without reason; they say that after excessive pressure from parents and after excessive economic, housing, emotional and even spiritual dependence, ultimately these people declare a little revolution and become independent, and moreover, perhaps, even as it were swinging to the other extreme.

Therefore men of this type often expect that their wives will be extremely independent and reliable. And it is very important, dear girls and women, if you have young men, men who are courting you and who were born under this star, urgently enrol on vocal courses or learn to dance, or learn to play a musical instrument.  In this way it will be very easy for you to win the heart of a Pushya. And if you also become such a splendid amazon and enrol in an archery club, because archery is very closely connected with the energy of precisely this star, then in this case the Pushya man will simply be smitten by you.

Sacred Energy Vortex: Vilankulam Sri Akshayapureeswarar

The energy vortex that resonates with Pushya star is located in Thanjavur near Peravoorani in Tamil Nadu, India. People born und the star of Pushya should visit and worship the sacred temple of Sri Vilankulam Sri Akshayapureeswarar at least once during their lifetime.

Pushya is the star of Lord Sri Saneeswarar. According to the Siddhas, the inner meaning of Pushya is «to gain the affection through the glorious feet of God.» Sri Saneeswarar incurred a foot injury as Yama, the God of Death, kicked Sri Saneeswarar, leaving him with a disabled foot. To remedy his ailment, Sri Saneeswarar began begging for grains, which he then cooked and fed to the poor. He also made offerings and prayers to Lord Shiva at the sacred shrine of Vilankulam. Sri Saneeswarar received the grace of Shiva at this temple and his foot was healed. Those born under Pushya will gain the affection of Lord Sri Saneeswarar at this temple. This is where Lord Shiva revealed himself as Lord Akshayapureeswarar. He was present for Sri Sanesswarar and he is always present at this temple. People born under Pushya have abundant luck and if they offer prayers at this shrine, they will easily attain the benefits of penance.

Sri Saneeswarar can provide longevity and remove worries so that people may live in happiness. It is especially beneficial for people in the major or minor period of Saturn (Shani) to make an offering to Sri Saneeswarar to remove the evil effects committed during their previous lifetimes. Foreigners born under Pushya star should visit this temple once a year and circumambulate the temple, from left to right, eight times. This will eliminate problems with the planet Saturn.

It is recommended to anoint Lord Sri Saneeswarar with sandal paste and offer sesame sweets. Giving the sweet food to poor people at the temple is another remedy for any afflictions of Saturn. Unexpected health problems, chronic ailments and, large debt problems due to health treatment can be eliminated by making offerings at the Vilankulam Lord Sri Saneeswarar Temple.
