Purva Ashadha Nakshatra

Date 26 Dec 2022

20. Purva Ashadha (13°20′ — 26°40′ of Sagittarius)

Varahamihira: The Moon in Purva Ashadha gives a pleasant spouse, a proud character and a strong attachment to friends.

General indications: The symbol of Purva Ashadha is a fan or a winnowing basket (used to separate the grain from the chaff). Its ruling deity is Apas, the deified waters. Since another name of this nakshatra is Aparajita, «the Unconquered», it also brings victories in battles and confrontations. Purva Ashadha gives patience and persistence, allows one to wait out obstacles and unfavourable circumstances, to lie low until the mill starts turning and brings relief from unbearable heat. Fanning is in fact a challenge to the heat, just as the winnowing of grain is an aggression against the grain. Perhaps this is the reason why Purva Ashadha has to do with the declaration of war and other aggressive actions. Since the fan and the winnowing basket are instruments of civilisation that improve daily life, Purva Ashadha often promotes a strong desire to improve the everyday conditions of one’s life. If the grahas activating this nakshatra are badly placed, this improvement is often directed towards the indulgence of one’s base predilections.

Purva Ashadha unambiguously hints at invincibility and, if the lagna or the Moon is located in it, signifies one whose arguments it is impossible not to accept, but whose education has no relation whatsoever to the subject of the dispute and may in general be unfinished. Apas, or the waters, are all-pervading and universal, and these two qualities suit Purva Ashadha exactly; it loves river and sea cruises, provokes sexual excesses and causes diseases connected with fluid, such as urinary retention, deformation of the kidney or abnormal functioning of the bladder.

Physiology and diseases: The hips; the back.

Professions, people and places of habitation: All professions, people and places connected with water in all its guises: the carriage of cargo by sea, seafaring, the navy, dwellers of the sea, dams and so on. People who make finished products from semi-finished goods: manufacturers and refiners.

Purva Ashadha (Sanskrit: पूर्वाषाढ़ा) is represented by two bright stars placed on one line in the middle part of the constellation Sagittarius.

The key concept

A distinctive feature of Purva Ashadha is its conviction that it cannot lose. Purva Ashadha feels that it will succeed in everything to which it directs its energy, because it possesses such a trait as steadfastness in attaining a goal. It is able to bide its time in difficult periods and is aggressive when a chance to manifest appears. In a certain sense this is a shy and sensitive nakshatra, which knows how to conceal enthusiasm, assertiveness, energy and talents from the surrounding world as far as is at all possible. Only after a certain period, in the course of which its innate secretiveness is overcome, does it show its true self.

Most such qualities as ambitiousness, a love of adventure, enthusiasm, a fascination with philosophical ideas and a passion for travel take their origin from the nature and manner of action of Purva Ashadha. This is one of the most optimistic nakshatras, and in its optimism there is not a shade of impatience. It is always ready to wait for a favourable occasion, when the wind blows in its direction. Purva Ashadha is not at all frightened off by obstacles and does not brood over failures. Sometimes this may be regarded as a negative quality, in the sense that it rarely learns from its mistakes. The simple-heartedness of Purva Ashadha, which acts without thinking about the consequences and results, makes it dangerous. This is an explosive nature, which finds it difficult to control itself once it has flared up. And it cannot be stopped, even if it has understood the futility of its efforts.

It can often be seen that people who are under the strong influence of Purva Ashadha have unrealistic hopes, ambitions and goals. Purva Ashadha is rather straightforward and does not always take into account the feelings and aspirations of the people around it. This makes the nakshatra insensitive and even cruel in some situations. That is precisely why Purva Ashadha is often associated with war and other similar actions that bring destruction, grief and regret.

In their best manifestation Purva Ashadha natives are a driving force of society and an inspiration to those around them. They often possess a fresh, unique view of things; in their presence you begin to understand that life, after all, is not so bad.

Purva Ashadha is a nakshatra that is associated with the joy of being. Purva Ashadha people like to live every moment of time «to the full», without caring about the past or the future. They want to live well and try to improve their life circumstances. Often this is their main concern.

Purva Ashadha personalities are the sort of people who love to display their achievements. To many this looks like posturing and boasting, but in most cases Purva Ashadha people are simply following a desire natural to them to make an impression.

Purva Ashadha people look at the world from an aesthetic point of view. As a rule they have a proud and serious facial expression, but they are always ready to smile or laugh. Their behaviour may change in a second. It is not always possible to determine from their outward appearance what they are thinking or feeling. As a rule these people are honest, however they like not to reveal themselves fully. There is a vividness in them that may be expressed in their clothing, manner of communication or work.

Purva Ashadha people often do not receive a formal education, leaving school or university before obtaining a degree.

A tendency to choose simpler and easier conditions of life is inherent in Purva Ashadha. It likes to maintain its position in the upper strata of society and to lead a luxurious way of life while applying a minimum of effort to it.

Usually by their nature they are devoted and wise. They can attain fame, are magnetic and are able to influence the masses. They have good intuition and a philosophical nature, which gives victories, but aggression may also arise. They are independent, may display arrogance and selfishness, and find it difficult to submit to anyone whatsoever.

Men

Tall stature, a slender body, light eyes and beautiful teeth — that is how Purva Ashadha men look outwardly. Distinctive features are long ears, a narrow waist and long arms. On the whole, they have an attractive appearance.

Despite a strong intellect, they are inclined to draw hasty conclusions. They are inveterate debaters. They are stubborn and admit that they are wrong only with difficulty. They can give sound advice, but themselves do not listen to advice and take decisions with difficulty even in insignificant matters.

Such qualities as boldness and decisiveness manifest in Purva Ashadha men mainly only in extreme situations. They are able to do much good for other people without expecting anything in return, regardless of criticism. Very often they themselves receive help from complete strangers.

Men born under the nakshatra Purva Ashadha are usually God-fearing and humble, honest and unhypocritical. They are interested in questions of religion and respect spiritual people. They make good doctors, they have a fair understanding of art, and occult knowledge and philosophy attract them. As for success in business, it is largely connected with a good team; alone there may be a loss. The period until the age of 32 is a time of trial and error. Then, from 32 to 50, the most fortunate stage of life comes. It is possible that he will spend the greater part of his life abroad.

Difficult relations with the parents, but they receive support from brothers and sisters. Marriage may be called prosperous; it may be late and follow a victory over a rival. Conflicts in the family are quite likely. The children are usually talented and may bring fame to their parents.

Weak health because of a negligent attitude towards it. Bronchitis, tuberculosis, heart attack, and chronic and incurable diseases are possible.

Women

An extremely attractive appearance, especially the face — fair skin, an elongated nose, almond-shaped eyes and an attracting gaze.

They are very intelligent, cheerful and full of enthusiasm. They are steady in their attachments. They take an interest in everything and know how to turn defeat into success. Before taking a decision they carefully weigh all the pros and cons. They say what they think, are decisive and truthful, and are not troubled by the opinion of those around them. They love animals. They are usually well educated. They may be teachers, bank employees, religious figures, and in some cases writers or publishers.

On the whole a prosperous family life, which only improves with time, but there may be problems with the children. In marriage they take the leading position. They are good housewives.

Fairly robust health, although inflammations of the reproductive system and problems connected with the hips are possible.

The padas (quarters)

The 1st pada of the nakshatra (13°20′ — 16°40′ of Sagittarius) falls into the navamsha of Leo, ruled by the Sun. This pada relates to the proud and confident part of Purva Ashadha. The pull towards spirituality is strong here and coexists with firm ethical principles. In women softness, modesty and femininity manifest in the character.

The 2nd pada of the nakshatra Purva Ashadha (16°40′ — 20°00′ of Sagittarius) falls into the navamsha of Virgo, ruled by Venus. This pada relates to the intellectual aspect of the nakshatra. Much hard work is required here, but there is also the promise of great spiritual and material achievements. The person has excellent personal qualities. Planets placed in this pada help the person in his career in one way or another.

The 3rd pada of the nakshatra Purva Ashadha (20°00′ — 23°20′ of Sagittarius) falls into the navamsha of Libra, ruled by Venus. This pada relates to the frivolous, luxury-loving Venusian side of the nakshatra. Here the emphasis is on reaping the fruits rather than on work. Planets placed in this pada give good results and promote all kinds of partnership relations and activity involving joint, group efforts. A good upbringing, a sense of self-worth.

The 4th pada of the nakshatra Purva Ashadha (23°20′ — 26°40′ of Sagittarius) falls into the navamsha of Scorpio, ruled by Mars. This pada relates to the arrogant, withdrawn, secretive and mystical aspect of the nakshatra. Two extremes converge here — deep wisdom and too great a dependence on material values. Planets placed here are good for acquiring occult knowledge and for matters connected with foreign countries.

The ruling planet

Venus is the chief ruler of Purva Ashadha. Purva Ashadha is the strength and purity of a direct, childishly innocent mind, which is expressed through Jupiter in the form of faith and curiosity. This is the force of new life, which never grows old. That is precisely why Mercury, personifying eternal youth, is inseparably connected with this nakshatra on the esoteric level. Every time Venus revives life out of non-existence, Mercury stands behind her. The combination of Mercury, Venus and Jupiter is the alchemist’s secret. Alchemy takes its origin precisely in this nakshatra, before reaching its completion in Revati. Purva Ashadha is the founder of mysterious occult schools; Jupiter in this situation is the student of Venus and Mercury. Everyone who wants to enter this school must receive a blessing from Venus and Purva Ashadha. Thus Mercury must be on good terms with Venus in the horoscope in order for its owner to be able to attain any significant results in the occult sciences.

The conjunctions Jupiter-Venus, Mercury-Venus, Jupiter-Mercury-Venus, and also an exchange of Mercury and Venus or of Jupiter and Venus, carry an energy similar to the energy of Purva Ashadha.

With the exception of Saturn, as a rule all the planets feel good in this nakshatra. If Saturn is not afflicted, it will have a good influence in the second and third padas.
