The Moon in the 1st house
The results given by the Moon in the first house of the horoscope
Chandra (the Moon) in the 1st house
The Moon in the 1st house. Beauty, popularity, sensitivity, softness, much travel, many changes, an inclination towards the spiritual life, a happy family life. (Indubala)
The Moon in the first house:
a) the person lacks independence of judgement, inner vacillations, extreme subjectivity, an easy disposition, a pleasant personality, an attractive appearance;
b) at a new moon in the Lagna (when neither the Sun nor the Moon rules the sign of the Ascendant) the health suffers;
c) a waxing Moon gives a good build. (Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)
The Moon in the 1st house. These are very gentle people. They are pleasant to see. The Moon in the first house hinders material development. The first house is the brain. A very fast Moon is not suited to the first house. The working of the brain happens very fast. Such people are far-sighted. They prepare in advance for the bad and take unnecessary precautions. They are very afraid of encountering troubles. They think, what shall I do if it is like this? What shall I do if it is not like this? … and so on.. such caution constantly hinders them in their affairs. If one is to achieve success in the material world, one must be able to take instant decisions and to take risks. If the Moon is in the 1st house, it is difficult for the person to take instant decisions. On the other hand, they do not like anything. When it is hot, they complain, and when it is cold, they complain too. They do not like to encounter troubles, and at the same time they do not want to spend their time monotonously and calmly.
They are very changeable. Their mood changes quickly. They cannot do anything for long at one tempo. For some reason all this changes and stops. They themselves are also very mobile. They want to be near water. The speed of action decreases if the Moon is conjunct with a slow planet. The laziest planet is Saturn. If the Moon is in conjunction with Saturn, these vacillations may not occur. If the Moon is not waxing and is in conjunction with or under the aspect of malefics, the good, fine qualities disappear. A waning Moon in its dasha period causes melancholy, sadness and poor health. It is very good to have a waxing Moon here. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)
“Bhrigu Sutra” 2.1-8
A person will possess an unstable mind but a beautiful appearance if the Moon is in the 1st house of his horoscope. Frequent illnesses of the body will bring him suffering, and he will find relief in places where there is some body of water. At 15 he will make many journeys. If the Moon is placed in Aries, Taurus or Cancer, the owner of the horoscope will be versed in the shastras. A person who has the Moon placed in the 1st house will become wealthy and happy and will be under the patronage of the king, while he himself will be devoid of reason. He will be physically strong and have delicate skin. If the Moon is aspected by a benefic planet, the owner of the horoscope will be strong, reasonable, healthy, wealthy and eloquent. When the lord of the lagna is weak, poor health is to be expected, but if there is a good aspect at the same time — the health will be good.
Comments:
The Moon symbolises beauty, therefore its presence in the lagna will give particular attractiveness to the owner of the horoscope and will endow him with magnetism, charm and mysticism. The 1st house shows the basic traits of a person’s character. The personality as it were “absorbs” the nature of the planets located in the lagna. Therefore the owner of the horoscope will have a soft, romantic character. His mind will be spiritualised, but restless and unstable, since the Moon, the manas karaka and indicator of the mind, has a changeable nature. The Moon is a watery planet, therefore the owner of the horoscope will like places where the water element is manifest. Being placed in the lagna in Aries, Taurus or Cancer, the Moon will be the lady of the 4th, 3rd and 1st houses respectively. Besides this, the placement of the Moon in the 1st house will be favourable in the signs of Scorpio, Libra and Pisces as the lady of the 9th, 10th and 5th houses respectively, and will bring luck, success and renown to the owner of the horoscope or to his children. With a favourable placement of the Moon or with the influence of good aspects upon it, the owner of the horoscope will undoubtedly be endowed with some talent, inquisitiveness and breadth of interests, but will become unstable in his pursuits because of an inability to concentrate on one thing. Very good results are to be expected with Jupiter placed in the 7th house, since in that case gaja kesari yoga is formed, which speaks of the nobility and magnanimity of the owner of the horoscope, of his fame and authority. Vedic astrology considers that by virtue of its changeable nature the Moon may be a benefic or a malefic planet in the horoscope and, consequently, may bring out the positive or the negative
characteristics of the house. For example, the Moon in the 1st house in one horoscope may speak of a happy marriage, popularity, and a caring and loving character, while in another — on the contrary, of problems in marital relations and of the wilfulness and capriciousness of the owner of the horoscope. The Moon becomes favourable when
it is full or waxing and, besides that, the good influence of the Moon depends on how strong the lord of the sign in which it is placed is.
Other opinions concerning the Moon (Chandra) in the 1st house:
“Brihat Jataka” — apart from the placement of the Moon in Aries, Taurus or Cancer, this position of the Moon gives taciturnity, stupidity, baseness, dishonesty and servility. Diseases of the eyes and ears may manifest in the owner of the horoscope. In its own sign or its sign of exaltation the Moon in the 1st house will bring wealth, and being in Aries — many children.
“Phaladipika” — a person born in the bright half of the lunar month (shukla paksha — the waxing Moon) will be endowed with a strong build, fearlessness, wealth and a long life. The opposite results will be observed when the Moon is in the dark half of the lunar month, or krishna paksha.
“Saravali” — the Moon in Aries, Taurus, Cancer or a full Moon in the lagna will manifest in generosity, magnanimity, good qualities of character and prosperity. A waning Moon in the 1st house makes the owner of the horoscope miserly, stingy and restless. Such a position of the Moon is often present in the horoscopes of deaf-mute people.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — if the Moon is in Aries, Taurus or Cancer, wealth and a comfortable life are to be expected. The presence of the Moon in the other signs in the 1st house speaks of the poverty, weakness, deafness and stupidity of the owner of the horoscope.
Note: All the authoritative sources note favourable results with the Moon placed in Aries, Taurus and Cancer in the 1st house. We take the liberty of expressing disagreement with the “Chamatkar Chintamani” regarding the negative characteristics of the placement of the Moon in Pisces, Scorpio and Libra, since in that case the Moon will be
the lady of the 5th, 9th and 10th houses respectively and will bring very favourable results. In interpreting the placement of the Moon one must take into account its character: benefic in the case of shukla paksha and ruinous in the case of krishna paksha.

«Jataka Bharanam» 17:13
THE RESULTS OF THE PLACEMENT OF CHANDRA [THE MOON] IN THE LAGNA:
If Chandra is placed in the Lagna in the Rashi Karka [Cancer], Vrishabha [Taurus] or Mesha [Aries], then the person will be generous, handsome and wealthy, will obtain all kinds of sensual pleasures and will become outstanding among virtuous people. If Chandra is placed (in the Lagna) in the other Rashis [signs], then the person will be insufficiently restrained, will commit ignoble deeds, will be deaf, mute and crippled (an invalid). In the case of a waning <dark> Chandra there will be exceptionally unfavourable (ruinous) results.
Comments: The Rashi [sign] in which Chandra [the Moon] is placed is called the person’s ‘Chandra Lagna’. A Graha [planet] situated in the Lagna, whatever it may be, exerts a great influence on the person’s qualities and character. And if Chandra [the Moon] is placed in the Lagna, then the person will certainly obtain the results <of this graha in the Lagna>, since Chandra, placed in the Rashi of the Lagna, makes this Rashi two Lagnas (that is, the Rashi becomes a Lagna twice). Most ancient authors on Vedic astrology consider that Chandra in the Rashi Vrishabha [Taurus], Karka [Cancer] or Mesha [Aries] in the Lagna will give wealth, happiness, reason, beauty, luck and good qualities. The treatise ‘Bhrigu Sutra’ says that if Chandra is in the Lagna, then the person will have illness and danger from water. Besides this, it also indicates that when the person is 15 years old, he will probably have to undertake many trips.
Chandra is a Jala Graha, a Planet of Water. Therefore, being in a Rashi of a fiery nature, it is exceptionally benefic, since the union of the primary elements of Fire and Water will give steam, which symbolises Energy; thanks to this the person will have much energy, readiness, determination to act, diligence (industriousness) and an irresistible desire to obtain leadership and to achieve success. As a consequence of these virtues <qualities> there will be no aim which he could not achieve.
