In the 3rd house Mars gives good results. The 3rd house shows our passions, ambitions and the strength of our intention. Mars is the most ambitious planet, and it desires only to win. Mars in the 3rd house makes the person a specialist in a certain field. They know how to do what other people cannot do. The 3rd house is one of the upachaya sthanas or “houses of growth” (the 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th); these houses give the person success in the material world. Mars too is very egoistic, and therefore Mars feels excellent in these houses.
Every relative is connected with some house. A younger brother or sister is connected with the 3rd house. Mars leaves a scar where it is located. Mars also destroys the corresponding relative with respect to the house where it is located. The 3rd house shows younger brothers or sisters. Therefore, if Mars is in the 3rd house, misfortunes may happen to his younger brother or sister. Such a brother may die early, be seriously ill or have some inferior life. In general such people rarely have younger brothers or sisters. Usually Mars in the 3rd house makes the person himself the youngest in the family. That is, he has no younger brothers. If he has, they develop problems. Mars in the 3rd house makes the person the chief in the family. How is he to be the chief if there is some brother who enjoys greater success? Usually not very good relations form between such brothers. Many ancient authors wrote that such a placement brings death to the younger brother. Mars (Mangala) in the 3rd house
Mars in the 3rd house: Bravery, valour, accidents on trips, the loss of brothers or sisters, an ability to work hard for money, the ownership of real estate. Mars in the 3rd house: much courage and confidence in his own powers, he defeats all enemies, and every undertaking is concluded successfully. Inquisitive, resourceful, alert, a lover of arguments, possesses diplomatic abilities. With an afflicted Mars road accidents occur, injuries to the ears and hands, conflicts with brothers arise, the throat is troublesome, tonsillitis; the person criticises others too much. “Bhrigu Sutra” 3.16-25
A person in whose horoscope Mars is placed in the 3rd house will have no younger brothers or sisters. His wife will acquire a dubious reputation. This will not happen if Mars is aspected by a benefic planet. The owner of the horoscope will have a good financial position. If Mars is conjunct with Rahu or Ketu, the owner of the horoscope will enter into liaisons with prostitutes. He will have hostile relations with his brothers. The wife of the owner of the horoscope will have well-formed sexual organs. If Mars is in an unfavourable conjunction or is aspected by a ruinous planet, the loss of brothers or sisters is possible. In the case where Mars is placed in its own sign, and also in its sign of exaltation, the brothers of the owner of the horoscope will live long, and he himself will be patient and brave and will be able to show valour and heroism on the field of battle. The same favourable characteristics, only to a lesser degree, will manifest when Mars occupies a friendly sign.
Comments:
According to the theory of “Karaka bhava nashaya”, a karaka planet, being placed in its own house, gives a manifestation of negative characteristics with respect to the function of the karaka. Mars, as the bhratri karaka, the indicator of brothers, being in the 3rd house, especially without the influence of a benefic planet (such as Jupiter or Venus), may cause the loss of brothers or sisters. Since Mars is a warlike planet, relations with close relatives may also be hostile. The 3rd house is the house of short journeys, and the presence in it of Mars indicates danger while travelling. But, as the great sage emphasises, with a fortunate placement in a sign or with a favourable aspect the negative influence of Mars on the 3rd house will be destroyed. The 3rd house is a house of profit, an upachaya house, and Mars, besides that, is the indicator of property, therefore such a position of Mars in the horoscope gives its owner a good material position and an ability to work hard for profit.
Valour and heroism — these characteristics of the 3rd house manifest in full measure when Mars is present in it. Besides this, this is one of the important factors indicating that the owner of the horoscope in his past life took part in battles and combats. But in order to speak of this with confidence, confirmation from other aspects in the horoscope is necessary. As for Bhrigu Muni’s assertion about the “dubious reputation of the wife of the owner of the horoscope”, neither the 3rd house nor Mars has any relation to marriage. Most likely this statement will be true with a conjunction of Mars with the lord of the 7th house or with the kalatra karaka Venus, the indicator of the wife.
The horoscope of the Empress Catherine the Second, in which Mars is placed in its own sign in the 3rd house, serves as a good example of boldness, courage and wealth.
Other opinions concerning Mars in the 3rd house:
“Brihat Jataka” — a developed intellect and courage.
“Phaladipika” — the owner of the horoscope will be endowed with good qualities, wealthy and happy, and no one will be able to defeat him, but he will experience difficulties in relations with his brothers or will outlive them.
“Saravali” — a person who has Mars in the 3rd house of the horoscope will be wealthy and famous, brave and bold, endowed with good qualities. He will have no brothers.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — there will be no happiness because of brothers and relatives. Bravery, boldness, wealth.
Note: All the assertions of the authors are based on two theories:
1 — a ruinous planet, falling into an upachaya house, gives favourable results in exact accordance with the characteristics of the house;
2 — this is the theory of “Karaka bhava nashaya”, according to which Mars, as the indicator of brothers, the bhratru karaka, and the significator of the 3rd house, being placed in its own house, gives negative results with regard to brothers.
But Bhrigu Muni emphasises that exceptions to the last rule are possible (and this is confirmed by practical experience), when Mars is placed in its own signs, in its sign of exaltation, or experiences a benefic influence.

THE RESULTS OF THE PLACEMENT OF MANGALA IN THE 3RD BHAVA
In the case of the placement of Mangala in the 3rd Bhava the person is happy thanks to the patronage of the king, possesses a generous heart, is valorous and very wealthy, but obtains no happiness from a brother.
Comments: The 3rd Bhava is connected with the arms and their strength. Therefore Mangala — the Karaka [significator] of strength — placed in the 3rd Bhava, will give the person bravery and valour. It is considered that paired Grahas [planets] are opposed (antagonistic) to living beings. Therefore if Mangala in the 3rd Bhava is in a Rashi [sign] of debilitation, or if it is aspected by another malefic Graha, then the person has no younger brother. Thanks to a strong Mangala in the 3rd Bhava the person, as a rule, enjoys good physical health and is free from illnesses. This is natural, because strong and energetic people attain good health.
