The Sun in the 3rd house

For the Sun in the third house this is a good, strong placement, indicating a person born into a good family. These are inventive, energetic people, with skilful hands, expressive. They are good storytellers or writers, treat others well, possess good health and have a good reputation. These people show boldness and conviction. (Tom Hopke)

Surya (the Sun) in the third house

For the Sun this is a good, strong placement, indicating a person with robust health, born into a good family, benevolent, bold and firm in his convictions. These are creative, expressive and energetic people. As a rule they have a literary talent and a good reputation. (Indubala)

The Sun in the third house:  success after overcoming difficulties, intellectual arrogance, wealth, courage, not on good terms with relatives. (Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)

The Sun in the 3rd house makes the person courageous. A good placement for education and creative work. Such a person will be kind and healthy and will obtain renown. Such a placement of the Sun is not good for his brothers and makes the person the leader among his brothers. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)

“Bhrigu Sutra” 1.33-42

A person who has the Sun placed in the 3rd house of the horoscope will have no younger brothers, and his elder brothers will not survive. In the 4th, 5th, 8th and 12th years of life illnesses are possible. If the Sun is afflicted, the owner of the horoscope will commit cruel deeds. He will have two mothers. He will become valorous and will show boldness in war, will become famous and will attain wealth. The Sun, conjunct with a benefic planet, will bring prosperity to the brothers of the owner of the horoscope, and with a strong lord of the 3rd house a long life awaits them. A negative aspect to the Sun and a conjunction with a malefic planet threaten the owner of the horoscope with the destruction of his family. The influence of a favourable aspect on the Sun in the absence of a ruinous one will ensure the growth of the family, wealth and a happy life.

Comments:

In Vedic astrology there is a generally accepted rule according to which ruinous planets in the upachaya houses (the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses) give favourable results. But Bhrigu Muni, describing the placement of the Sun in the 3rd house, says that besides wealth and a courageous character, the owner of the horoscope will experience the early death of members of his family. This is explained by the fact that the 3rd house, being the second from the 2nd house, the house of the family, becomes the maraka sthana for the family. Besides this, the 3rd
house is the twelfth (the house of losses and deprivations), counting from the 4th house (the house of the mother). Therefore the early death of the mother and a second marriage of the father possibly await the owner of the horoscope.

A favourable influence on the Sun in the 3rd house or on the lord of the 3rd house is conducive to wealth, happiness and a long life for the owner of the horoscope. A positive aspect of the Sun is reflected in the benefic interaction of the 3rd and 9th houses (the 9th house is the house of fortune). It is precisely by the influence of the 9th house that the fame and wealth which the owner of the horoscope will obtain are explained. Besides this, the owner of the horoscope will be endowed with a highly developed intellect and mind, and will also be able to become a writer or a journalist. The Sun, being a planet of a fiery nature, will add to the characteristics of the
person courage, valour and boldness, but, being at the same time a ruinous planet, will become the cause of manifestations of cruelty.

The horoscope of Genghis Khan illustrates the placement of the Sun in the 3rd house of the horoscope. It is interesting to note that in the horoscope there is a most rare shatgraha yoga, or a combination of six planets in one sign. Two planets, the Sun and Jupiter, are in the na-
kshatra called Hasta, which is translated as “a clenched fist”. It is known that at the time of birth the child was clenching in his hand a clot of congealed blood resembling a red stone, which was regarded as a special omen.

Other opinions concerning the Sun in the 3rd house:

“Brihat Jataka” — a developed intellect, strength.

“Phaladipika” — a person who has the Sun occupying the 3rd house will be wealthy, full of strength, valour and magnanimity, but unfriendly towards his relatives.

“Saravali” — the owner of the horoscope will be valorous, strong, respected and educated. He will have an attractive appearance and will defeat his enemies.

“Chamatkar Chintamani” — brothers will bring suffering to the owner of the horoscope. He will make a pilgrimage to holy places and will gain victory over his enemies on the field of battle. The king will provide him with support.

Note: The “Bhrigu Sutra”, unlike the sources cited above, emphasises the necessity of a favourable aspect of the Sun and of the lord of the 3rd house for the manifestation of the positive characteristics.

The results of the placement of the Sun in the third house

If Surya is in the 3rd Bhava, then the person speaks sweetly, is very wealthy, possesses a means of transport and servants, obtains joy from performing virtuous deeds, is strong and healthy, and has several brothers.

Comments: If the 3rd Bhava (house) is occupied by Surya (the Sun), then this makes the person courageous (energetic, valorous). He is very quick in taking decisions and often proves right. He has a religious cast of mind, he is sattvic, performs difficult asceticism (“tapas”) and may become a hermit. He is free of malice and is charitable towards others. He is energetic in his affairs and will attain renown thanks to his virtues. He moves according to his plan, with a stable mind, persistence and resolve. He is not in the habit of changing his plans often. By all experienced astrologers of ancient times the placement of the Sun in the 3rd house is considered unfavourable for the person’s younger brother. Maharshi Parashara regarded this placement of Surya as unfavourable for the elder brother as well; he writes that if Surya occupies the 3rd Bhava, this kills [or, rather, is an “indicator” or sign of the death of — translator’s note] the elder brother.

The Sun in the 3rd house

The 3rd house is responsible for courage, purposefulness, an understanding of one’s desires, talents, energy, strength and enthusiasm.

The Sun in the 3rd house creates a synergy with most of these properties. The person becomes confident in himself, in his aims and desires. An identification of oneself with one’s efforts takes place, as a result of which the strength to act and to attain what is desired manifests.

The Sun in the 3rd house creates an argala (bolt) for the 4th, 6th and 1st houses. Consequently, difficulties will manifest in experiencing emotions and an instability of inner calm (the 4th house), it will be difficult to attain independence and critical thinking (the 6th house), and also an inability to accept oneself and one’s body and behaviour as they are (the 1st house).

A favourable the Sun in the 3rd house:

  • Confidence and unshakeability in aims, desires, aspirations and talents
  • Persistence in applying effort
  • Strong arms and athleticism
  • Leadership among equals in level of development
  • Unbending enthusiasm
  • A high volitional characteristic
  • Comfort in travel and moves
  • Care for brothers and sisters
  • The development of talents and the attainment of professionalism in applied skills
  • Ignoring of and imperviousness to the opinion of society

An unfavourable the Sun in the 3rd house:

  • Excessive pressure on oneself
  • A weak will to win
  • A lack of confidence in one’s own powers
  • Poor physical form
  • Loneliness among peers
  • An absence of clear aims and desires
  • Abandoning a matter halfway
  • Activity without enthusiasm, laziness
  • Copying the desires of other people

Health:

Strong arms. Athleticism. There may be defects of the bones and joints of the arms. Problems with the teeth. A weak Sun gives osteochondrosis and a stoop. Sometimes a tremor of the hands, carpal tunnel syndrome.

Conclusion:

Although the Sun, being placed in the northern direction (the 3rd, 4th, 5th houses) loses somewhat in strength, the heightened synergy with the meanings of the 3rd house gives it additional strength. On the whole the placement is average, if the chart does not support the placement of the Sun. If the Sun is strong, and the chart resonates with this placement, it gives a high level of determination and reliance on one’s own powers. Such people may achieve much by their will to success and victory. Not infrequently with a strong Sun in the 3rd house there are talented sportsmen, writers and musicians.
