Jupiter in the 1st house
The results given by Jupiter in the first house of the horoscope
Jupiter in the 1st house: In the natal chart there is a best place for every planet, which is called dik-bala. The first house is the very best place for Jupiter and Mercury. It is considered that Jupiter in the 1st house protects the person from other harmful combinations in the chart. Jupiter expands him in all fields. The person is very intelligent, wise, confident, generous, kind, optimistic, fortunate. He has enough of everything. He does not complain about life. In life he behaves like a real guru. Such a person always advises others and loves to bring up children. A good placement for teachers. He receives awards, respect, glory, reputation, renown. Others speak of him with respect. Jupiter in the 1st house protects the person (except for those who were born under the lagna of Leo) from accidents and gives good health and longevity. They put on excess weight after middle age.
The placement of Jupiter in one of the kendra houses (the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th), in its own sign (Sagittarius, Pisces) or in the sign of exaltation (Cancer) gives hamsa yoga. Such a yoga will bring the person a harmonious build, good health, intelligence, honour, success, fame. Parashara Muni, Kalyanavarma, Vaidyanatha, Gargamuni, Jayadeva, Mantreswara, Jageshwara and other well-known ancient authors said that Jupiter in the first house makes a person very intelligent, kind, noble, healthy, well known in society.
‘Jataka Kalanidhi’ says that Jupiter is damaged if it is with malefics or retrograde planets. If it is damaged, then the person tries to show himself as all-powerful, wants to look more spiritual than he really is, family problems arise, illnesses of the liver, the kidneys, diabetes, alcoholism, obesity. Jupiter (Guru) in the 1st house
Jupiter in the 1st house. Fortune, luck, nobility, good health, courage, a long life, an attractive appearance, happiness from children. Such people can be good teachers, philosophers, excellent parents. The treatises on jyotish speak of this placement of Jupiter as granting “the full knowledge of the three Vedas”. (Indubala)
Jupiter in the 1st house (where it obtains directional strength — dik-bala): money, material well-being, fortune, responsible children, beautiful speech, a proud bearing, acts on a grand scale. The parents live long. Jupiter in the 1st, 9th or 11th house grants prosperity. If Jupiter is in a kendra from the Lagna, the person will feel good in the middle of life. Jupiter in the 1st, 2nd, 10th or 11th house says that the person will obtain material well-being with the help of elder relatives or by working in a financial institution.(Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)
“Bhrigu Sutra” 5.1-6
If Jupiter is in its own sign in the 1st house, the master of the horoscope will become a good orator, versed in the shastras. He will possess the full knowledge of the three Vedas. A person having such a position of Jupiter in the horoscope will be happy, educated, will live a long life and will have many children. When Jupiter is in the sign of its exaltation — Cancer, all the mentioned results will be fully realised, and already in the 16th year of life the results of the maharaja yoga which Jupiter creates will come to the owner of the horoscope. If Jupiter is in the house of its enemy or in the house of an inauspicious planet, or is joined with a malefic planet, or occupies the sign of its debilitation, the owner of the horoscope will be ungrateful, full of vanity, will have a restless mind and dubious principles. He will have no children, he will renounce his close relatives or abandon them. An average length of life and a love of travel may also be noted. A person with such a position of Jupiter in the horoscope will be unhappy, wretched and hostile towards other people.
Comments:
Jupiter is the most benefic of all the planets, and the 1st house is simply the ideal position for Jupiter, since in this house it receives directional strength — dik-bala, and its life-giving rays illuminate the 5th house — the house of children and the intellect, the 7th — the house of marriage and family relations and the 9th — the house of the father, fortune, religiousness and prosperity. Thus, Jupiter in the 1st house indicates that the owner of the horoscope is blessed with the mercy of God. According to the “Jataka-desha-marga”, “when Jupiter occupies the lagna, it is endowed with immeasurable strength and one can say with confidence that the child born will be free from all misfortunes and sorrows”.
A position in a kendra is very favourable for Jupiter, and if it is in a kendra from the Moon, gajakesari yoga is formed, which is described by the “Jataka-desha-marga” in the following way: “Jupiter, placed in a kendra to the Moon, wards off all the calamities that might otherwise fall to the lot of the child, caused by other planets, and is like a lion, which alone is able to kill thousands of elephants”.
The “Jataka-parijata” speaks of the beneficial strength of Jupiter placed in the houses of the quadrant: “If Jupiter in its full strength is placed in a kendra, it alone neutralises all the arishtas, just as a sincere prayer to Lord Mahadeva destroys all the sins of a devotee. All the favourable results of Jupiter being in the 1st house will undoubtedly be realised, if Jupiter is not afflicted by negative aspects”.
If Jupiter is in Sagittarius, it is the lord of the 1st and 4th houses. In Pisces it is placed as the lord of the 1st and 10th houses, and in the sign of Cancer Jupiter is the lord of the 9th house. The placement of the lords of these houses in the lagna are very favourable combinations of planets for any horoscope. Besides, in these cases hamsa yoga (a pancha-mahapurusha yoga) arises, the result of which will be religiousness, a righteous character, education and wealth.
The unfavourable results of the placement of Jupiter in the 1st house, described by Bhrigu Muni, arise in the signs of a hostile planet (Venus and Mercury, that is, in the signs of Taurus, Libra, Gemini and Virgo), and also in the sign of its debilitation — Capricorn, or with a conjunction with Mars, the Sun, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
It is necessary to take into account that Jupiter is the significator of the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th houses, and its unafflicted position in the lagna gives wealth, good children, higher knowledge, fortune and prosperity, that is, it will reveal the characteristics of these houses in the most favourable way.
Other opinions concerning Jupiter in the 1st house:
“Brihat Jataka” — the owner of the horoscope will receive higher knowledge.
“Phaladipika” — beauty, fearlessness, nobility, righteous deeds, a long life and happiness from children.
“Saravali” — tolerance, a long life and beauty.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — a person whose Jupiter occupies the 1st house of the horoscope will make a pilgrimage to holy places and will obtain respect for the noble qualities of his character.
Note: All the characteristics of the placement of Jupiter in the 1st house are logical and very favourable, however the “Bhrigu Sutra” covers this question most fully.

The results of the placement of Jupiter (Guru) in the 1st house
In the case of the placement of Guru in the Lagna (the 1st Bhava) the person is highly educated and learned, receives fame thanks to the king (the government), is intellectual, full of gratitude, exceedingly liberal (free-thinking) and handsome.
Comments: When Guru [Jupiter] occupies the 1st Bhava [house], he obtains full directional strength <Dik-Bala>. A strong Guru in the Lagna endows the person with an excellent intellect, wisdom, strength and beauty. But he will suffer from the Kapha Dosha (water, mucus). If Guru is weak, then much fat accumulates in the body, and the person suffers from this.
Guru in the Bhava of the Lagna influences the person in such a way that it can easily be seen, because in such a person clarity (purity, equanimity of soul), nobility and dignity in gait, speech and all actions are noticeable. In mature age his belly becomes rounded, and his body becomes fat. He has a strong and tall body. In his eyes there is a certain paleness. The person is popular in the world thanks to his merits, great learning and magnanimity.
