If Mercury is afflicted, a speech defect is highly likely.
UCHCHA AND SVAKSHETRA. If Mercury is in Gemini or Virgo in the 2nd house, the benefits are increased. The person will attain a high position in the field of education. He may become an outstanding scholar, mathematician, astrologer or writer. He may have a youthful face.
NEECHA. If Mercury is in Pisces in the 2nd house, the person is poor, has a poor education, a limited imagination, problems with speech and pronunciation. Poor nourishment, diseases of the face, mouth, teeth or right eye. There may be a lack of self-confidence. Family life is unbalanced and scandalous.
Mercury gives its full effect at the age of 32. At this time there will be a rise in the educational level, an increase of wealth and other benefits connected with the 2nd house.

If Mercury is in the 2nd house, the owner of the horoscope will have many children. He will become resolute, wealthy, talkative, versed in the shastras and filled with a multitude of merits. Already in his 15th year of life he will attain great learning and will have enormous financial profits. If Mercury is conjunct with an unfavourable planet or is in its sign of weakness — Pisces — and also in the signs of ruinous planets, the owner of the horoscope will remain uneducated and will suffer from vata disorders [an imbalance of vata dosha]. When Mercury is conjunct with a benefic planet or is under its influence, the owner of the horoscope will be talented in mathematics and will become an authority in this science.
Comments:
Being the eleventh in relation to the 4th house, the house of the family, the 2nd house determines the increase of the family. The benefic influence of Mercury tells in that the owner of the horoscope will have many children or will himself come from a large family. Bhrigu Muni’s predictions about the attainment of a high education and of wealth in the 15th year of life are possible only in the case of exceptional giftedness in the person and with other indicators confirming this. In Vedic times people reached their physical and intellectual flowering very early and lived long, while in the Kali Yuga a degradation of consciousness takes place and the length of life is shortened.
Mercury in the 2nd house manifests very favourable results in the case of Taurus and Leo ascendants. For a Taurus ascendant Mercury will be in its own sign in the 2nd house, as the lord of the 2nd and 5th houses. For a Leo ascendant it will be in its sign of exaltation in the 2nd house as the lord of the 2nd and 11th houses. In these cases good earnings, happiness in children, popularity and profit from cooperation with others are to be expected. The last indication will manifest to a greater degree with the lagna in Leo.
Good results will also occur with Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants. With the lagna in Gemini Mercury, the lord of the 1st and 4th houses, being in the 2nd house, brings family happiness, a good education, the possession of real estate (possibly inherited) and family jewels.
For a Virgo ascendant Mercury becomes the lord of the 1st and 10th houses and brings success in business (possibly a family one) and wealth. In the case of Sagittarius rising Mercury, being in the 2nd house as the lord of the 7th and 10th houses, also speaks of a flourishing business and of property which comes through the marriage partner. For the lagna in Pisces, Mercury, the lord of the 4th and 7th houses, gives an inheritance, money through the spouse, family happiness and sensual pleasures. All these placements lead to the formation of strong dhana yogas.

Buddha, placed in the 2nd Bhava, endows the person with a good character, devotion to his Guru (teacher), happiness from skilful earning of money; he possesses extraordinary brilliance (charm) and achieves great progress.
Comments: Buddha [Mercury] is the significator of witty speech and of speech in general. If it is placed in the 2nd Bhava [house], then the person knows how to speak wittily, since the 2nd Bhava is connected with speech. Buddha in the 2nd Bhava is regarded by all the authors on Jyotish as very favourable. If in this Bhava it is in conjunction with a benefic Graha or is aspected by one, then the person obtains a higher education, his financial level will be very high, and his plans effective.
