The Sun in the 1st house
The results of the placement of the Sun in the 1st house of the horoscope
The Sun in the first house. The person is somewhat egoistic and proud, but kind-hearted and may become a good leader. Such people usually have a lean body, thin hair, a nice-looking face and weak eyesight. These people are attractive and possess a great attraction to self-knowledge. They perform their work skilfully, love pomp, ceremonies and rituals, travel and visit famous places, meet famous people and are themselves capable of becoming famous. They work for the sake of some good cause. These people are strongly drawn to the external world and have in themselves a materialistic, suspicious streak. They may become keen on politics. They are independent in character and come into conflict with people who try to control them. They consider themselves quite significant people; they possess energy sufficient to organise a difficult, large-scale enterprise. They like others to serve them. They love to spend their time alone. These are pleasant, reliable, trustworthy people. They make good managers and organisers. (Tom Hopke)
Surya (the Sun) in the first house
The Sun in the first house. Egoism, pride, a sense of one’s own importance, independence, energy, a love of pompous ceremonies and travel, an enthusiasm for politics, difficulties in family life. These people feel an attraction to famous people and may themselves become famous. They may become good leaders; they have excellent organisational qualities and a kind heart; they are reliable and deserving of trust. They love solitude and cannot bear it when others try to direct them, while they themselves gladly accept the service of others. They are endowed with an attraction to self-knowledge and strive to work for the sake of some good cause. (Indubala)
The Sun in the first house: a restless nature, a born leader and motivator, egocentric; those around may perceive such a person as imperious and proud. In the signs of Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius it may cause baldness. Early grey hair if the Sun is afflicted. If placed in Pisces, then the children are predominantly girls. In the signs of Aries and Cancer it gives diseases of the eyes. Poverty if at 7° or 13° of Libra;
A conjunction of the Sun with Rahu in the 1st house promises hypertension and problems with eyesight;
A connection of the Sun with the Moon makes the person inconstant.
A person with the Sun in the 1st house looks older than his years.
The influence of the Sun on the Lagna reduces the quantity of hair.
(Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)
The Sun in the 1st house is found in those who were born at sunrise — that is, at the moment when life on earth awakens.
Such people are brisk and active, and they have a constant desire to go forward. They do not mumble; they speak directly. They have no fear of enemies. They do not go back. They have an innate self-confidence. They can go towards their goal, overcoming all barriers, and at the same time they do not employ crafty, cunning measures. They become cunning and crafty only in the case where the Sun is damaged by a strong influence of malefics.
The Sun in the first house often gives poor eyesight.
If the Sun is in the sign of Aries (its sign of exaltation) in the 1st house, such a person will be very proud, stubborn and energetic, and honest; with the lagna in Aries the Sun is the ruler of the 5th house. The 5th house is the intellect; such people are very educated and intelligent. If Jupiter is also in the sign of Aries, such a person will be very noble, upright and honest. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)
“Bhrigu Sutra” 1.1-21
A person who has the Sun placed in the 1st house of the horoscope has good health and a pitta constitution, is wise and righteous, sparing of words, perceptive, and loves to travel. He will have no children. But this same placement of the Sun may give stupidity and an absence of reason. The Sun in the 1st house speaks of increased acidity of the stomach and of diseases of the eyes. With favourable aspects of the Sun the owner of the horoscope will be well educated and happy.
If the Sun is in ARIES, then the owner of the horoscope will be celebrated and famous. With the Sun placed in LIBRA weak eyesight, a dislike of knowledge and poverty are to be expected, but this will not manifest when the Sun is aspected by a favourable planet. If the Sun is in the sign of LEO in the rashi or in the navamsha, the owner of the horoscope will be endowed with power and will own land. The Sun in CANCER will bring the owner of the horoscope extensive knowledge. He will be inclined towards inflammatory diseases and feverish states. In a person having the Sun in CAPRICORN in the 1st house diseases of the heart are possible. If the Sun is in PISCES, then the owner of the horoscope is distinguished by servility before women. The Sun in VIRGO says that the person is distinguished by an inability to be grateful. He will lose his wife and will have only daughters. A person who has the Sun placed in its own sign of LEO is endowed with robust health, but in conjunction with an unfavourable planet or with bad aspects he will suffer from fever in his 3rd year of life.
Comments:
The Sun in Vedic astrology is considered a ruinous planet, while in the Western tradition it is considered favourable. The 1st house shows the basic traits of character, therefore a person in whose horoscope the Sun is in the lagna may be egoistic, proud and imperious, and his appearance majestic and regal. Despite its malefic character, the Sun is a planet of sattvic nature, and the owner of the horoscope will be wise and righteous. If the Sun is afflicted by unfavourable planets — Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu — then weak eyesight or diseases of the eyes are to be expected (the Sun and the 1st house in the medical aspect are indicators of the eyes and of eyesight), and the character of the owner of the horoscope will be irritable, haughty and imperious. Possibly it is these qualities that the great sage has in mind when he speaks
of stupidity and an absence of reason.
Very favourable results are ascribed to the Sun placed in Aries, its sign of exaltation, since in that case the Sun will be the ruler of the 5th house, which characterises a person’s intellectual abilities. An exalted Sun in the lagna indicates a genius or a most talented scholar. Besides this, the 5th house is the ninth house counting from the dharma bhava, the 9th house of the rashi, which is also called the “bhagya”, or the house of fortune and prosperity. Therefore the placement of the Sun in Aries, as also in
Sagittarius, when it is the lord of the 9th house, will bring luck, fame and renown.
The placement of the Sun in the feminine signs of the mutable cross (Pisces and Virgo) is considered unfavourable, since in that case the Sun loses its dominant qualities. When Virgo is the rising sign, then the Sun becomes the lord of the 12th house — the house of losses and deprivations. Besides this, the 12th house is the sixth house (illnesses) counting from the 7th (the marriage partner), therefore the placement of the Sun in Virgo in the 1st house is described by the “Bhrigu Sutra” as “the loss of the wife”. Being placed in a feminine sign, the Sun, as a planet giving life, will grant the owner of the horoscope more daughters. Besides this, being in the 1st house, the Sun will influence the 7th house, therefore disagreements in family life threaten the owner of the horoscope. Since the 1st house shows the general direction of life, the presence in it of the Sun, an unfavourable planet, speaks of a constant struggle in life, of periods of rises and falls, and of sufferings in the period of youth.
Other opinions concerning the Sun in the 1st house:
“Brihat Jataka” — bravery, stubbornness and cruelty will be characteristic of a person if the Sun is in the 1st house of his horoscope. He will not avoid eye diseases. If the lagna is in Aries — the owner of the horoscope will be a worthy and well-known person.
With Leo rising “night blindness” is possible, with Libra rising — poverty, with Cancer rising — inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eyes.
“Saravali” — the owner of the horoscope will be lazy, irritable, brave, proud, cruel and merciless. If the Sun is in Cancer — cataract is possible, in Aries — poor eyesight, in Leo — “night blindness”, in Libra — poverty and an absence of offspring.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — the owner of the horoscope will have a beautiful appearance. Anxieties from wife, children and family await him, and on his life path — rises and falls. He will travel often and have a changeable material position.
Note: All the treatises consider the characteristics of the placement of the Sun
in the 1st house taking into account its malefic nature, and only the “Bhrigu Sutra” also notes the influence of the Sun as a planet of sattva guna.

The results of the placement of the Sun in the Lagna (the 1st house):
If Surya [the Sun] is placed in the Lagna (that is, in the 1st Bhava), then the person will be thin-haired, will show laziness in his affairs, will be inclined to be angry, very extreme (peculiar) in character, sensual (amorous), his eyes will be diseased and his body dry; he will be courageous, unforgiving and cruel.
Comments: If in the Lagna Surya [the Sun] is in the Rashi Karka [the sign Cancer], then the person suffers from trachoma of the eyes. If it is in the Rashi Mesha [Aries], the person will be changeable (capricious, disobedient) in character. If Surya is placed in the Rashi Simha [Leo], the person will suffer from night blindness; and if it is in the Rashi Tula [Libra], the person will be poor and without offspring. Here Pandit Dhundhiraj has described the general results of Surya when it is placed in the Lagna. But there will be important differences in the results with Surya in the Lagna, since it may be in different Rashis (signs). Besides this, there will be changes in the results because of the influences of other Grahas on Surya. Besides the results mentioned above by the Pandit, there will also be other general results which the person will obtain with Surya in the Lagna. It is known that such a person often suffers from disorders of Pitta Dosha (Fire). It is difficult for him to adapt or to find mutual understanding with the other members of his family and with his surroundings, because he believes in principles and rules of behaviour, has no intention of plotting anything against anyone, because he is frank and direct in his speech. If there is any ruinous influence on Surya, then the person will always have a danger of breaking bones. The person is inclined towards sudden but not prolonged anger, and leads a free life. His originality diminishes and is lost if he works in subordination to someone. He often suffers from such illnesses as fever, chickenpox, croup (a disease of the lungs, tuberculosis), disturbance of the working of the intestines (diarrhoea or constipation) and the like. Such people, as a rule, possess righteous (moral) behaviour.
The Sun represents the body, self-identification, the ability to defend oneself, persistence, and the presence of clear principles of life.
In the natural horoscope [where Aries occupies the 1st house] the Sun is exalted in the first house. Therefore the Sun receives strength from this house. Besides this, the Sun is the natural karaka for the 1st house, since it duplicates some of its meanings — such as: the body, the ego, the external role and nature of the person. This also gives additional strength to the Sun.
A favourable Sun:
- Self-confidence, persistence in attaining the aims and ideals set
- A high level of self-awareness and understanding of one’s behaviour, character and role in society
- They are almost always in a state of comfort and security
- Born leaders, since they consider their subordinates a part of themselves and accordingly care for them
- A magnificent and strict father. An example to follow. Most often the native himself had a self-confident, purposeful father.
- They easily attain a high position in their social group.
- They love spirituality, mysticism and intuitive views. They are drawn to wise and developing people
- They endure solitude easily. It is easy for them to live for themselves and their aims.
- They orient themselves excellently in the distances of communication. This gives confidence in relationships and business ethics. They easily set boundaries and create laws.
An unfavourable Sun:
- A high bar with respect to themselves, pressure on themselves.
- It is sometimes difficult to get through to the person
- They part with the past with difficulty; changes are experienced painfully (the Sun creates an argala to the 12th house)
- Egoism spreads wider than is needed for life, therefore it is difficult to live with high ambitions and expectations of the world
- They can be tyrannical with partners in the family and in business. They love to occupy a dominant position.
- With a weak horoscope, they assert themselves at the expense of others. They humiliate rivals and accumulate compromising material on them.
- Difficulties in doing what they love. The person often sacrifices his own work for the sake of attaining his aims and ambitions.
- They can be excessively superficial and callous, by which they make enemies for themselves.
- At times they experience a hardening in their own principles and laws of life. In periods of renewal they sincerely need help from outside.
Health:
Strong bones of the skull, an anatomically healthy brain. Sometimes a dullness of the lobes of the brain is traced. Cases with increased intracranial pressure are also encountered. There may be migraines connected with changes of weather conditions. High immunity, resistance to irritants and to the aggressiveness of the external environment. Sometimes autoimmune diseases are encountered.
Conclusion:
The positive qualities of the placement of the Sun in the 1st house undoubtedly outweigh the negative. The magnanimity and self-confidence which these people radiate will leave no one indifferent. With a weak natal chart the dominant qualities of the native become somewhat more noticeable. And if such a placement of the Sun is supported by a strong horoscope, then the person will shine brightly in the sphere of leadership and care for people, and will also inspire and motivate an enormous number of followers.

The results of the various periods/sub-periods of the Sun
The Sun occupying the 1st house at the moment of a person’s birth, in its periods will manifest a tendency towards a calm or “easy” life, harsh behaviour, a weakening of eyesight or diseases of the eyes, and also towards boastfulness. The native will be impetuous and impatient. (Dr. Shanker Adawal — Dasha System)
