The conjunction Rahu + the Sun
Self-assertion or heightened selfishness, self-exaltation, arrogance, a striving for independence, a refusal to accept authority, conflict with the authorities. It gives success abroad or in connection with foreigners.
The sign of the zodiac in which this conjunction takes place gives it an additional colouring:
- In the fiery signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) Rahu + the Sun particularly strengthens the ego and makes the person a rebel and a revolutionary.
- In the earthy signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) Rahu + the Sun makes the native excessively practical, materialistic or critical.
- In the airy signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) Rahu + the Sun is a softened combination, with less selfishness.
- In the watery signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) Rahu + the Sun strengthens creativity, imagination and the emotions.
An example of a link between Rahu and the Sun:
Here, in the D1 chart, Rahu and the Sun are linked through an aspect of Rahu within a single degree. The Sun stands at 24°26′ of Pisces and Rahu at 23°48′ of Cancer. In the D9 chart Rahu is closely linked with the Sun and the Moon in the 6th house. By type the person is inclined to fight, ambitious and domineering. The dispositor of Rahu is the Moon in the Lagna. Jupiter is in the 10th in Shatabhisha (a nakshatra of Rahu).
That is, Rahu influences the 1st house and the ego through its aspect on the Sun and Mercury and through its agent, the Moon. Through the nakshatra in which Jupiter stands, linked with Mars, it influences the person's standing.

Rahu and the Sun standing in the same house (the same sign of the zodiac) points to a birth that took place either within the eclipse corridor or a little before or after it. Twice a year the Sun joins Rahu and Ketu, and when it stands within 10 degrees of them at the new or the full Moon it enters into battle with its sworn enemies, which on the outer plane shows itself in the form of lunar and solar eclipses — Chandra-grahana and Surya-grahana. Any link between Rahu and the Sun can be regarded as an eclipse, and this is why such a conjunction is called Grahana yoga.
Malefics tend above all to afflict the living indications of the planets and houses they are joined with, and so the influence of Rahu on the Sun points to trouble with the father in the native's life; with other combinations present (linked with the affliction of the 9th house of the father and of its lord) it may mean the loss of the father, or difficulties with his health, or a hard relationship with him, or some other form of separation of the native from his parent.
The indications of the house in which the conjunction of Rahu and the Sun takes place will feel upon themselves the state of war between these mighty personalities.
The link of Rahu with the Sun is considered a very difficult one for a further reason: Rahu hinders the interaction with the jiva, the immortal soul, whose symbol is the Sun, the natural atma-karaka in the horoscope. The search for oneself under a conjunction of Rahu with the Sun differs, however, from what we can observe in a conjunction of Ketu with the Sun, since here we see a striving of the personality to push back its boundaries and to become a powerful and successful person. The native may make a huge contribution within society, and in that case Rahu strengthens the qualities of the Sun. In the life of such a person there is a clear goal and an indication of success (at least in outer activity, which the Sun also symbolises): a high social position, fame and achievement.
As one of the indicators of the karmic task, Rahu in conjunction with planets shows which qualities we need to develop in this incarnation. Here that means the best qualities of the Sun: responsibility, self-confidence, the ability to help others, to be a good leader and to lead people, spiritual development and self-awareness, healing abilities. One should also pay attention to one's health and strive for a healthy way of life.
However, since Rahu behaves like Saturn («shanivat rahu — kujavat ketu»), and Shanideva is an enemy of the Sun, the negative sides of this conjunction are also strengthened: excessive ambition, selfishness and rigidity of thinking. A fear of failure is also possible, since the success and the powers the person dreams of are not always real or available to everyone. The constant widening of horizons and the inflating of ambition (through the unrestrained expansion natural to Rahu) may lead to a fiasco. In effect, a conjunction of the Sun and Rahu may say that the native himself stands in the way of his own success.
The conjunction Rahu + the Sun helps to build up connections abroad (since Rahu is the symbol of everything alien, unconventional and foreign). In other cases this conjunction points to foreigners being able to damage the native's reputation, or it may draw him into a scandal or a criminal situation.
If the native learns to control his ego, to moderate his ambition and to be content with his position, success is guaranteed to him — at least in outer affairs. The result of this conjunction depends in many ways on the position and the condition of the lord of the house (the dispositor) and on the intervention of other planets through conjunction or aspect. The influence of Rahu on the Sun is especially noticeable in the periods and sub-periods of Rahu and of the Sun, and also during transits of malefics through the sign or house where this conjunction stands.
Planets within 5° along the course of the retrograde motion of Rahu and Ketu, and also in a kendra from them (in a 1/1 or 4/10 relation), are considered captured, and the influence of Rahu and Ketu on their indications and on the indications of the houses owned by the captured planets in the natal chart grows greatly.
An example of the conjunction Rahu + the Sun in the horoscope of Donald Trump
Donald Trump was born at the moment of a lunar eclipse, and Rahu and the Sun stand in his chart in the 10th house (power, standing, career) in the earthy sign of Taurus, while in the navamsha the same conjunction is preserved in the earthy sign of Virgo. Strong ambition and success in the field of real estate (the element of earth and the influence of Mars in the Lagna); at the same time, having reached the post of President of the United States, Trump entered history as the first president with two impeachments.
The Rahu-Ketu axis shows the field in which we have a «karmic swing» — a falling into extremes — and there we therefore need to work on lessening the amplitude of the swings. The dispositor of the conjunction Rahu + the Sun is Venus in the 12th house, which points both to a preoccupation with the theme of the bedroom and to active outward expansion, and also to the loss of standing and power (the lord of the 10th in the 12th). The jiva, or the lord of the nakshatra of Rahu and of the Sun (Mrigashira), is Mars, which is a yoga-karaka and stands in the Lagna. Outward success and achievement, but a constant war with rivals…

Rahu + the Sun
Rahu destroys the ability to protect one's attachments and identifications. This strongly affects the ability to judge events soberly and to cast off negative influences. Such people easily become adepts of communities, they give way to the influence of charismatic personalities, their superiors impose their own position on them, and so on. Behind outward events the person forgets his own wholeness and safety, often ignoring outer, destructive factors.
Rahu creates the illusion of safety, which leads to 2 possible lines of development. In one case people become trusting fools, in the other — spiritual and unattached to matter. Everything depends on the remaining placements in the natal chart.
If Rahu is weaker than the Sun, the ego becomes incredibly strong and bulletproof. Such a personality is always sure of itself in everything. This is a strong position for leaders, businessmen and other people who need confidence and faith in themselves.
