Privacy policy

This policy explains what AstroJyotish.info collects, why, how long it is kept and what you can ask us to do with it. It is written for this site specifically — not copied from a shop template — so if something is not listed here, we do not do it.

The site is run by the AstroJyotish.info project. For any question about this policy or about your data, write to info@astrojyotish.info. We answer within 30 days.

The short version

  • We do not sell your data and we do not show advertising.
  • We ask for birth data only because a chart cannot be calculated without it.
  • Two analytics services and one cookie for the interface language — that is all the tracking there is.
  • You can ask us to send you a copy of your data or delete it, by email, without explaining why.

What we collect

Birth data for a chart. When you request a natal chart calculation we store the name or label you enter, the date, time and place of birth, the coordinates and time zone derived from that place, the type of event and the sex. This is the input the calculation needs; without it there is no chart. The name field is free text — you may put anything there, including a pseudonym.

Email address. If you ask for the result to be sent to you, we store the email address together with the name and the interface language, so that the finished chart can reach you and so that you can find your earlier charts.

Correspondence. Letters you send to us, and anything you write in the contact form, including the address you write from.

Technical data. Standard web-server records: IP address, the time of the request, the page requested, the browser's user-agent string, and error records when something breaks. These are kept for diagnosing failures and abuse.

Analytics. The site uses Google Analytics 4 and Yandex.Metrica. They record visits, pages viewed, approximate location by IP, device and browser, and how you arrived at the site. We use aggregate reports from them; we do not use them to identify individuals.

We do not take payments on this site, so we hold no card or bank details. We do not collect health data, and we do not ask for documents.

Why we are allowed to hold it

Where the law requires a legal basis (the GDPR and similar regimes), ours are these. Birth data and the email address are processed to perform the service you asked for — you supply them precisely so that we can calculate and deliver a chart. Server logs and abuse prevention rest on our legitimate interest in keeping the site working. Analytics and non-essential cookies rest on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by declining cookies in your browser or by using the browser add-ons the two services publish for opting out.

Birth data can be seen as sensitive by some readers, since a chart is used to reason about a person's life. We treat it that way: it is never shared with third parties, never used for advertising and never published.

Cookies

The site sets a cookie remembering your interface language, and a session cookie while you are logged into the administrative area. Neither is used for tracking. Google Analytics and Yandex.Metrica set their own cookies; blocking them in your browser does not break the site — the calculator and all the texts work with cookies disabled.

Who else sees the data

Nobody buys it, because we do not sell it. Data reaches other parties in only three ways: the hosting provider that runs the servers and their backups, acting on our instructions; the two analytics services named above, within their own privacy terms; and a lawful, properly served demand from a competent authority, which we comply with only to the extent it actually requires.

Pages on this site sometimes link out — to Patreon, to Boosty, to the project's social accounts. Once you follow such a link you are on someone else's site, under their policy, not ours.

How long we keep it

Charts and the account they belong to are kept until you ask us to delete them, so that you can come back to a chart you calculated earlier. Correspondence is kept for up to three years. Server logs are kept for up to twelve months. Analytics retention is set by the services themselves; ours is set to the shortest period each of them offers.

Your rights

Whatever country you write from, we will honour the following on request: a copy of the data we hold about you; correction of anything wrong; deletion; a machine-readable export; an objection to processing; and withdrawal of consent for analytics. Write to info@astrojyotish.info from the address you used on the site, or describe the chart precisely enough for us to find it. We do not charge for this and we do not require a reason.

If you are in the EU or the UK you may also complain to your national data protection authority. We would rather you wrote to us first, but that right is yours regardless.

Security

Traffic to the site is served over HTTPS. Access to the administrative area is limited to the project's maintainers and is password-protected. We keep backups. No site can promise perfect security, and we do not; what we can promise is that if a breach affects your data we will say so, promptly and plainly, rather than quietly.

Children

The site is not intended for children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has sent us birth data, write to us and we will delete it.

International transfers

The servers and the analytics services may be located outside your country. Where the law requires safeguards for such a transfer, we rely on the standard contractual clauses used by the providers concerned.

Changes

We review this policy at least once a year and whenever the site changes what it collects. Substantive changes are announced on this page; the date of the last revision is shown above the text.
