Shravana Nakshatra

Date 26 Dec 2022

22. Shravana (10°00′ — 23°20′ of Capricorn)

Varahamihira:
The Moon in Shravana creates a prosperous and educated personality, gives him or her a free-thinking spouse, wealth and wide renown.

General indications: The symbol of Shravana is three footprints placed in disorder, and its deity is Vishnu, the Preserver of the Universe.

Etymologically Shravana goes back to the Sanskrit verb «to hear». Both its etymology and its emblem, hinting at a connection with the goddess Saraswati — the patroness of learning and wisdom, signify deep well-readness and quickness of wit, especially in the field of orally transmitted knowledge («listening»), whose various kinds are one of the spheres subject to Shravana. By this is meant everything that issues from the mouth — from the study of languages to ordinary chatter. Muhammad Ali, whose Moon as the ruler of the ascendant (Ashlesha/Cancer) was located in Shravana, used words (Shravana) to hypnotise (Ashlesha) his opponents and the public.

The deity of Shravana is Vishnu, the Preserver, who in union with Saraswati prompts this nakshatra chiefly to govern the sacred oral traditions, which have been preserved in a more or less untouched form as the Vedas and the Vedangas. Besides, it is in charge of learning and mentorship, mainly where the knowledge of previous generations has been preserved. The lagna or the Moon in Shravana often signifies a kind, merciful and humane person. Shravana is also responsible for the gait, and also for limping or lameness, in particular if the lords of the 9th house (hips, lower back), the 10th (knees), the 11th (ankles) or the 12th (feet) are afflicted in this nakshatra. Shravana also indicates travel and sometimes creates problems with the urinary system.

Physiology and diseases: The ear; the genital organs.

Professions, people and places of habitation: Truthful and devout people. Scholars and mentors in faith. Schoolchildren, students, teachers. Keepers of sacred traditions. Universities. General educational subjects. Languages and linguists. Presenters of entertainment columns in newspapers and announcers. The sound recording industry. Concerts. Storytellers.

Shravana (Sanskrit: श्रवण) is represented by three bright stars in the constellation Aquila.

The key concept

An effective listener; obtaining support and securing success as a result of skilfully building relationships and productive interaction with other people.

Shravana prompts meditation and reflection. Its main spiritual impulse is concentration on the present moment. This nakshatra possesses strong organisational abilities; it likes to establish order by means of tact and intelligence in every way available. It gives a person the ability to listen, to assimilate and to reflect on a problem in order to find its solution. It does not favour haste and is ready to show patience and to wait for the right moment.

Shravana is devoted not only to the listener; it also has to do with speech and the ability to clothe knowledge in words, and therefore it is associated with the use and study of foreign languages, with music and with everything connected with learning and education.

On the whole Shravana is a peace-loving and friendly nakshatra, which tries to be reasonable and to live in peace with its surroundings. It is calculating, but in its highest manifestation is devoid of egoistic motivation. Shravana is persistent and stubborn and does not like to leave a matter unfinished. Perhaps that is precisely why it is considered that everything begun during this nakshatra will certainly be completed.

In its worst manifestation Shravana uses persistence, foresight and erudition exclusively for mercenary ends. The ability to listen, to perceive and to transmit knowledge degenerates into gossiping, slander and manipulation. Since this is a very purposeful nakshatra, it becomes dangerous when its goals become base and unethical. One must moderate one’s ego, since only unbiased listening gives the opportunity to learn anything. There is a danger that a person who is under the strong influence of Shravana will learn the wrong things. He needs to choose his friends very carefully: because of such qualities of his as a certain recklessness and a love of unnecessary risk, he may become a victim of deceit and bad advice.

In its best manifestation Shravana is connected with the acquisition of universal knowledge whose purpose is the establishment of order in the material world. It usually gives erudition, and also shrewdness and wisdom. The art of oratory and all kinds of teaching and lecturing come to Shravana natives easily and without effort. At the present time the organisational abilities of Shravana are often used for negative, destructive purposes. This nakshatra is closely connected with the mass media, and most of them today are used to spread unreliable, false information and negative influence.

Shravana is a socially active nakshatra, which derives pleasure from public affairs. It has a businesslike approach to things, although it displays friendly feelings and affability. A person with the ascendant in this nakshatra will most likely be mature in his judgements and inventive, and will possess good manners and a perceptive gaze. In his appearance there will be a mixture of lunar softness and Saturnian harshness. People with such a placement usually know how to conduct an intelligent conversation well and make others feel at ease in their presence. In our times many of them spend a great deal of time talking on the telephone. Whether such a person will talk or listen more depends on which planet is placed in this constellation. For example, if Saturn, the person will listen more; if Mars — he will be a chatterbox.

One of the causes of Shravana’s downfall may be excessive generosity, which may lead to debts and poverty. It is capable of making enemies because of its impatience, narrowness and fanatical ethical views. The symbol of Shravana is the ear, and therefore what these people hear influences them very strongly, and it is very important for them to choose the right circle of communication. Practicality, discipline, kindness, self-sacrifice, industriousness, a love of truth, sensitivity — these are the characteristic traits of a person in whom this nakshatra is prominent. Shravana is also called the star of study, because people with this nakshatra love to learn. But they need time for themselves, for solitude. Under negative aspects there is a tendency towards gossip — both listening to it and spreading it. Success usually comes in middle age, not in the young years.

«The Moon in Shravana creates a prosperous and educated personality, gives a free-thinking wife, wealth and wide renown. Varahamihira»

Men

They are attractive in appearance, lean and usually not tall. There may be a mark on the face — a mole or a wart. A charming smile, pleasant speech and calm behaviour.

They are always neat and clean, and can hardly tolerate people without these qualities. They love tastily cooked and neatly served food.

They believe in God and in the Sacred Scriptures, believe that good will conquer evil, help those in need and do not expect gratitude. They are devoted to their teacher. They do not take revenge even on their worst enemies. In the course of their life they more than once become victims of deceivers and thieves.

They may be good politicians, since their calmness and confidence influence people’s minds. They are good advisers and are able to do several things at once. Being vested with power, they display all their talents and command respect from those around them.

They are always short of money; they are never too rich or too poor.

Before the age of 30 several cardinal changes take place in their life. The period of life from 30 to 45 is stable in all respects if there are preconditions for this in the chart. After the age of 65 prosperity comes.

Excellent engineers, good mechanics. They cope quite well with the oil business.

They are happy in marriage and have a wonderful wife, but may enter into liaisons with other women.

Problems with the ears, skin diseases, rheumatism, tuberculosis and problems of the gastrointestinal tract are possible.

Women

Tall, slender. Large facial features; as a mark there may be a gap between the teeth.

They are religious and visit holy places. They are compassionate towards the weak and the needy and engage in charity. They love to display themselves and to live for show. They adapt easily to everything and everyone, except their own husband and everything connected with family life, and make high demands on their partner.

They dance beautifully, are supple, love shows and are interested in the fine arts. Their education is usually secondary, and therefore they often work as typists, office administrators and secretaries.

Because of an attachment to perfection and a desire to be proud of their family, conflicts with the spouse often arise.

Migraines, skin diseases, tuberculosis and diseases of the ears are possible.

The padas (quarters)

The 1st pada of the nakshatra Shravana (10°00′ — 13°20′ of Capricorn) falls into the navamsha of Aries, ruled by Mars. People born in this pada reflect the deep Martian qualities of the nakshatra, namely: logic, initiative, the importance of career aspirations and ambitiousness. There is no happiness in marriage; an inclination towards alcohol is possible.

The 2nd pada of the nakshatra Shravana (13°20′ — 16°40′ of Capricorn) falls into the navamsha of Taurus, ruled by Venus. In this pada such qualities as diplomacy, tact and politeness dominate. Among the negative manifestations, displays of passion and greed are possible. Any planet placed here gives excellent results. This pada relates to those who are involved in organisational activity in the entertainment industry, especially in the music business.

The 3rd pada of the nakshatra Shravana (16°40′ — 20°00′ of Capricorn) falls into the navamsha of Gemini, ruled by Mercury. This pada makes more noticeable that side of Shravana which is flexible and inventive, speaks well and loves to learn. It is responsible for those who work in the mass media and other professions connected with communication. Material success, but debts and an inclination towards fraud are possible.

The 4th pada of the nakshatra Shravana (20°00′ — 23°20′ of Capricorn) falls into the navamsha of Cancer, ruled by the Moon. This pada personifies that part of Shravana which is understanding, sympathetic and receptive. This pada is more oriented towards the masses than any other and, accordingly, relates most of all to those who work in important public organisations, or to those who engage in such «lunar» professions as, for example, a worker in the hotel business, the owner of a hotel. Generosity and religiousness, respect from spiritual persons. The possession of landed property is possible.

The ruling planet

The Moon is considered the main ruling planet, but one should not forget Saturn either, which rules Capricorn. The Moon is responsible for the receptivity and softness of Shravana, and Saturn — for its preserving and organisational aspect.

Both of these planets are closely connected with the popular masses and mass consciousness, and therefore Shravana possesses the ability to influence public opinion. The 10th house, which is similar in energy to Shravana, gives the position and influence for a person to be able to carry universal values to the masses. In today’s world, where the majority of the population is ignorant and poorly educated, and the leaders of the group care not only about their own interests, mainly the negative sides of this nakshatra manifest. In its highest manifestation, however, it promotes the spread of morality and universal truths by means of such fascinating and easily perceived Vedic epic tales as the «Mahabharata» and the «Ramayana».

Lunar energy reaches its peak in Shravana. In numerology the figure «2» is considered the number of the Moon. Shravana is the 22nd constellation; the double two symbolises the utmost fullness of lunar energy. This means that all the worst and best qualities are expressed through this nakshatra. Because of exceptional sensitivity, mistakes in judgement are very likely. Inconstancy, indecisiveness, fears and phobias manifest. Only highly developed souls demonstrate such positive «lunar» qualities as compassion, maternal care and complete all-acceptance.

The Moon in Capricorn, Saturn in Cancer, or the Moon and Saturn together in any sign or house carry energies similar to the energy of Shravana.

The Moon, Saturn, Mars, Mercury and Venus feel good and prosper in Shravana. Venus, however, may make a person too attached to material values, unless there are other ennobling factors.

THE TWENTY-SECOND STAR — SHRAVANA 10°-23° 20’ OF CAPRICORN

The Greek name is Aquilae. The nakshatra consists of three stars — symbolically the three steps of Vamana, an incarnation of Vishnu. Shravana is a «deva», a divine star whose name is translated as «listening». This is the star of learning, connected with the goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge,
and with the Supreme Lord Vishnu. It symbolises the obtaining of such knowledge as allows one to go beyond the limits of the material world.

They help many, but receive no gratitude. In the course of their life they are robbed more than once.

They may become good politicians, since their calmness and confidence influence people’s minds. They will never be either too
rich or too poor. They are good advisers and are able to do several things at once. They will shine if they take some high post. Since great responsibility and many duties always lie on them, they are always short of money. They do not take revenge even on their worst enemies.

The Moon in the 2nd quarter, 13° 20’ -16° 40’ of Capricorn
Passion and greed. The owner of the horoscope has people serving him. If Venus and the lagna are also placed in this quarter, a woman born in this quarter of the nakshatra and her mother are prostitutes.

A passionate character, an inclination towards fraud. Sickliness. The owner of the horoscope has money, but also many debts. In life he attains material success.

The Moon in the 4th quarter, 20° — 23° 20’ of Capricorn
Generosity and religiousness, the respect of priests and of those who worship God, the possession of landed property. The owner of the horoscope feels an interest in dancers. The age of 20 is a dangerous year. If the Moon is placed exactly in the 20th degree of Capricorn, the child will not live long.

IF THE SUN IS PLACED IN SHRAVANA AND ASPECTED BY:

• the Moon — trouble because of women;
• Mars — a high intellect, work with people;
• Mercury — the owner of the horoscope brings trouble and problems to everyone, and those around him dislike him;
• Jupiter — intelligence, kindness;
• Venus — wealth from women;
• Saturn — closeness to the ruling circles, many enemies, but the owner of the horoscope defeats them.

The Sun in the 1st quarter, 10°- 13° 20’ of Capricorn (birth on 26—29 January)
If both the Sun and the Moon are placed in this quarter (birth at the new moon) and aspected by Saturn — danger to both the father and the mother. If the person was also born at sunrise — the death of the father or of the paternal grandfather soon after this person’s birth is possible.

The Sun in the 2nd quarter, 13° 20’ -16° 40’ of Capricorn (birth on 29 January — 1 February)
One marriage and one child. If the Sun is placed between malefic planets, is involved in a papakartari yoga and the birth took place during the day — the owner of the horoscope will lose his father early.

The Sun in the 3rd quarter, 16° 40’ — 20° of Capricorn (birth on 1—4 February)
If the lagna is located in Revati, the child’s life will be in danger immediately after birth. Even if there are simply unfavourable aspects to the Sun — danger to life.

The Sun in the 4th quarter, 20° — 23° 20* of Capricorn (birth on 4—7 February)
Greed, discreditable liaisons. Conflicts with parents and relatives. Many secret enemies. If there are aspects from benefic planets — the result improves.

• Jupiter — a long life, good qualities of character, a high social position;
• Venus — luck, love for the opposite sex, an inclination towards arguments;
• Saturn — fame, a good reputation, benefits from the government. A man who is the owner of the horoscope will be a misogynist.

Mars in the 1st quarter, 10°- 13° 20’ of Capricorn
This position of Mars becomes unfavourable in combination with Saturn in the 1st quarter of Punarvasu — the owner of the horoscope may become a criminal.

Mars in the 2nd quarter, 13° 20’ — 16° 40 ’ of Capricorn
Mars in conjunction with the Sun, the Moon and Saturn speaks of death at the age of 40 as a result of an accident.

Mars in the 3rd quarter, 16° 40’ — 20° of Capricorn
The ancient texts say that if Mars is placed in this quarter and the ascendant — in Jyeshtha, the owner of the horoscope will destroy his younger and elder brothers. Possibly this position of Mars indicates that the owner of the horoscope will outlive his brothers.

Mars in the 4th quarter, 20° — 23° 20’ of Capricorn
The owner of the horoscope will be the eldest child in the family, and there will be a great age difference between him and his younger brother. This position of Mars speaks of the talent of a doctor. If there is an aspect of Jupiter on Mars — service in the government is possible.

Mercury in the 2nd quarter, 13° 20’ — 16° 40’ of Capricorn
If Mercury is conjunct Venus and the lagna is located in Punarvasu, the owner of the horoscope will not marry. However, if some benefic planet aspects this conjunction, the marriage will take place after the age of 40.

Mercury in the 3rd quarter, 16° 40’ — 20° of Capricorn
The owner of the horoscope will have a restless and self-sacrificing character. He will become a prosperous businessman and will achieve great success in the field of economics and finance.

Mercury in the 4th quarter, 20° 23° 20’ of Capricorn
Success in the tourist business. The owner of the horoscope may also become a prosperous estate agent or dealer. He will be cunning, stingy and inconstant in his occupations and attachments.

• Venus — an excellent education and a good position in society;
• Saturn — luck and the fulfilment of desires.

Jupiter in the 1st quarter, 10° — 13° 20’ of Capricorn
The placement of Jupiter alone in this quarter is not significant; however, if it is conjunct the Sun, the Moon and Mars, an ominous combination is formed, which speaks of the possibility of death at the age of 5.

Jupiter in the 2nd quarter, 13° 20’ — 16° 40’ of Capricorn
Death in infancy is possible if Jupiter in this quarter has two or more aspects from malefic planets and the lagna falls in Ardra.

Jupiter in the 3rd quarter, 16° 40’- 20° of Capricorn
If Jupiter is conjunct the Sun, the Moon and Mercury in this quarter, death at the age of 5 is possible.

Jupiter in the 4th quarter, 20° — 23°20* of Capricorn
The owner of the horoscope is endowed with noble aspirations, but because of his inconsistency and irritability he often commits unseemly deeds. Before the age of 32 there will be much suffering in his life, and after 37 he can count on stability and success.

IF VENUS IS PLACED IN SHRAVANA AND ASPECTED BY:

• the Sun — wealth, boldness, great receptivity and a developed imagination;
• the Moon — optimism, attractiveness;
• Mars — the owner of the horoscope works much and hard and faces a multitude of losses: financial and moral;
• Mercury — knowledge of philosophy and religion, fame and renown;
• Jupiter — wealth, an interest in art and music;
• Saturn — happiness in life, a beautiful appearance, but sexual licentiousness.

Venus in the 1st quarter, 10°- 13° 20’ of Capricorn
Venus in this quarter will endow the owner of the horoscope with long-lasting youth and an attractive appearance. He will be exceedingly purposeful, endowed with the ability to adapt to circumstances, and will attain a high position in society.

Venus in the 2nd quarter, 13° 20’ — 16° 40’ of Capricorn
The owner of the horoscope will be modest and moderate in his desires. After the age of 32 unexpected material sufficiency and wealth will come to him. But at 44, when transiting Venus passes over its exact natal degree, a heavy loss awaits the owner of the horoscope.

Venus in the 3rd quarter, 16° 40′- 20° of Capricorn
Venus, the Sun and Saturn in this quarter form an ominous combination of planets, speaking of death at an early age.

Venus in the 4th quarter, 20° — 23° 20’ of Capricorn
A good education, ambitiousness, immorality, boastfulness.

IF SATURN IS PLACED IN SHRAVANA AND ASPECTED BY:

• the Sun — poverty, problems in marriage;
• the Moon — difficult relations with the mother, happiness in marriage, wealth, high morality;
• Mars — emigration, unseemly deeds, bad health;
• Mercury — nobility, wealth, high patronage;
• Jupiter — a high social position.

Saturn in the 1st quarter, 10° — 13° 20’ of Capricorn
Selfishness. The owner of the horoscope may receive a great fortune from his wife’s relatives, but will not be satisfied with what he has and will make the utmost effort to increase his capital.

Saturn in the 2nd quarter, 13° 20’ — 16° 40’ of Capricorn
Vindictiveness. Emigration is possible. The owner of the horoscope will lead a calm life, enjoying family happiness, despite the fact that his marriage partner will be exceedingly sickly.

Saturn in the 3rd quarter, 16° 40’ — 20° of Capricorn
A person in whose horoscope Saturn occupies this position will be reasonable and well educated, but exceedingly mistrustful and suspicious. He will not believe even his own parents and close people.

Saturn in the 4th quarter, 20° — 23° 20’ of Capricorn
The owner of the horoscope will be swarthy and have an asthenic build. He will occupy a high position in society, but will encounter mistrust from those around him, who will be disconcerted by this person’s taciturnity.

RAHU IN SHRAVANA

The 1st quarter, 10° 54’ 13”- 13° 20’ of Capricorn
If Rahu in this quarter is aspected by malefic planets and the lagna falls in Ashlesha, an early death is possible.

The 2nd quarter, 13° 20’ — 16° 40’ of Capricorn
Truthfulness, nobility. The owner of the horoscope performs hard work but receives little money. He is deprived of family happiness.

The 3rd quarter, 16° 40* — 20° of Capricorn
A good education, an average income. The owner of the horoscope will be vindictive and quarrelsome.

The 4th quarter, 20° — 23° 20* of Capricorn
The owner of the horoscope is witty and tactful in communication, but petty and unscrupulous in his means. Sometimes a person who has Rahu occupying this quarter wears the mask of a jester — entertaining others, he himself remains sad.

KETU IN SHRAVANA

The 1st quarter, 13° 20* — 16° 40* of Capricorn
When the lagna also falls in this quarter, the person will have wealth and numerous offspring.

The 2nd quarter, 16° 40* — 20° of Capricorn
The daughters of the horoscope’s owner bring him much sorrow. Deep emotional depressions are possible. If Ketu has aspects from malefic planets, the children will make the life of the horoscope’s owner unhappy.

The 3rd quarter, 20° — 23° 20 * of Capricorn
This position of Ketu indicates that the marriage partner will be the cause of misfortunes for the owner of the horoscope.

The 4th quarter, 23° 20*- 26° 40* of Capricorn
Weakness of health is noted. Bronchitis, pneumonia and tuberculosis are possible. Close people may create problems for the owner of the horoscope.

GENERAL REMARKS

Those who have the Moon placed in the Shravana nakshatra will have difficult relations with those born in Shatabhisha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Ashwini, Magha and Purva Phalguni. The ruler of the dasha of Shravana is the Moon, followed by the periods of Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and Venus.

DESTRUCTIVE DEGREES

Mars -15° of Capricorn
Mercury -22° of Capricorn
Rahu — 20° of Capricorn
Jupiter -11° of Capricorn
Venus — 12° of Capricorn
Saturn -14° of Capricorn
Ketu -12° of Capricorn
Moon -20° of Capricorn

The placement of these planets in the deadly degrees shortens the life span of the horoscope’s owner. One should be careful whenever transiting planets pass over their destructive degrees.
