Ketu in the 6th house

The results given by Ketu in the sixth house of the horoscope

Ketu in the 6th house. This is a strong position, saying that of the whole family in which he was born, this person's position is the highest. These people are able to overcome the resistance of their opponents; they enjoy journeys abroad, or live in luxury. They have decent intuition, they are prudent, good in debates. They may have illnesses of the eyes or teeth. These people are persistent in attaining their goals; usually they want to go their own way, and they go it. (Tom Hopke)

Ketu in the 6th house, Rahu in the 12th house

The 12th house shows more distance, isolation, sufferings, illnesses. Rahu is a violator of the law. Rahu in the 12th house gives problems with the law and court cases. This is a typical placement for crime. Rahu in the 12th house does not always give a prison term. Rahu makes the person end up in such places where people suffer or are in isolation, for example a prison, a hospital, monasteries, old people's homes and so on. Sometimes people with such a placement find work in these places. Such a placement of Rahu can be observed in judicial and medical workers, in volunteers. Such people often go away to distant countries and live far from their family.

When Rahu in the 12th is under the aspect of malefics, even if the person is abroad, he will all the same have to go through a hard path. One must be especially careful during the period of the Mahadasha of Rahu. The 12th house shows death and moksha. Rahu in the 12th house means that in this life the person needs to take up spiritual practices. Rahu gives the person problems so that he may understand in what direction he needs to move in order to be rid of sufferings. The 12th house also shows losses and liberation. In order to obtain liberation one must be rid of material attachments. We see Rahu in the 12th house in those people who strive strongly for eternal joy. In many monks, priests and ascetics one can see Rahu in the 12th house. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)

Ketu in the 6th house

Ketu in the 6th house: noble aspirations, a firm will, success in undertakings, fortune, power, fame, popularity, material goods, the attainment of goals. Has many enemies, but defeats them; bad relations with the maternal uncle. A strong immune system and good health, developed intuition and occult abilities.

During the antardasha of Ketu in the 6th house aspected by Saturn health may deteriorate. (Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)

Ketu in the 6th house, Rahu in the 12th house: the karmic task

This placement of the nodes more than any other can throw the person from one extreme to another. This placement makes the line between genius and  madness, self-awareness and paranoia almost imperceptible. To balance these extremes is quite difficult  and often on such people lies the stamp of an insuperable predetermination.

Ketu in the 6th house gives worldly riches and power. The probability of this increases if Jupiter is connected with Ketu through an aspect or a conjunction.

Ketu in the 6th prompts the person to expect too much from his subordinates. It is also difficult for him himself to follow the orders of others, and he feels bad in an ordinary job from 9 to 18.00. Independent entrepreneurship is more suitable for his mentality.

The native is not recommended (since he has such an inclination) to immerse himself particularly in the themes of the 6th house, such as: illnesses, servants, enemies and so on. Such people have no lack of enemies, created by themselves or sent by fate, and they often lack diplomacy in relations with their opponents.

Ketu in the 6th gives the person clear notions about the ethics of work, purity and morality, and this prompts the native to pronounce his judgements and to impose his ideas on others.

The willpower inherent in such a person allows him sooner or later to achieve his goals. But he needs to restrain his impulses to extend his influence over everything around.

Rahu in the 12th house emphasises the importance for the person of the indications of the 12th house, such as receptivity, speculations, seclusion, fate, past lives, karma, escape from reality, excessive indulgence of the senses, a striving for luxury, losses, expenditures, charity, connection with foreign countries, restrictions, imprisonment, connection with the subtle planes of being, fantasy, paranoia, the subconscious, dreams, visions, sorrow, renunciation, liberation.

If one takes into account all the above-listed indications of the 12th house and imagines that they will become the basis of the field of activity for such a person, then it becomes clear why even elevated souls cope with difficulty with this combination of the nodes.

Usually such people easily become accustomed to intoxications of any kind, and smoking is a real scourge for them. They often develop desires to dissolve their ego in the sea of illusions caused by excessive indulgence of their senses. A strong Ascendant may diminish the bad results of this placement of the nodes. Half the problems can be solved if such a person is able to abstain from alcohol and drugs. He also must not blindly follow the instructions of religious organisations.

The positive side of this combination is the frequently encountered interest of the native in supernatural forces and it allows him to look beyond the limits of our everyday reality.

People with such a placement often become doctors, healers, nurses, mediums, preachers, consultants, lawyers, social workers, politicians, investigators, legislators. Rahu in the 12th also brings in some foreign influence, which is connected with the indications of the dispositor of Rahu, or with the indications of the planets connected with Rahu. This placement of the nodes also gives the strangest illnesses and  disorders.

The karmic task for this placement is to learn to direct the fruits of the 6th house (intensive work, the service of subordinates, the overcoming of difficulties) into the channel of the 12th house, that is, to connect all this with the higher goal of life and to try to make all this contribute to final liberation.

“Bhrigu Sutra” 8.14-16

A person who has the shadow planets occupying the 6th house will be patient and happy. If Rahu or Ketu are in conjunction with the Moon, sexual relations with women of the royal family, poverty and an inclination towards theft may be expected.

Other opinions concerning Ketu in the 6th house:

“Phaladipika”: Ketu in the 6th house — nobility, decisiveness, fame and authority.

“Chamatkar Chintamani”: Ketu in the 6th house — the ownership of horned cattle and the loss of reputation because of the maternal uncle await a person in whose horoscope Ketu is placed in the 6th house. He will have good health, but a limited intellect.

Note: Bhrigu Muni gives the same characteristics for the placement of Rahu and Ketu in various houses. His opinion is based on the fact that these planets are always in the seventh house from each other and both exert an influence on the house. However the other classical texts, apart from the “Brihat Jataka” and the “Saravali”, which do not describe the results of the placement of the shadow planets in the houses of the horoscope, hold a different opinion.

We should like to add several important remarks concerning the placement of Rahu and Ketu in the houses of the horoscope. Concerning the characteristics of these planets there are three main opinions: 1) they act as the lord of the sign that they occupy, 2) their nature is like that of Mars and Saturn, and also 3) the view of Kalidasa given below. An experienced astrologer intuitively understands what influences the shadow planets conduct when he analyses a horoscope or draws up forecasts.

Relying on the famous classical work of Kalidasa, the “Uttara Kalamrita”, it may be said that, being shadow planets, these planets are not regarded as the lords of any houses or signs. If Rahu and Ketu are in conjunction (in the same sign) with a planet, then they take on its qualities, become conductors of its energy, and in their periods, or bhuktis, act like that planet. When the shadow planets do not enter into a conjunction — they give the results of the planet aspecting them. And only when Rahu and Ketu are neither joined nor aspected by planets do they act as the lord of the sign in which they are placed.

If one of the two nodes and the lord of a triad are placed in conjunction in the 9th or 10th houses or if one of them is in the 9th, and the other in the 10th, a favourable yoga is formed, which will bring prosperity to the owner of the horoscope. If at the same time a malefic planet enters into a conjunction with or aspects one of the shadow planets, then the bhukti [sub-period] of the yoga-karaka will prove unfavourable.

And a last remark. Rahu and Ketu become beneficial when they occupy the positions of a triad or of a kendra from the lagna. The shadow planets also prove beneficial when they are joined with the lords of a house of a triad or of a quadrant. But if at the same time the lord of the 9th house also owns the 8th (in the case of Gemini rising), or the 12th (in the case of Libra rising), and also if the lords of the 9th or 10th houses are joined with the lords of the 8th and 12th houses, the beneficial results of the yoga are lost.

The results of the placement of Ketu in the 6th house

If in the birth chart Ketu is placed in the 6th Bhava, then there will be the destruction of the person's enemies, happiness thanks to animals (for example, horned cattle or the like), a growth of wealth, an absence of illnesses in the body, but the native will receive disrespect from relatives on the mother's side.

Comments: Ketu has the nature and qualities of Mangala [Mars], therefore it is quite certain that the person's enemies will be destroyed. In the natural birth chart the 6th Bhava [house] is the Bhava of Buddha [Mercury]. Mangala [Mars] is a hostile Graha [planet] for Buddha, and Buddha is considered the Karaka [significator] of relatives on the mother's side (the maternal uncle). Therefore it is very possible that Ketu (like Mangala) may cause unpleasant and hostile relations of the person with relatives on the mother's side (with the maternal uncle). According to Maharishi Garga Ketu in the 6th house causes illnesses of the teeth and lips.

The author of the treatise ‘Jataka Parijata’ writes that Ketu in the 6th Bhava is very favourable, on account of which the person is loved by his brothers and sisters (brothers), he is generous, possesses good qualities, is famous and will receive a reputation and authority thanks to his learning and education.
