Mars in the 4th house

The results given by Mars in the fourth house of the horoscope

People with Mars in the fourth house are passionate people; it is difficult to maintain close relations with them. They are strong in the sphere of sex, have a responsive but competitively inclined heart, they own property and are respected in their circle. There is a loss of money invested in a risky venture. This placement is called Kuja dosha, “the harmful influence of Mars”, and often leads to divorce or a double marriage. (Tom Hopke)

In the 4th house Mars feels uncomfortable. This is the house of thinking, education, relations with relatives, and peace of mind. Mars does not like to think and philosophise. His thoughts carry Martian energy. Such people often suffer from a lack of peace of mind. This is an unhappy person; they often have quarrels with relatives. This is the house of the mother: if Mars is in the 4th house, such a person’s relations with his mother may deteriorate, or he may part with her early. Mars also destroys the relative symbolised by the house where it is located. Therefore this is a bad placement for the mother’s health. One must always look at the aspects and the location of the lord of the house. If all these indicators are well placed without damage, the mother may avoid bad events.

Mars also means real estate. The 4th house also means real estate, therefore in the 4th house Mars gives real estate. But he will have to work hard for this; the person will not obtain it easily. Possibly because of the real estate he will have to quarrel with relatives, and he may also lose it all. Mars only knows how to destroy everything that is around it. The 4th house also means education. Mars in the 4th house gives problems in study. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)

Mars (Mangala) in the 4th house

The 4th house symbolises the heart, and Mars, placed in it, speaks of a “hot” heart — a passionate temperament and jealousy. It gives the ownership of considerable property, several marriages and unsuccessful investments. (Indubala)

Mars in the 4th house: the person has a robust build and has landed property; heart diseases and accidents, pains in the chest area are likely. Difficulties in school education, strained relations with brothers, usually because of his own wife. This position exerts a negative influence on the lives of those members of the family signified by the houses ruled by Mars. Mars in the 4th house calms down quickly if a little love is shown. Mars in a dual sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) in the Lagna, the 4th or the 10th house grants prosperity during its dasha. “Bhrigu Sutra” 3.26-33

In the family of a person who has Mars in the 4th house of the horoscope, misfortunes and calamities are to be expected. His father may die in his eighth year of life, and his mother will have poor health. He himself will be healthy, but he will have to live in a half-ruined, dilapidated house, in poverty, without land of his own. His relations with close relatives may be hostile, and he will live far from his place of birth. He may have no beautiful clothes of his own. If Mars is conjunct with its enemy Mercury, the owner of the horoscope will not have his own house, living in another’s. If Mars is in its own sign or in exaltation, and also in conjunction with a favourable planet or placed in a friendly sign, the owner of the horoscope will have means of transport and landed property and his mother will live long. When Mars is placed in its sign of weakness, Cancer, and is conjunct with a ruinous planet or with the lord of the 8th house, the owner of the horoscope will experience the loss of his mother in the early period of his life.

Comments:

Mars is one of the strongest ruinous planets. Its placement in the 4th house destroys all the good indications of the house, bringing disturbance into family and personal life, illnesses of the mother, an absence of landed property and problems with academic education. This placement is called kuja dosha — “the harmful influence of Mars”.

Mars from the 4th house influences the 10th, which is the maraka sthana for the father of the owner of the horoscope, being the second in relation to the 9th house. This influence explains the early death of the father.

It remains only to bow before the wisdom of the great rishi and the mercy with which he gives knowledge, since this fact has repeatedly been confirmed by our practical experience. It is emphasised that a fortunate placement of Mars in a sign gives favourable results: the possession of means of transport and landed property, a good education, a long life for the mother. If Mars is placed in Aries, Capricorn rises, and Mars itself is the lord of the 4th and 11th houses. If Mars is in Scorpio, the lagna will be in Leo (for which Mars is the yoga karaka, the planet of strength), and it will be the lord of the 4th and 9th houses. If Mars is in Capricorn, then the lagna is in Libra, and Mars becomes the lord of the 4th and 7th houses. All these placements lead to the formation of strong dhana yogas (combinations of Planets indicating wealth). Besides this, being in a quadrant, Mars also forms the benefic ruchaka yoga, speaking
of the person’s great energy, leadership, and success in competition and sport.

Other opinions concerning Mars in the 4th house:

“Brihat Jataka” — an absence of happiness in family life.

“Phaladipika” — a person in whose horoscope Mars is in the 4th house will lose his mother early and will be deprived of happiness, friends, means of transport and landed property.

“Saravali” — the owner of the horoscope will have no house, good clothes or grain. He will live in a house not belonging to him and will be unhappy.

“Chamatkar Chintamani” — despite the fact that other planets may be favourable in the horoscope, if Mars is in the 4th house of the horoscope, the person will be deprived of happiness from father, mother, wife and children. But he will be able to obtain land and property thanks to the favour of the king and the government.

Note: All the classical texts describe negative results of the presence of Mars in the 4th house. But in sutras 28, 30 and 32 positive characteristics of the placement of Mars in the signs of Scorpio, Aries and Capricorn are noted, which are not taken into account by the other authors. The obtaining of land and property described in the “Chamatkar Chintamani” is possible with a favourable influence on Mars from the 10th house or with a good conjunction. Also, on the basis of our own practical experience, one may emphasise the importance of the placement of the lord of the 4th house for final conclusions.

THE RESULTS OF THE PLACEMENT OF MANGALA IN THE 4TH  BHAVA

If at the moment of a person’s birth Mangala is placed in the 4th Bhava, then the ancient experienced astrologers give such results: the person will receive pain (grief) becauseof his friends and means of transport, there is a likelihood of receiving injuries (a wound) in transport, and his body will be sickly and weak.

Comments: In the 4th Bhava [house] Mangala [Mars] is devoid of directional strength <Dig Bala>. That is precisely why all the authors of Vedic astrology predict unfavourable results from the placement of Mangala in the 4th Bhava. People with this placement will receive no support from their relatives; there will be disputes and conflicts over immovable property. Such a person, as a rule, lives far from his place of birth. He lacks bravery, or his bravery is distorted (brings harm) and he lacks endurance. The person may be enraged, emotional and impetuous. The placement of Mangala in the 4th Bhava is unfavourable for the person’s wife; there is always a danger of her having a disease of the blood or the heart. If Mangala is placed in a fiery Rashi [sign] and is aspected by a Graha with the primary element Fire (‘Agni’), then there is a danger that the person’s house may catch fire.
