Magha Nakshatra

Date 26 Dec 2022
Magha Nakshatra

The nakshatra Magha — the 10th of the 27 nakshatras, 0°00′-13°20′ of Leo.

«The Moon in Magha gives a multitude of servants, a need to venerate the gods and the ancestors, and occupation with important affairs» (Varahamihira).

General indications: the symbol of Magha is the royal throne room, and its presiding deities are the Pitris — the progenitors of the family, who to this day are constantly venerated in traditional Hindu families. The bright royal star Regulus is its main star.

The throne room, the place of diplomatic conversations, protocol and ceremonies, evokes images of splendour and royalty, of noble and outstanding persons and of the setting of important goals and questions, although Magha may also be associated with restlessness caused by personal ambition. The lagna or the Moon here often indicates royal manners and a weakness for the opposite sex. All other things being equal, the royal planets the Sun and Mars prosper in Magha, but the servant planets (Saturn, Rahu and Ketu) feel very awkward here.

The ancestors — the support of all previous generations, whose consecutive succession is the meaning of existence — are linked in our consciousness with old traditions, with the male and female lines of the lineage. Our ancestors grant us our precious lives — a gift often presented in a natural biological impulse of reproduction, without any hope of compensation or gratitude. In this sense Magha represents gifts — freely given or bestowed without any ulterior motive — and thus implies support. In which spheres of life these gifts will be received most often depends on whether the planets occupying Magha, and the houses they rule or are located in, are harmonious with it. Sometimes the house of the horoscope into which Magha falls indicates the area where one can count on good fortune; if, for example, Magha falls into the 10th house, one can count on the generosity of fate in career matters. The same principle applies to the lord of the house; the lord of the 10th house placed in Magha may give carte blanche in one’s career.

Physiology and diseases: the nose, lips and chin.

Professions, people and places of habitation: those who work in large enterprises and large corporations: civil servants, people heading major structures and big business. Lawyers and judges. Boards of directors. People engaged in the study of genealogies. Historians, archaeologists, registry office employees. Keepers and continuers of traditions — privileged universities, societies, clubs and everything else connected with them.

«Magha has swarthy skin, the head of a monkey and a lean body with a bloated belly. She rides on a black ghoul, holding in her hands the sacred kusha grass and a ball of dough» («Chaturvarga-chintamani» by Hemadri)

The key concept of the nakshatra Magha

To be royal, to lead, to stimulate, to inspire.

Magha opens the sequence of nakshatras whose main quality is the striving to preserve the acquired state. This is the first nakshatra that touches upon the process of individuation and represents everything we mean when we say «I». A person is accustomed to identifying himself with the body and the mind, yet thinking and the intellect are given the task of realising one’s true essence as an eternal and immortal soul. Magha makes it possible to understand who we are and where we came from.

Magha shapes the present using the past. Wherever this nakshatra is located in the horoscope, it will certainly give a positive result brought about by accumulated karma. This may be the inheritance of property, wealth or status, the favour of those who occupy a high position, or the successful use of knowledge acquired at some time to achieve current goals.

Magha is a very worldly nakshatra, interested in human affairs. It can instil in a person a passionate desire for material achievements or, on the contrary, free them from it. In its highest manifestation the nakshatra personifies one who remains an idealist even when surrounded by earthly goods. Magha is connected with preservation. Its main impulse is directed at maintaining existing traditions, organisations and civilisations. Usually this is the task of those in power.

Ascendant in Magha — Donald Trump

Personalities with a rising or strong Magha are easily recognisable outwardly: a large nose, medium height, a lion-like figure with a heavy upper body, a regal bearing. They behave haughtily and reservedly, thereby concealing their shortcomings.

Magha people look up to their ancestors, feel deep respect for their elders and gladly adopt their experience, and know the customs and culture of their nation. They are much concerned with the continuation of the family line and expect a great deal from their offspring, for example an increase in the family’s renown.

They are magnanimous towards those who have been less fortunate in life. Sometimes they engage in charity. If means allow, they may direct them towards activity useful for the whole of society. Observance of moral and ethical norms is necessary to them for inner peace.

Those born under Magha always strive to attain maximum results. Outstanding leaders often come from among them. They are optimists and are well-rounded, yet by their straightforwardness and arrogance they may repel those around them.

In this nakshatra a strong influence of the ancestors and of the clan can be traced. A person immediately comes to understand that it is not for nothing that we are born from the very start into a particular family. The nakshatra gives hardening, difficulties and trials, which either temper a person and make a hero out of him, or bring him to the grave. There may be losses in certain periods, and it will be very difficult to change this because of the original influence of the karma of the clan and the ancestors.

Magha also indicates love for the family and for traditions, and since it is responsible for the ancestors, a veneration of the ancestors and of traditions in some form and a love of rituals are observed here. There may be a gift for communicating with the ancestors and abilities for working with the clan. These are leader-people with ambitions, strong and devoted.

In this nakshatra the ego is strongly developed, and there may be a sense of superiority over others.

«The Moon in Magha gives a multitude of servants, wealth, life in comfort, a love of worshipping the gods and the ancestors, and participation in important work» (Varahamihira).

Magha men

Their appearance is very contrasting — a harmless and innocent look combined with the powerful neck of a wrestler and a hairy body.

A good knowledge of the sciences and of various fields inclines them to change their type of activity frequently. At the same time, as a rule, they work diligently and selflessly. They are straightforward and dislike lies and boorish behaviour. They honour their elders, are restrained in speech, religious and respected by those around them. They are able to follow through on decisions taken, but show no flexibility in business and professional activity, which prevents them from reaching career and financial heights.

A happy and harmonious family life and, as a reward, good children. Saturn in Magha under an aspect from Mars can spoil the family idyll.

They are predisposed to insomnia, asthma and epilepsy.

Magha women

Their appearance is attractive; the eye is especially drawn to their amazingly thick and long hair.

They are sociable and prefer to live in comfort and luxury. They know how to show mercy and to support people in trouble. An innate hot temper can lead to conflicts with friends and close ones, especially with the husband’s relatives. The spouse is most often an influential person. There is mutual understanding with the children.

On the whole they have robust health. Problems arise with eyesight, the circulatory system and the uterus.

The padas (quarters) of the nakshatra Magha

The 1st pada of the nakshatra Magha (00°00′ — 3°20′ of Leo) falls into the navamsha of Aries, ruled by Mars. It is connected with the wilful, leadership aspect of Magha and fully reveals such of its qualities as self-confidence, courage and idealism. It can give a striking appearance, the ability to take on several matters at once and bring them all to completion, and the respect of subordinates and superiors.

The 2nd pada of the nakshatra Magha (3°20′ — 6°40′ of Leo) falls into the navamsha of Taurus, ruled by Venus. This is a very ambitious pada, focused on image and duty. Planets in it bring the patronage of superiors, anxiety and ill fame.

The 3rd pada of the nakshatra Magha (6°40′ — 10°00′ of Leo) falls into the navamsha of Gemini, ruled by Mercury. It places the accent on the often ignored intellectual side of Magha, its mental activity and striving for knowledge (the living heritage of ancient times!). Planets placed here allow one to achieve success only with the support of a collective, and create conflicts in the family.

The 4th pada of the nakshatra Magha (10°00′ — 13°20′ of Leo) falls into the navamsha of Cancer, ruled by the Moon. This pada reveals the nakshatra’s love of rituals, ceremonies and the veneration of ancestors, instils a concern for the well-being of one’s «subjects», and concentrates attention on domestic life and the continuation of the family line. Planets located in this quarter give sexuality and a feeling of pride in one’s family.

The ruling planet of the nakshatra Magha

The ruler of Magha is Ketu, one of whose main symbols — the flag — is directly connected with power, nobility, fame and similar things. A privileged position in the present is earned by worthy conduct in past incarnations. Ketu is the keeper of the karma we have accumulated, and through Magha he sends everything that must be experienced.

By displaying such «solar» qualities of Ketu as deep understanding, insight and independence, Magha reveals his royal side. In essence it unites within itself the energies of Ketu and the Sun. The latter is connected with Magha by virtue of being the ruler of Leo — the sign in which the nakshatra is located.

In the horoscope Ketu shows the paternal grandfather and the maternal grandmother. Our connection with the ancestors is conditioned by previous lives, which are the sphere of Ketu’s influence. It may be said that it is precisely he who endows Magha with an interest in inheritance (in the broad sense of the word).

A conjunction of the Sun with Ketu in the natal chart generates an energy similar to the energy of Magha. In this «fiery» nakshatra the Sun and Mars are comfortable, yet the planet of service, Saturn, also feels in it like a fish in water.

Professions of the nakshatra Magha

Parliamentarian, administrator, manager, bureaucrat, official, secretary in the structures of power. Lawyer, advocate, judge, referee. Professions connected with museums and the study of ancient knowledge: historian, librarian, keeper of traditions, archaeologist, antiquarian, researcher of the family tree and so on. Orator, performer, playwright, musician. Occultist, black magician. Astrologer. Genetic engineer. Entrepreneur.

Deserts and forests. Capitals, palaces, residences of political leaders, government offices. Libraries, museums, ancient monuments, sights, national memorials. Stages and exhibition halls. Places connected with the holding of various ceremonies, with religion and spirituality. Crematoria.

Favourable activity under the nakshatra Magha

The holding of various ceremonies (including wedding ones) and solemn events. Coronation. Performing in public (as an orator, musician, actor and so on). Researching the family tree, studying history and ancient knowledge. Acquiring a new name. Improving or raising the quality of something (property, qualifications and so on). Implementing a career strategy, promotion at work. Settling disputes and conflicts. Gaining the favour of people vested with power. Presenting a special, exquisite gift. Any religious activity, especially the worship of ancestors.

The ancestors receive the remnants of the heavenly nectar of immortality on the day of the new moon

Unfavourable activity under the nakshatra Magha

Performing routine, everyday work. Granting a loan or credit. Ingratiating oneself with someone. Forecasting, planning the future. Undergoing a medical examination. Applying new technologies.

Illnesses connected with the nakshatra Magha

Problems with the heart, the stomach, the skin around the mouth, ulcers.

THE TENTH STAR — MAGHA

0° 00’- 13° 20’ OF LEO

The Greek name is Regulus. The nakshatra consists of six stars. «Magha» is translated as «the strong one». It represents people occupying an important, significant position, having power over others, and continuing the traditions of their families. Magha
is a demonic star, bad by its nature, but if the lagna is located in it, it brings luck to the owner of the horoscope.
The presiding deities are the Pitaras (fathers, ancestors), and the symbol of the nakshatra is  the royal chambers.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PEOPLE BORN UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF MAGHA

Their relations with other people are well thought out, they do not wish to be a cause of trouble, and if they have offended anyone they try to make amends. They are temperamental. They cannot stand aside if some activity is at odds with the truth, and therefore they may have many secret enemies. They are selfless and do not seek gain in their actions.

Because of their straightforwardness it is difficult for them to achieve great success in the professional field. They frequently change their place of work. Life consists of ups and downs. They take on many obligations.

As a rule they have a happy, harmonious family life and good children. The exception is when Saturn is located in the same place in the horoscope, or there is an aspect from Mars.

They may suffer from insomnia. Asthma, epilepsy and cancer are possible.

Magha women

Beautiful facial features, an enormous mane of hair, especially if Saturn
aspects the Moon in this nakshatra. They are sociable, but inclined to quarrels and are hot-tempered.

They will enjoy «royal» comforts. They willingly help those who have fallen into trouble.

They are religious. If Jupiter is also placed in Magha, their social position and post are very high, and the husband is exceedingly rich.

If Mars is also placed in this quarter, or Mars aspects Venus, the owner of the horoscope will feel a passionate attraction to his partner and will suffer from the partner’s immorality. Venus in the 4th quarter, 10° 00’ — 13° 20’ of Leo
A high level of intelligence, public recognition. The owner of the horoscope will have a noticeable mole or scar on the ears. His married life cannot be called happy because of the cold and at times indifferent attitude of the partner.

Saturn in Magha

If Saturn is placed in Magha and aspected by:

  • the Sun — poverty. The owner of the horoscope is untruthful and inclined towards alcoholism;
  • the Moon — wealth, luck, the company of beautiful women;
  • Mars — much travelling, a withdrawn character, the absence of a family of one’s own;
  • Mercury — poverty, laziness;
  • Jupiter — family happiness, the respect of those around, a leading post, wealth;
  • Venus — the owner of the horoscope will receive a large inheritance in the second half of his life.

Saturn in the 1st quarter, 0° 00’ — 3° 20’ of Leo
The owner of the horoscope will be of medium height and sturdy build. He will occupy a leading post, but his subordinates will be dissatisfied with his harsh manner of leadership. Stubbornness may be called the distinctive trait of his character, and therefore frequent conflicts are possible in marital relations as well. On the other hand, the children
will bring him joy. Health problems are possible, up to and including
incapacity for work, speech disorders or paralysis.

Saturn in the 2nd quarter, 3° 20’ — 6° 40’ of Leo
Problems in the family, two marriages are possible.

Saturn in the 3rd quarter, 6° 40’ — 10° 00’ of Leo
This position of Saturn is unfavourable and brings misfortunes in marriage because of the partner, who may become a cause of shame and dishonour for the whole family.

If the Moon is also placed in this quarter, the owner of the horoscope will acquire good vehicles and will occupy a leading post, but will be poor and inclined towards extramarital affairs.

Saturn in the 4th quarter, 10° 00’ — 13° 20’ of Leo
Persistence, stubbornness, sincerity and devotion to one’s cause will be
characteristic of the owner of the horoscope. Income from vehicles is possible.

Rahu in Magha

The 1st quarter, 0° 00’ — 3° 20’ of Leo
This position of Rahu is a sign of high birth and good prosperity. If the lagna falls in Purva Bhadrapada, two marriages are possible.

The 2nd quarter, 3° 20’ — 6° 40’ of Leo
The owner of the horoscope will come to earn money through illegal activity. The influence of Mars on Rahu will bring an absence of family happiness.

The 3rd quarter, 6° 40’ — 10° 00’ of Leo
The placement of Rahu in this quarter speaks of skin diseases. If Rahu
is aspected by Mars or is conjunct it, abscesses or malignant tumours are possible. An aspect from Mercury indicates the possibility of a venereal disease.

The 4th quarter, 10° 00’ — 13° 20’ of Leo
This is a relatively good position for Rahu in Magha, which will bring wealth and family happiness. The owner of the horoscope may become the head of an institute or a research centre. In the opinion of those around him, the owner of the horoscope is a rather eccentric person. He does several things at once and is very forgetful and disorganised. Asthma is possible.

Ketu in Magha

The 1st quarter, 0° 00’ — 3° 20’ of Leo
Attachment to gambling, great losses in various areas of life.

The 2nd quarter, 3° 20’ — 6° 40’ of Leo
The owner of the horoscope leads a withdrawn way of life. During the first half of his life he travels a great deal in search of fortune, and then returns home. If Ketu occupies this position in a woman’s horoscope, she may become a widow.

The 3rd quarter, 6° 40′ — 10° 00′ of Leo
Ups and downs in the professional sphere. If the lagna falls in Shatabhisha and Ketu is placed in this quarter in a woman’s horoscope, the loss of the husband in the 37th year of life is possible, while in a man’s horoscope these positions indicate widowhood at the age of 40.

The 4th quarter, 10° 00’ — 13° 20’ of Leo
If the lagna is also placed in this quarter in a man’s horoscope, he may attain the highest position in the army.

General remarks concerning the nakshatra Magha

Those who are born in the Magha nakshatra will have problems in relationships with people born in Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Rohini.

The ruler of the birth star is Ketu, then follow the periods of Venus, the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Rahu and so on.

Destructive degrees

Sun — 8° of Leo
Mercury — 8° of Leo
Jupiter — 6° of Leo
Venus — 10° of Leo
Saturn — 12° of Leo

If even one of the planets is placed in the degrees listed above, this shortens the life span of the horoscope’s owner, but a strong aspect of Mars and the Moon somewhat neutralises these indications. During transits of the planets over the corresponding degrees, one should not begin any auspicious undertakings.

based on the material of the books «Vedic Astrology of Matrimony» (Indubala)

and «Nakshatras. Life under a Lucky Star» (R. Blekt)

* * * * * * * * *

A peculiarity of this nakshatra is that it begins a new set of nine nakshatras. Magha consists of 6 stars, the brightest of which is Regulus.

The symbol of this star is a palanquin, as an attribute of royal power and rule. A palanquin is a richly decorated litter in which royal persons were carried in former epochs.

The ruling planet is Ketu. We have already passed through 9 stars, and 9 planets have divided the rulership of these nakshatras among themselves, and now the cycle begins anew. That is, the nakshatra following Magha will be under the rulership of Venus, the next under the rulership of the Sun, and so on. This makes it easier for us to remember the connection between the nakshatras and the planets and accordingly to calculate the planetary periods in a person’s life.

Thus the nakshatra is under the rulership of 2 planets — the Sun, which rules Leo, and Ketu, which rules the nakshatra directly. The Sun here represents royalty, the ability to hold sway and to govern. Ketu, meanwhile, is a symbol of mysticism. And in such a combination this may be read as — mystical rule.

Magha gives a special kind of energy, which is called tyagi-kshipani-shakti. Tyagi is renunciation, abandonment. And tyagi-kshipani-shakti means the ability to leave one’s body, the ability to leave this world under one’s own control, quitting the perishable body. And the well-known mystic-yogi Paramahamsa Yogananda had the placement of the Moon and the lagna in precisely this nakshatra in his horoscope. And he left his body, departed this world, during the period of Rahu-Ketu, which presupposes spiritual liberation according to the ancient texts.

The presiding deities are the Pitris. The Pitris are the ancestors. And one of the most important aspects of Vedic culture is the veneration of the ancestors, that is, the expression of one’s reverence as a token of gratitude, a way of paying due tribute to those persons thanks to whom I received birth and the ability to perfect myself, to realise my position and to take up spiritual practice.

In the modern understanding the Pitris are Guardian Angels. In the Vedas it is said that every person has spiritual helpers among the ancestors, who may have died very, very long ago, but who nevertheless afford us protection and support.

The Pitris, or ancestors, are also called the original progenitors of the human race. And in families where Vedic traditions have been preserved to this day, worship of the ancestors is performed on certain days. And it is precisely on the Pitris that the maintenance of traditions and the spiritual purity of a nation and of the world as a whole depend. Also, the whole dynasty, the whole line of relatives, endows a person with a certain kind of might and certain powers, and makes a person successful.

Magha manifests itself in a person as the presence of goals in life, an inclination towards leadership, the ability to govern, the ability to attain power, pride in belonging to one family or another, and also devotion to the disciplic succession — that is, a person takes pride in receiving discipleship in a particular chain of transmission of spiritual knowledge from teacher to student.

These people are usually very generous, have a big heart, and are devoted to those they love. They treat traditions with great respect and derive great joy from taking part in or conducting ceremonies or rituals.

There are very many talented actors under this nakshatra, those who display their talents on the stage, in one form of art or another.

Magha, among other things, represents the process of personalisation, the individuation of our soul, of our nature. Vedic scripture divides spiritual practice into the impersonal and the personal. And impersonal practice or philosophy implies a view of the living being as a particle of a general whole, of divine energy, of unformed divine energy, which is called Brahman.

And this non-personal aspect of the soul finds its transformation here, and a person begins to develop himself as a spiritual entity, but one possessing all the qualities of a personality. And in the stars we have already studied, such deep analysis was not observed. The development of a strong ego, that is, the awareness of oneself as a personality, is necessary for the soul in order to complete the mission of understanding its status and its nature.

Magha bestows on a person a vivid nature, prosperity, the ability to govern, to hold sway and also to achieve victory.

The shadow side of this star is haughtiness, arrogance and racial superiority. That is, in a positive key a person feels a certain pride that he belongs to a particular dynasty, a particular family line, a disciplic chain and so on.

But when the energies of the star Magha are coloured by passion and ignorance, then haughtiness and a sense of one’s own superiority appear, which leads to a biased attitude towards people and to arrogance.

Another shadow side of this nakshatra is a constant feeling of self-doubt, which leads to these people beginning to prove to those around them what they themselves are not sure of. And this may lead to a person being excessively in need of praise and approval.

The main mood for this nakshatra is Artha, and therefore people born under this star may be deeply attached to attaining material prosperity.

They set themselves hard-to-attain goals and perfectionist plans, may make heightened demands on others, and try to act perfectly. But because of their scrupulousness they often do not reach the height they have set.

Magha is a star of ugra nature, that is, furious and fierce — and these people are easily driven out of temper; they can be very enraged in anger. But they have, as they say, no double bottom: the feelings they express at a given moment are absolutely sincere.

In ancient times thousands of rishis and saints were in deep mediation to perform penance at this temple. The women, wanting to refrain from disturbing the rishis and saints, developed the habit of worshipping from a distance.

Mahaththavam is when the service to God is entrusted by the spiritual teacher continues until the teacher orders it to stop.
