Saturn in the 1st house: This indicates a reliable worker, having, to his credit, a certain humility. These people have failures during the period of youth, and in the course of their life they should expect some family discord. Saturn in the first house: Tall, thin, calm, serious, weak, sluggish, gloomy, dirty. They have a swarthy, pale (not ruddy) face with deep-set eyes, unhealthy teeth, which fall out early. They go bald early. These people love solitude and want to do everything alone. A sickly childhood. The person will be attractive if the sign of Libra is in the 1st house (the lagna). Saturn in the 1st house slows down the person's development. The person meets with constant obstacles in all areas of life. They feel that success passes them by. Saturn gives them success, but it only comes with a delay. The person is often ill. At the beginning of life they will have to go through a hard path. Monotonous, uniform, slow, systematic actions are observed in them.
If Saturn is in the first house in the sign of Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius, a shasha yoga is formed for him (one of the pancha-maha-purusha yogas), in which case the negative influence of Saturn is diminished. The negative results are also diminished when the sign of Sagittarius or Pisces is in the 1st house. If the sign of Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces is in the 1st house, Saturn will bring favourable results and the person becomes very active, purposeful and will be able to go forward, overcoming any barrier. Such a Saturn makes the person clever, disciplined, diplomatic, a chief. These indications are strengthened still further if Saturn receives an aspect from Jupiter.
Indira Gandhi had Saturn in the 1st house in the sign of an enemy (Cancer) and hemmed in between Mars and Ketu. It is no accident that she was called the Iron woman. Saturn (Shani) in the 1st house
Saturn in the 1st house: an ordinary outward appearance, anxieties, an absence of faith in God, indispositions, physical defects, chronic illnesses, obstacles. Works to a schedule, accumulates savings slowly.
If Saturn is placed in Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces, then it gives education, an attractive appearance, leanness, restraint, an obsession with one's own achievements, longevity. When Saturn is in the Lagna in the signs of Libra, Sagittarius or Pisces, it grants wealth and prosperity. The placement of Saturn in the Lagna in the signs of Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Scorpio is unfavourable.
A weak and afflicted Saturn in the Lagna under the aspect of an inauspicious planet from the 7th house may deprive the person of sexual potency and be an indication of a joyless personal life.

Comments:
The 1st house is the house of health, therefore its affliction by Saturn causes illnesses according to the functions of this planet. Influencing the 7th house from the 1st, Saturn in the 1st house speaks of problems in marriage. Very good results are ascribed to Saturn being in Libra in the 1st house, since in that case Saturn is a yoga-karaka, the lord of the 4th and 5th houses. In this position Saturn will undoubtedly bring very favourable results: wealth, a good education, happiness in children, fame and popularity. In the sutras it is said that being in Capricorn and Aquarius, Saturn in the lagna speaks of the wealth of the father. This is explained by the favourable nature of Saturn for these rising signs and by the influence of Saturn on the 10th house, which is the second (the house of wealth) to the 9th house (the house of the father). For the rising signs of Taurus and Gemini, Saturn in the 1st house will be the lord of the 9th house and will also bring prosperity and a long life to the father of the owner of the horoscope.
As the ayush-karaka, the indicator of the length of life, Saturn, being in the 1st house, speaks of a long life and, possibly, of sufferings in the period of youth. Moreover, Saturn in Capricorn will manifest more of its favourable qualities than Saturn in Aquarius, since in the first case it will be the lord of the 1st and 2nd houses, and in the second — of the 1st and 12th houses. Saturn being in its own sign or in the sign of exaltation forms a shashi yoga, the characteristics of which will be the following: “Longevity, the ability to achieve much and to influence a large number of people. The name of this person will be inscribed on the pages of history. He will become a ruler, will covet the wealth of others and his character will be immoral” (“Brihat Jataka”, “Man-sagri”).
For rising Gemini, Virgo, Pisces and Sagittarius, Saturn will be in the sign of the lords of the 4th or 10th houses and, as the “Bhrigu Sutra” asserts, will give very favourable results. Referring to the “Uttara Kalamrita” (2.99), one may particularly single out the placement of Saturn in Libra and in the signs of Jupiter:
“If in the lagna there are malefic planets in the sign of their exaltation, which are moreover marakas (the lords of the 2nd, 7th and 8th houses), then there is no need to describe the amount of evil generated by them. Saturn gives wealth and prosperity when it is placed in the lagna in the signs of Pisces, Libra and Sagittarius. If under the above-mentioned circumstances the 7th kendra is not occupied or aspected by Jupiter or Mercury, the owner of the horoscope will become a ruler. His death must be predicted in the dasha or bhukti of the lord of the 7th house”.
The horoscope of the leader of the USSR, N. S. Khrushchev, is an example of a shashi yoga.
Other opinions concerning Saturn in the 1st house:
“Brihat Jataka” — poverty, sickliness, a difficult childhood, immorality, indistinct speech and untidiness. These characteristics will not manifest in the cases of Sagittarius, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Libra rising, when the owner of the horoscope will be like a king or will govern a city or a village. He will be handsome and learned.
“Phaladipika” — a person who has Saturn in the lagna in its own signs or in the sign of exaltation will be like a king or will become the head of a city. If Saturn is placed in any other sign, misfortunes during the period of childhood and poverty are expected.
“Saravali” — the same characteristics as those described by the “Phaladipika”.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — the master of the horoscope will own great property, will become prosperous, but greedy and narrow-minded. He will gain victory over enemies.
Note: Relying on practical experience, we recommend adhering to the views of the “Bhrigu Sutra”, the “Brihat Jataka” and the “Phaladipika”.

The results of the placement of Saturn (Shani) in the 1st house
If at the time of birth the son of Nalinisha (Surya), that is Shani, is in the Lagna in the Rashi of exaltation, the Mulatrikona—Rashi or its own Rashi, then the person will become the king of his country or city, but if he (Shani) is in any other Rashi, then the person will be unfortunate, ill and deprived of wealth.
Comments: If Shani [Saturn] in the Lagna is placed not in the Rashi [sign] of exaltation, of Mulatrikona or its own, but is in any other Rashi, then an illness is possible in that organ of the body which is represented by that Rashi. Thus if Shani is in the Rashi of Mesha [Aries], then the person often complains of a headache.
