Gemini (Mithuna)
Gemini — is a sign connected with the element of air, indicating an inconsistent but, to a certain extent, outstanding character. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the planet representing writers, scholars, teachers and other people engaged in the sphere of disseminating ideas and information. The symbols of the sign of Gemini — two twins, or a pair of lovers — indicate the interest of associating with such a person, or the presence in them of some very attractive peculiarity. By character they are active, restless; they love literature, astrology, the sciences, the arts and crafts.
They make good but, perhaps because of their quality of quickly changing their ideas and style of behaviour, unreliable friends. They love variety.
Outwardly they are usually tall and thin, dark-eyed, they have a large nose and curly hair. Their speech is pleasant, they are talkative and quick-witted. They can easily guess the thoughts and motives of others, but it is also easy to deceive them.
Usually they behave in a lively, cheerful way, they love singing, dancing, attending parties, games. They have quick, deft hands. The expression «jack of all trades, master of none» can at times be quite applicable to one born under this rising sign.
A «Gemini» person can make a good government official, manager, astrologer, employee. They have abilities for commercial activity, for work connected with figures and facts, and can quickly persuade others to do something.
They are not inclined to follow the chosen path persistently, and may try to do too many things at once. They require an occupation or a place where there is much variety, activity, where excitement reigns, where the mind is stirred. Usually they work indoors. «Gemini» people are freedom-loving, they dislike physical labour and burdensome family obligations.

Indubala — Gemini: Meditation on the symbol of the sign
Lagna in Mithuna, or the rising sign Gemini
GEMINI, or Mithuna — is the first sign of the airy triad (Gemini-Libra-Aquarius), where the element of air manifests itself as a striving for various connections, information, trade. The symbol of this sign is a pair of twin lovers holding hands. Gemini natives are talkative, curious, cheerful, hasty, attractive in appearance, sociable. Their mood is subject to fluctuations, they strive to manage everything, and therefore they are often superficial. This is a dual sign, which speaks of contradictions of nature, of dissipation and of the overstrain characteristic of them and an inclination to nervous disorders. They value intellectual communication, respect well-informed people, are shy, and adapt well to their surroundings. Gemini corresponds to the varna of vaishyas, merchants, and therefore they are fortunate in various enterprises where it is necessary to establish connections.
It is quite easy to recognise a person born under rising Gemini: they are always lively, cheerful, they love parties, singing, dancing, they have quick, deft hands. Gemini natives are inconstant, flighty, often superficial, they find it hard to bring what they have started to completion, they do not follow their obligations and dislike hard labour. In defence of this charming sign one may say that people with the lagna in Gemini simply love variety, their mind demands constant excitement. Therefore they can become good journalists, writers, scholars, teachers, and are successful in all spheres connected with the exchange of information. They make good poets, artists, people of art, of craft, government officials. They can persuade anyone to do anything, they are successful in commercial activity and in work connected with figures and facts. They are sociable, intelligent, shrewd, but they themselves can become the victim of deception. Gemini natives are good but unreliable friends. (Indubala)

- The Moon under the aspect of Jupiter or of an exalted Venus.
- Jupiter in the 2nd house, and the Moon in the 7th.
- Mercury and Saturn in the 9th house.
- The Moon in the 2nd or 12th assists the inheriting of real estate.
- The Moon and Jupiter in the 2nd house.

- Combinations for obtaining landed property:
1) Jupiter, Saturn and Mars in the Ascendant; 2) Mercury in the 10th and Jupiter in the 4th. - Mercury in the 7th and Venus in the 4th house foretell a financially advantageous marriage or partnership business.
- Mercury in the Lagna together with Jupiter and Saturn or under their aspects.
- Mercury in the 1st house, and the Moon, Jupiter and Mars in the 11th.
With Ascendants in dual signs all the kendras are ruled by benefic planets — Jupiter and Mercury. Taking into account the fact that these planets additionally acquire the statuses of Badhakesha and Maraka, they suffer most of all from Kendradhipati-dosha. Jupiter for the Lagna of Virgo and Gemini, and Mercury — for the Ascendant in Pisces and Sagittarius produce the effects of Kendradhipati, Badhaka and Maraka and become extremely dangerous. If they are badly placed, debilitated or deprived of strength (because of combustion, defeat in planetary war or poor Shadbala indices), the consequences can be fatal.
Some observations concerning the Ascendant in Gemini
- If Mercury resides in the company of the Sun in the 3rd house, then in its planetary period it gives excellent results.
- A person with the combination Venus—Mars—Moon in the 2nd house of the horoscope will set out on the path of money in the dasha of Venus.
- Mars in the 2nd house and Saturn with the Moon in the 8th give birth to an excellent Dhana-yoga, which is activated in the period of Mars.
- Saturn and Mars in the 2nd opposite the Moon in the 8th house send losses and privations in the periods of Mars and Saturn.
- The Sun works productively in the 3rd and 11th houses.
- Mercury feels comfortable in the 4th house, especially if Venus is next to it.
- Mars is well off only in the 11 th house. Here it defeats enemies and attains fame, status and wealth.
- When Saturn and Jupiter, ruling respectively the 9th and 10th houses, exchange signs, a magnificent Raja-yoga is formed.
- A conjunction of Mars and Venus gives unfavourable effects.
- A combination of Venus with Mercury in the 9th house works as a Raja-yoga.
- A meeting of Jupiter and Saturn in one sign does not create a Raja-yoga.
- If the rulers of the 9th and 10th are in any way connected with the lord of the 3rd house, the person's brothers and sisters will have a prosperous life.
- Saturn in debilitation does not bring any particular harm, however when it stands close to Jupiter, the Jupiterian ability to do good is reduced.

- When the lord of the 10th house occupies the 2nd house in the sign of Gemini, the person's professional activity will be incredibly profitable. They will be able to attain a high social status and a post in the government.
- Mars in the 7th house causes quarrels with the wife over money.
- A person with Mars in the 10th can make a career as a lawyer or a doctor.
- If the sign of Gemini is not in the best condition, and an unfavourable sign is in the 3rd house, by a Papakartari-yoga [the placement of unfavourable planets on both sides of a house/sign/planet — translator's note.] or by other similar factors, there is a risk of diseases of the throat or dysfunction of the thyroid gland. The influence of favourable planets on the sign of Gemini or on the 3rd house makes it possible to cure the illness.
- For Gemini Lagna Jupiter represents a real threat, since it acquires the status of Badhakesha, Maraka and bearer of Kendradhipati-dosha.

Nakshatras in the sign of Gemini
Three nakshatras will also exert their influence on the character and destiny of a person whose lagna or ascendant is in Gemini.
Thus, the nakshatra Mrigashira, located at 00°– 6°40′ of the constellation of Gemini, will endow the person with excellent oratorical gifts, but at the same time frivolity may appear in their character.
The nakshatra Ardra will give the person incredible will-power, but may endow them with greed and constant dissatisfaction.
Openness and an excellent intellect will appear in the character of a person whose ascendant or lagna is in Gemini and who is born under the nakshatra Punarvasu.

Lagna in Gemini. Gemini in Vedic astrology.
The symbol of Gemini, twin children, indicates that this constellation is the most dual of the four dual rashis. Since these twins are of male and female gender, those born under the constellation of Gemini have a tendency to combine in themselves masculine and feminine energies. Such a combination, however, does not assist in obtaining happiness through progeny, because Venus is at once the lady both of the 5th house (children) and of the 12th house (loss), which implies excessive expenses connected with children. On the other hand, such a connection between houses 5 and 12 gives additional opportunities in obtaining pleasures, since the 12th house is precisely what signifies pleasure, while the fifth is the house of play, and Venus — is itself the significator of pleasure. This combination in particular implies sexual pleasures, because the word «maithuna», one of the designations of sexual union in Sanskrit, is derived from «mithuna», that is «a pair», and this second word is the Sanskrit name of the constellation of Gemini.
Since all the kendra-bhavas (angular houses) with the lagna in Gemini fall into dual rashis, the possessors of this lagna often show a dual attitude with regard to various kinds of interpersonal connections and to their place of residence. This is manifested especially vividly with regard to career, since the lord of the lagna, the dual planet Mercury, is in the rashi of its fall in the tenth house (the house of profession). Gemini people often choose various kinds of art as their profession, because Venus, the lord of the creative 5th house and the significator of the arts, is exalted in the 10th house. Nevertheless they cannot achieve great success in this goal of life, since Venus is also the lady of the 12th house, the house of loss. Those born with the lagna in Gemini are very talkative — perhaps both because the Moon, with its extraordinary changeability, rules the 2nd house (speech), and because Mercury, which rules speech, is for them the ruler of the lagna. This circumstance is not always to the benefit of Gemini natives, since the Moon, as is known, is an enemy of Mercury.
Since Gemini is the third house — the house of intellect in the natural zodiac, and also because the Sun rules the third house with the lagna in Gemini, persons born with this lagna are very inclined to rely on their intellect, especially considering that Mercury is also the planet of intellect. This confidence of theirs, however, is capable of creating difficulties for those among Gemini natives who intend to follow the spiritual path, all the more so since Saturn, the lord of the 9th house (the house of spirituality), is by its nature a materialistic graha, and here it turns out, moreover, to be the lord of the 8th house, the house of negation with respect to the 9th. This tendency is aggravated by the fact that Mercury is an enemy of Jupiter, the natural significator of spirituality. In those cases when Gemini natives choose the spiritual path for themselves, most often they give preference to philosophy over religious ritual, for the former is incomparably closer to them than the latter.
As a rule, Gemini people do not have the best health, because Mercury is an enemy of Mars. And Mars, being for them the lord of the 6th and 11th houses (the 11th house = the 6th from the 6th) and at the same time the significator of the 6th house, is thereby triply predisposed to cause various illnesses in Gemini natives. Besides, this situation may indicate ill health of friends, elder brothers or sisters (the 11th house, ruled by Mars).
Robert Svoboda
Gemini — is the positive sign of Mercury, the mutable (dual) sign of air, the shoulders and arms of the Cosmic Man (the Universal Form of the Supreme Lord — personified time). Their symbol is two twins or a married couple. As sign number three they indicate energy, a striving for change and interchange, for movement and new inventions.
People in whose horoscope Gemini occupies a dominant position are nervous, restless and eternally agitated. Their body and mind are mobile, flexible and adaptable, however these people are inclined to exhaust themselves to the limit with excessive activity. They are gifted with excellent mental abilities and brilliant eloquence; they have a splendid command of language, thanks to which they become good writers, journalists, poets, secretaries and programmers. Gemini natives show themselves well in work with information and statistical data and can successfully engage in scientific research work. Then again, they are also inclined to theorising. Sometimes Gemini natives get carried away by the very process of chasing after some idea, and sometimes they get lost in groundless fantasies or anxieties.
In their relations with people Gemini natives are no less mobile. Than in intellectual work. Usually Gemini natives enter into marriage several times in the course of their life or maintain relations with several partners simultaneously. However they would do well not to get excessively carried away with sex, since their reserve of vital forces is not as rich as their imagination. Gemini natives love novelty and a change of impressions; they can easily become addicted to the television or the computer. They like everything that excites the nervous system or allows them to race through life still faster, but danger lurks here, since excessive stimulation can make them too irritable and even bring them to neurosis. And the dexterity and cunning of Gemini natives sometimes turn into mendacity and unreliability.
People of this type can be indecisive and incapable of bringing matters to completion. Gemini — is the most changeable and mobile of all the signs of the Zodiac. They race forward until they are worn out. If from the chase after worldly knowledge and sensory impressions they turn to the search for inner knowledge, then they will be able to attain a high level of spirituality, for of all the signs it is precisely Gemini that possesses the subtlest and most airy energy.

RESULTS OF BIRTH IN MITHUNA LAGNA [Gemini]
«Jataka-Bharanam» 13:3. A person born in Mithuna Lagna is voluptuous, generous, they have many sons and friends, they are a philosopher, rich, possess a pleasant character (behaviour) and live near the king.
Commentary: This is a Rashi [sign] of dual nature. It is ruled by the Graha Budha [the planet Mercury]. This is an airy sign (Vayu-Rashi), since its primary element is air. A person born with Mithuna Lagna is changeable (unstable), performs their work quickly, obtains favourable things, does not feel complete satisfaction, is brisk and energetic. Since Mithuna is a Rashi of dual nature, the person has duality in their character. At moments of taking a decision they become the victim of conflict in the mind (a clash of opposites, of contradictions at the level of the intellect). They do not need time to change their point of view. Mithuna is the Rashi of Budha, the Karaka of intellect, and therefore the person possesses precision at the intellectual level. They succeed in intellectual achievements, are talented, but they are hard to understand. They are rich in talents. People born under Mithuna Lagna achieve success where a sharp intellect and reason are required. They are excessively sensitive and their character is inconstant. Because of the manifestation of sudden changes in their character they seem capricious. They are endowed with a strange and unique practicality, a sense of hospitality, magnanimity and progressive ideas. People with Mithuna Lagna are never satisfied with their progress (achievements). Owing to their excessive enthusiasm for variety it is very difficult for them to occupy themselves with one thing for a long time. This tendency prevents them from attaining the highest level in their field of action. Owing to the restlessness (anxiety) and changeability of the mind such people are subject to nervous illnesses. The author of Mān-Sāgri writes: A person born in Mithuna Lagna is sensual (voluptuous), loves their close ones, is very compassionate, rich, skilful, honoured with knowledge of the essence of things, devoted to Yoga/Meditation, extremely handsome, but subject to illnesses. According to the author of Mān-Sāgri a person born in Mithuna-Lagna is proud of themselves, loves their close ones, they are a hermit, voluptuous (enjoys sensual pleasures), rich, lustful (passionate), lazy and destroys their enemies.
