Mars in the 1st house
The results given by Mars in the first house of the horoscope
In the 1st house Mars makes the person brisk and resolute, educated and wealthy. Here Mars takes the person under its power. This is an active, stubborn, quick and quick-tempered person. If he has decided to do some work, he will do it, overcoming all obstacles. It is difficult to stop him. He loves to argue, and to have everything as he considers necessary. He thinks that he has the right path, and others the wrong one. He will get angry quickly and often lashes out at people. It is difficult for him to build normal relationships because of his desire to be the chief. Therefore such a placement is considered unfavourable for marriage. If Mars is alone and receives no aspects, these characteristics can almost always be observed. These indications are strengthened if Mars is under the aspect of Rahu or the Sun. If Mars is together with Ketu or Saturn, the person may not be so active and quick-tempered. If Mars is with Jupiter, it will direct its energy into a favourable channel. It will be the same if Mars is under the aspect of Jupiter. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)
Mars (Mangala) in the 1st house
Mars in the 1st house. Energy, activity, an inclination towards competition and arguments, a love of sport, problems in family life, several marriages. People with such a position of Mars are ambitious and use any means to attain their goal. Luck accompanies them in acquiring real estate; they are brave and independent, often suffer from fire and accidents, and are versed in mechanics. (Indubala)
Mars in the 1st house: full of energy, recovers quickly, comes out of critical situations with an imperturbable expression on his face, is not afraid to take risks, readily answers a challenge thrown down, takes rash decisions, travels and wanders about the world, makes a mountain out of a molehill, egocentric. He is keen on games of chance and sensual pleasures, looks young, a manglik (i.e. a person in whose life and appearance the manifestations of Mars are strong, including Kuja dosha). Conjunctions of Mars with other planets in the Lagna cause the following ailments: conjunction with the Sun — high temperature; with the Moon — boils, bleeding; with Mercury — dysentery, nervousness; with Jupiter — fractures, accidents; with Venus — venereal diseases; with Saturn — falls, bruises. Mars in a dual sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) in the Lagna, the 4th or the 10th house grants prosperity during its dasha. A person with Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 10th or 11th house skilfully manages the finances of hospitals, police stations, security firms and industrial enterprises. He also receives support from relatives. (Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)
“Bhrigu Sutra” 3.1-9
If Mars is in the 1st house, the owner of the horoscope will have marks from wounds on his body or marks left from abscesses or burns. He will be of robust build with reddish hands and a deep navel. An inclination towards theft will manifest in him. A person with such a position of Mars in the horoscope will be cruel, strong, stupid, hardy, wealthy, will have a changeable character and will suffer from unusual illnesses. If Mars is in its own signs or is exalted, the owner of the horoscope will be healthy and will possess a robust constitution. He will receive honours from the government and have a good reputation. His life will be long. If Mars is in conjunction with an inimical planet, the owner of the horoscope will live a short life, will have few children and an unattractive (possibly even ugly) appearance, and will suffer from rheumatism. A person who has Mars exalted in the 1st house will become wealthy and will love sightseeing. If Mars is conjunct with or aspected by a malefic planet, or is in an inimical sign, the owner of the horoscope will have diseases of the eyes.
Comments:
Mars is a ruinous planet, of an aggressive and passionate character. The 1st house is responsible for the appearance, therefore Mars may spoil the appearance of the owner of the horoscope with scars. Mars in the 1st house gives great strength to the feelings, impulsiveness and hot-headedness. It is very difficult for the owner of such a position of Mars in the horoscope to control his feelings. When he loses his temper, he forgets what is bad and what is good, therefore the ancient sage characterises the owner of the horoscope as “strong and stupid”.
All the positive consequences of the placement of Mars in one of its own signs or its sign of exaltation (Aries, Scorpio and Capricorn) are especially noted: wealth, honours, robust health, a good reputation and a high education. When it is placed in these signs and in the 1st house, ruchaka yoga is formed, one of the pancha mahapurusha yogas, the results of which are described by Professor B.V. Raman, a luminary of modern Vedic astrology, in his book “Three Hundred Important Combinations” as follows: “a person born in ruchaka will be quite energetic, famous, endowed with a robust build and will have a red complexion (a bright flush). This person will have a generous character, will live a long life, will possibly become the head of an army and will honour customs and traditions”.
Being in the 1st house, Mars influences the 7th house, the house of marriage, and creates problems in family life, bringing disputes and frequent conflicts. Since Mars is the indicator of property and brothers, from its placement in a sign one may also judge these spheres of the person’s life. For example, the placement of Mars in Taurus in the 1st house will give very moderate property and problems with brothers. Mars is the significator of the 10th house, therefore the placement of Mars in the 1st house — the house of the personality — will make the owner of the horoscope ambitious, capable of anything for the sake of attaining his aims.
Other opinions concerning Mars in the 1st house:
“Brihat Jataka” — damage to a limb.
“Phaladipika” — the owner of the horoscope will be very cruel and bold. He will have a short life and wounds on his body.
“Saravali” — a person who has Mars in the 1st house of the horoscope will be cruel, bold, stupid, proud, handsome and will possess an unstable mind.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — iron objects and fire will be a source of danger for the life of the owner of the horoscope. He will be in constant anxiety and will possibly endure the loss of his wife or children. However brave and bold he may be, he will have to face the evil consequences of his actions.
Note: All the authors describe unfavourable results of the placement of Mars in the 1st house, without touching on the positive points, when Mars becomes a functionally benefic planet thanks to ruchaka yoga or when Mars is the lord of good houses. For example, for Cancer and Leo ascendants, Mars is the lord of the 5th and 10th houses and of the 1st and 9th houses respectively. It is the yoga karaka (planet of strength), and its presence in the 1st house extraordinarily strengthens the possibilities of the owner of the horoscope. Mars will also be considerably benefic with the signs of Sagittarius and Pisces rising.

THE RESULTS OF THE PLACEMENT OF MANGALA IN THE LAGNA (OR IN THE 1ST BHAVA)
If Mangala is placed in the Lagna, then the person has hallucinations, on his body there are signs of wounds, he is very bold, an extremist (an adherent of extreme views) and is inclined towards wandering (travelling).
Comments: If Mangala [Mars], being in the Lagna, is under ruinous influences, then of course there will be marks from wounds on the person’s body or a rash is possible, since Mangala, being the Karaka [significator] of wounds and injuries, possessing the nature of Fire (‘Agni’) and being in the Tanu Bhava [the house of the Body], will entirely naturally give such diseases. Mangala is also the Karaka of bravery and cruelty (strength), and the Lagna Bhava is the house of the inclinations of the mind, the character and the habits of the person. Therefore as a consequence of the combination of these Karakatvas [characteristics] there will be anger, enthusiasm (liveliness, quickness) and bravery in the person’s character.
Mangala, placed in the Lagna, gives a danger of injuries (wounds) from fire or weapons. This placement of Mangala is regarded as unfavourable for the health of the person’s wife. In order to achieve success in any work, the person is forced to work hard and much.
