Mercury in the 10th house

The results given by Mercury in the tenth house of the horoscope

Mercury in the tenth house: This is the house of work, recognition and fame. Here Mercury gives excellent results. The person will be very intelligent, strong, handsome, successful and noble. Such a person has knowledge in many fields. He receives knowledge right into old age. All undertakings will bring him success, he will be very well known. He will have much real estate and a happy family. He will often change his place of residence. This may be a teacher, a writer, a journalist, an astrologer, a mathematician, an agent and so on. Einstein had Mercury in the 10th house. A benefic planet in the 10th house gives Amala yoga, which will bring the person well-being, great fame and reputation. If Mercury is in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house in Gemini or Virgo, the person will have Bhadra yoga, which also gives very favourable results.

Retrograde Mercury in the 10th house: In a past life he was indecisive, lazy, irresponsible and negligent in relation to work, and he was unable to win the hearts of his superiors and to receive respect and career growth. He was unable to obtain success in any sphere he chose. Perhaps he worked in the civil service and abused his official position. In this life he will be able to achieve success if he works responsibly in subordination to his management. This is a good placement for business. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)

“Bhrigu Sutra” 4.67-70

If Mercury is in the 10th house, the owner of the horoscope will achieve success thanks to the performance of good deeds. He will be patient, possess wide fame and a good reputation, and will also become a great thinker or philosopher. In the 28th year of his life he will suffer from eye diseases. If Mercury is in its own sign or in the sign of exaltation, or in conjunction with Jupiter, the owner of the horoscope will perform many kinds of religious rituals. When Mercury is placed in the house of its enemy or is joined with an inauspicious planet, the master of the horoscope will be foolish and will commit impious acts.

Comments:

A position in a kendra is favourable for Mercury, except for a position in the signs hostile to it — Cancer, Aries and Scorpio. If Mercury is placed in Gemini or in Virgo, a beneficial bhadra yoga arises, the results of which have already been described. Besides, when Mercury is in Gemini, it is the lord of the 1st and 10th houses; if Mercury is in Virgo, then it is the lord of the 7th and 10th houses. These are very favourable positions, creating a raja yoga. A raja yoga is also formed in the case of Capricorn rising, Mercury being placed in Libra as the lord of the 9th in the 10th house, and it brings the owner of the horoscope fame and popularity.

And finally, dhana yogas, the yogas of wealth and prosperity, arise with Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces rising. Mercury, as a benefic planet, occupying the 10th house from the ascendant, creates amala yoga, the results of which are the following: “The owner of the horoscope will attain loud and lasting fame, a good reputation. His character will be irreproachable, and he will be fortunate and well-to-do”.

The horoscope of my spiritual master, His Divine Grace Tridandi Swami B. S. Govinda Maharaj, a great saint bearing pure love for God, illustrates the excellent position of Mercury in the 10th house of the horoscope.

Other opinions concerning Mercury in the 10th house:

“Brihat Jataka” — happiness and might.

“Phaladipika” — success, happiness, might, good deeds, a good education and a strong mind.

“Saravali” — the owner of the horoscope will be very intelligent, virtuous, fortunate, educated, tolerant and mighty. He will be rewarded with many honours.

“Chamatkar Chintamani” — a person with such a placement of Mercury in the horoscope will receive the father's property. Great honour, respect and power await him. He will speak little, but do much.

Note: All the authorities emphasise that the position of Mercury in the 10th house is one of the best in the horoscope. The assertion
of the “Chamatkar Chintamani” concerning the father's property is entirely just (the 10th house is the second from the 9th, the house of the father).

The results of the placement of Mercury (Buddha) in the 10th house

Buddha, placed in the 10th Bhava, makes the person very educated and knowledgeable; he performs noble deeds, possesses all kinds of wealth and property, attains fame with the help of the king, speaks sweetly and is sensual (loves pleasures).

Comments: The position of Buddha [Mercury] in the 10th Bhava [house] is considered very favourable by all authors on Jyotish. A person in whose birth chart Buddha is placed in the 10th Bhava earns wealth by means of teaching, art, craft, music, work concerning the courts, writing, poetry (the composition of poems) and so on. It has been noticed that with the position of Buddha in this Bhava the person, as a rule, receives profit not by one means, but by various ones. All the authors speak of the results of Mercury in the 10th house as favourable and beneficial: such a person will receive the father's wealth in great measure, he is prudent (tactful), possesses royal power and receives special respect in society; he is calculating in conversation, handsome and happy, possesses an excellent intellect, patience, spirituality, a sattvic cast of mind, accepts pleasures (enjoyments), and is sincere and honest in his goals and intentions.
