Rahu and Ketu are known as aprakasha, the shadow planets. Therefore the classical texts give no description of the placement of these planets in the signs of the zodiac. Since their nature is shadowy, Rahu and Ketu often take on the properties of the lords of the sign in which they are placed. In doing so one must look at how the lord of the sign in which Rahu and Ketu are placed is himself placed. If he is strong, then the possibilities of the shadow planets will also be great, and vice versa. (Indubala)
The karmic task with Rahu placed in Cancer — Ketu in Capricorn
Ketu in the sign of material perfection points to a past life spent in attaining the following goals: career, social status, organisation, pragmatism, purposeful efforts, practical experience, the attainment of recognition.
Such people display high practicality and strive to take responsibility upon themselves from the earliest age. They approach affairs very thoroughly and cautiously and do not like haste. However, on the whole their attitude to life is somewhat pessimistic. They are highly conservative and assimilate new ideas with difficulty. Their outward appearance is somewhat severe and they are inclined to hide their emotions. However, if such personalities are sufficiently developed, this placement gives them a perfect understanding of the cosmic laws. They understand the nature of this world and perform their karma without attachment, not trying to avoid their prescribed duties.
For inwardly less developed personalities this placement means inveterate materialism, heightened ambition and a great need to be in the thick of events.
However, the placement of Rahu in Cancer pushes them in this life into another sphere — everyday life, family, material relationships, real estate, aesthetics, intuition, the development of psychic abilities, the development of subtle emotions, inner tranquillity. This means that such a person's task is to find peace within himself rather than in the external environment. They need to learn to respect their own emotions and to develop inner gentleness. It has been observed that in the second half of life such people become very caring, compassionate and sensitive to subtle emotions. In order to prosper in a career, such individuals need to choose a gentle and humane approach to people. The transformation they need to pass through may be compared to the turning of stone into water. It is obvious that this does not happen so easily, and great sacrifices are required for it. The life of such people is full of inner and outer struggle. Sometimes such a struggle may break a person inwardly, and sometimes a true humanist emerges from him. Since both Cancer and Capricorn are conservative signs, this placement of Rahu-Ketu makes the person very suspicious and sceptical.
Ketu feels bad in Capricorn and cannot give prosperity in its own period, except in those cases where Saturn is well placed in the chart from a material point of view.
In Parashara's opinion Rahu in Cancer somewhat resembles Ketu in Leo and may give good fruits.
The placement of Saturn points to past talents, and the placement of the Moon points to the sphere of potential possibilities in this life.
Examples: Mahatma Gandhi, the fighter for the independence of India, has this placement in the 4th and 10th houses. Although he was a true humanist, he nevertheless displayed extreme conservatism. He was a brilliant popular leader (the 10th house) and his leadership and popularity were based on his humanistic qualities (the 4th house). The Moon in the 10th house gave him a high social status.
Another example: Jim Morrison represents the other side of this conjunction. He was quite unconservative, and his whole life was a protest against the artificial values of an egoistic society built now on the qualities of practical and pragmatic Capricorn.
Rahu in Cancer and Ketu in Capricorn: Ketu in Capricorn shows that in a past life the person strove strongly for career growth and for obtaining recognition in society. In doing so he ignored his obligations towards those close to him. Rahu in Cancer shows that the person must put his ambitions connected with a career into the background and give more attention to his family. Cancer is the 4th house of the natural zodiac. This place is responsible for the heart, the emotions, the home, cosiness, happiness, comfort of soul, the mother, the upbringing of children. Rahu makes the person work more on these factors.
