The Moon in the 8th house
The results given by the Moon in the eighth house of the horoscope
Chandra (the Moon) in the 8th house
The Moon in the 8th house. Illnesses in childhood, a youth marked by loneliness and worries, separation from the father, good restorative powers of the organism. An average life span, diseases of the eyes are possible, the receipt of an inheritance (Indubala)
The Moon in the eighth house: The Moon here gives material benefit from the partner, but shortens the life of the spouse or of the mother. (Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)
The Moon in the 8th house: It is very bad to have the Moon in the 8th house. This is the worst placement for the Moon. The 9th house is well-being. The 12th house shows losses. The 12th from the 9th house = the 8th house. This is the loss of well-being. Here the Moon gives a difficult life and poor health. They may suffer from water. A damaged Moon in the 8th house gives an early death. This is a very well-known fact. Of course, one must also look at how the rulers of the 1st and 8th houses are placed. In order to have a stable life, one must have a favourable 8th house. The Moon does not give stability. A happy life is possible only when the other planets are strongly placed. When the dasha period of the Moon begins, the person will have great troubles. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)
“Bhrigu Sutra” — ka-gha
The owner of the horoscope will have few means of transport. Watery places — ponds, reservoirs, wells — will be dangerous for his life. If the Moon occupies the 8th house, the owner of the horoscope will renounce his relatives because of his wife (or a woman). With an exalted Moon or one in its own sign, a long life is destined for the owner of the horoscope. A waning Moon speaks of an average life span.
Comments:
For reasons unknown to us the sutras describing the characteristics of the placement of the Moon in the 8th house are designated not by numbers, as usual, but by letters.
The 8th house is one of the most unfavourable houses in the horoscope, since it is the twelfth (losses and deprivations) counting from the 9th, the house of fortune and prosperity. Planets lose all their good properties when they fall into this house. A waning Moon, weakened by its placement in a dusthana, says that the owner of the horoscope will not be very intelligent, since the Moon is the manas karaka, and that in the periods of childhood and youth (the age ruled by the Moon) he will experience loneliness and mental suffering. A waxing or full Moon may bring an inheritance to the owner of the horoscope. The 8th house is an indicator of accidents, and the Moon is a watery planet, therefore danger from water threatens the owner of the horoscope.
The separation from the marriage partner which Bhrigu Muni mentions may be explained by the fact that the 8th house is the second (the house of death) for the 7th house. From the character of the Moon one may judge the length of life, but in order to draw final conclusions one must also take into account the strength and placement of the lords of the 8th and 1st
houses, and also of Saturn, as the ayush karaka — the indicator of longevity. The placement of the Moon in the 8th house of the horoscope is regarded as one of the strongest negative combinations, or arishta yoga, but its ruinous effect is neutralised if the person’s birth took place in the daytime with a waning Moon or at night with a waxing Moon. In these cases the Moon in the 8th house becomes one of the factors protecting the owner of the horoscope from all negative influences.
Besides this, the Moon in the 8th house gives an inclination towards mysticism and magical abilities, and also the ability to foresee. The horoscope of the Russian mystic Daniil Andreev illustrates the extraordinary possibilities of a full Moon in the 8th house.
Other opinions concerning the Moon (Chandra) in the 8th house:
“Brihat Jataka” — the owner of the horoscope will be sickly and will have an inconstant and restless mind.
“Phaladipika” — a short life, sufferings and illnesses await a person if the Moon in his horoscope is placed in the 8th house.
“Saravali” — the owner of the horoscope will become intelligent and celebrated, but sickly and weak. His life will be short.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — the owner of the horoscope will constantly be surrounded by doctors because of numerous illnesses. He will endure suffering because of terrible calamities, misfortunes and adversities.
Note: All the treatises except the “Saravali” speak of negative characteristics of the placement of the Moon in the 8th house. The intelligence and fame which the “Saravali” mentions may be expected in the cases where the Moon is in the signs of Cancer and Taurus, and also with a conjunction with Jupiter or other favourable planets.

THE RESULTS OF THE PLACEMENT OF CHANDRA IN THE 8TH BHAVA
A person whose Chandra is in the 8th Bhava has a body decaying because of many illnesses. He will be extremely poor, will receive troubles from enemies and from the king (the government) and anxiety in the mind and in the heart.
Comments: If a weak Chandra is in the 8th Bhava, the person will have a short life. Besides this, he will also suffer from many illnesses. This combination belongs to those causing misfortune. There is a danger of an accident involving a means of transport. He may die from falling into a well or from a similar death. For a person in whose birth chart Chandra, being the ruler of the Lagna, is weak and is subjected to the influence of malefic Grahas in the 8th Bhava, the above-mentioned danger is more pronounced. Chandra in the 8th Bhava awakens the person’s curiosity about the mystical sciences (astrology, philosophy, Tantra or the like). A weak Chandra in this Bhava is the cause of the person becoming involved in disputes <court cases> over the mother’s will. Chandra will also give the person a change of place of residence. Chandra in the 8th Bhava also causes a feeling of disappointment, nervous illnesses, anxiety, conflicts in the mind, psychological problems, malarial fever, diseases of the eyes and fits (fainting).
