Ashlesha Nakshatra

Date 19 Jan 2023
Ashlesha Nakshatra

The nakshatra Ashlesha (9th of the 27 nakshatras, 16°40′ — 30°00′ of Cancer).

«Those who have the Moon in Ashlesha treat the labours of others with contempt, are undiscriminating in food, sinful, ungrateful and masterfully lead people by the nose» (Varahamihira).

General indications: the symbol of Ashlesha is a coiled serpent, and its supreme deity is the Sarpas, the deified serpent. Ashlesha is responsible for everything connected with serpents.

Indians picture serpents as cunning, crawling creatures which, before strangling their victim with their coils, hypnotise it with their bodily movements and their gaze. Serpents, which lead a secretive way of life and are often the object of false rumours, love to disguise their actions. For their insincerity, greed, mendacity, cold-bloodedness, and also for their painful, poisoning bites they have become a byword. They are also credited with considerable wisdom, cunning, shrewdness, hypnosis, and also primordial energy and power, especially sexual energy. Thus Ashlesha signifies entanglement, being bound, torment, lies, secret sexual relations, unbearable pain and other archetypally serpentine manifestations, as well as shrewdness and wisdom. Shrewdness leads to holistic awareness, but this awareness often causes misunderstandings, painful ruptures and other serious troubles in life.

The lagna or the Moon in Ashlesha often signify a coarse character which, when afflicted by other factors, may provoke the hatred of those around them. The boxer Muhammad Ali, a man of tough temper who hypnotised his opponents and fans and enraged those who envied him, was born with rising Ashlesha. The former president Lyndon Johnson, also born with the ascendant in Ashlesha, fully displayed its deep-seated cunning.

Ashlesha may exert an undermining effect on the characteristics of some planets which are in it. The Moon in the horoscope of Mahatma Gandhi, being the lord of the 10th house of career, was in Ashlesha, and his career several times went to rack and ruin. One of the unique properties of Ashlesha is that it brings favourable results if it is occupied by Ketu aspected by Jupiter.

Physiology and diseases: the joints and the nails; the ears.

Professions, people and places of habitation: people who deal with poisons: chemical engineers, pharmacists, drug dealers. Those who deal with reptiles: zoologists and those who keep snakes at home. Robbers and thugs. Behind-the-scenes manipulators. Greedy, cunning, miserly politicians and businessmen. Traders in pornography, prostitutes and brothel keepers. Polemical, shrewd people. Primordial energy.

«Chaturvarga-chintamani» (Hemadri).

The key concept of the nakshatra Ashlesha

The removal of obstacles, in order to live without restrictions.

The energy which Ashlesha possesses is the most difficult to control and handle, especially in the present age. Even the ancient sages and scholars said few kind words with regard to this nakshatra. Ashlesha is a source of effects and events diametrically opposite in their essence, which are hard to foresee. On the one hand, people under the influence of this nakshatra are inclined to philosophy, deep reflection, asceticism, solitude, hermitage, and on the other hand — they display coarseness and egoism in their behaviour, speak maliciously, tolerate humiliation in no form whatever, and use their shrewdness to exploit others.

The predominance of the energy of Ashlesha makes society a cradle of fear and suspicion. The nakshatra thinks approximately thus: «Lock the doors and do not trust your neighbour». Ashlesha natives have a tendency to conceal their true thoughts and feelings, are inclined to anxiety, and are cautious. They do not create warm, intimate relations with other people and do not trust even the members of their family and their close ones. At the same time they will defend their own relatives and fight with potential enemies quite mercilessly.

Ashlesha natives use politeness as an instrument for attaining a goal. As soon as the task is accomplished, they immediately become cold and merciless. For them an ascent up the social ladder at the cost of intrigues and conspiracies is possible, but since they act on a superficial level, it is not so hard to notice their tricks.

Ashlesha natives are stingy, on account of which they often suffer losses. Many become the victims of deception, especially those who have the Sun and Jupiter in the nakshatra under consideration.

Ashlesha natives are gluttons. They cannot endure the feeling of hunger, they are thrifty, and dislike throwing anything away. They feel at home in bars, restaurants and similar places. They are predisposed to various intoxications, and do not object to pharmaceutical preparations, allopathy, antibiotics and so on.

Those born under Ashlesha may engage in entrepreneurial activity which borders on fraud. They often use dishonest methods in business and resort to swindling — for them this is an entertaining game bringing joy.

They are wise and cold-blooded, ready to use their knowledge against opponents. At first glance they seem passive, and all because their activity has a secretive character. They are constantly thinking something over. They are able to take decisions quickly and clearly even in difficult situations. Thanks to a flexible psyche they adapt easily to new conditions. They may change profession several times. They often become leaders. They strive to be the best at what they do.

Ashlesha possesses an enormous potential of intellectual development, providing the possibility of changing an established world-view. And moreover the transformation occurs in the most unexpected way, and the person finds themselves in completely different conditions of existence.

The individuality of Ashlesha can be understood if one reflects on the peculiarities of the cat and the serpent. Cunning, calculation, distrustfulness, indifference — these are their common features. The only way to use these negative qualities correctly is to bring the individual will into complete accord with the will of the Universe. The main thing is to overcome innate egoism, after which suspiciousness will turn into foresight, and cunning — into wisdom. Such is the first step on the path to spiritual awakening.

Here the influence of intellect and emotions can be traced. Mars is debilitated in Ashlesha, loses its qualities, and actions without reflection may lead to difficult consequences. The Moon in Ashlesha speaks of a strong influence of karma in this incarnation; these people are originally predisposed to certain events and cannot avoid them. Lies, manipulation — these are the qualities which may manifest in people with a strong manifestation of this nakshatra. They tolerate humiliation in no manifestation whatever, and they may have difficulties with nutrition.

«The Moon in Ashlesha gives a contemptuous attitude to the labour of others, indiscriminateness in food, unrighteousness, ingratitude and an ability masterfully to lead people by the nose». (Varahamihira).

Ashlesha men

They look somewhat coarse and sturdy, though most often this is only an appearance.

They are unable to feel compassion and sincerity, but they know how to portray them. Their inherent talkativeness allows them to adapt quite well in any society and to conceal their true intentions. Innate leadership qualities, ambition, independence, luck and popularity can help them reach the top of their field, especially in politics and management.

Their character may display such negative qualities as envy, ingratitude, and an inability to trust people. They often associate with marginals; a person’s social status and moral principles are a matter of indifference to them. They are unable to tell manipulators from those who really need help.

If Saturn aspects the Moon in the chart of an Ashlesha man, this gives him the opportunity to find fulfilment in the sphere of power supply, military and police work. At the same time they achieve success quickly and lose it just as quickly.

Being the eldest in the family, they take on responsibility for their relatives. Unfortunately, they rarely receive support from them in return. Most often they have no mutual understanding with the wife and quarrel with her over money and her relatives.

Health is average — they are troubled by pain in the legs and knees, there may be dependence on medicines, problems with the gastrointestinal tract and jaundice.

Ashlesha women

Sometimes they have a beautiful figure, but most often their appearance is not very attractive.

They are characterised by an indifferent attitude to life, they have no desire to look after anyone and often let things drift. At the same time they are moral and modest, and enjoy well-deserved respect in the family. They come out victorious from verbal duels.

They work well in an office as administrators.

Excellent housewives. They should keep their distance from the husband’s relatives, since those can contribute to creating an unfavourable atmosphere in the family and to a break-up with the husband.

Joint diseases are characteristic, as well as nervous breakdowns and hysterics arising against their background, and problems with the gastrointestinal tract.

The padas (quarters) of the nakshatra Ashlesha

The 1st pada of the nakshatra Ashlesha  (16°40′ — 20°00′ of Cancer) falls into the navamsha of Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter. This is the pada of wealth and fame. It gives intelligence, generosity and happiness.

The 2nd pada of the nakshatra Ashlesha (20°00′ — 23°20′ of Cancer) falls into the navamsha of Capricorn, ruled by Saturn. A very ambitious pada, which pushes one towards deceit in order to achieve the desired result. Those born under this quarter can be cruel, foolish and sickly; they need to be urged on and encouraged when performing any work.

The 3rd pada of the nakshatra Ashlesha (23°20′ — 26°40′ of Cancer) falls into the navamsha of Aquarius, ruled by Saturn. The key word of this pada is secrecy, and planets placed in it have an unfavourable effect on the mother’s well-being. The native may be sluggish and irritable, but at the same time possess good scientific knowledge.

The 4th pada of the nakshatra Ashlesha (26°40′ — 30°00′ of Cancer) falls into the navamsha of Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. This quarter relates to all kinds of illusions and moral struggle, it forces one to conceal one’s true nature, and makes a person passionate, temperamental and attached to sexual pleasures. Planets located here have an unfavourable effect on the father’s well-being.

The ruling planet of the nakshatra Ashlesha

Two planets are connected with Ashlesha — the Moon and Mercury. Mercury, the chief ruler of the nakshatra, passes on to it such negative traits of its own as inconstancy, evasiveness and mendacity. Ashlesha often uses Mercury’s quickness, receptivity and calculation to achieve selfish goals. Especially in our days.

Ashlesha is the place where the intellect is perfected in order to control and direct the hidden, instinctive side of the mind. In the modern world, however, Mercury’s ability to guide the Moon is used to deceive society through the mass media. That is why Ashlesha is the most dangerous nakshatra of Kali Yuga. It is a battlefield between intellect and emotions, consciousness and the subconscious. Alas, because of its restless and turbulent nature, Ashlesha is inclined towards decadence and the choice of a false path.

A conjunction of the Moon with Mercury in the horoscope brings results similar to those given by Ashlesha. It is considered that only Ketu aspected by Jupiter gives truly favourable results in it. A well-placed Mercury can make a person a shrewd manipulative entrepreneur.

Its symbol is a coiled snake, which speaks of antisocial behaviour, a difficult character, unpredictable behaviour, an outstanding mind and an inclination towards asceticism. The presiding deity is the serpent Sharpa. The name of the nakshatra is translated as «the embracing one». Even the gaze of people under the influence of Ashlesha possesses a mystical, attracting power.

Ancient texts mention that birth in the 2nd quarter of Ashlesha will bring loss of prosperity; in the 3rd quarter it speaks of danger for the mother of the horoscope’s owner, and in the 4th quarter of danger for the father and for the owner of the horoscope himself in childhood before the age of 8.

The 1st quarter, 16° 40’ — 20°00’ of Cancer
A man in whose horoscope Ketu is placed in this quarter will work in the defence industry, while a woman with such a horoscope will become a nurse. If Jupiter is placed in Shravana, she will become a doctor or a chemist.

The 2nd quarter, 20°00’ — 23° 20’ of Cancer
Boldness, religiousness. The cause of many misfortunes is the father of the horoscope’s owner, who may leave the family. However, the owner of the horoscope will attain material well-being and will provide for his mother’s old age.

The 3rd quarter, 23° 20’ — 26° 40’ of Cancer
This is a fortunate position for Ketu, which speaks of a good and well-rounded education, travels and wealth.

Ashlesha is called Hydra in the Western system. The Hydra is a female water serpent-like creature.

The symbol of this star is a snake coiled into a ring, and the living beings represented by this nakshatra are a whole planetary system — Naga Loka. These are very highly developed beings. And it is said in the Mahabharata that earthly kings even took representatives of this civilisation as their wives.

The deity of this nakshatra is Ahi (Sharpa). The name of the nakshatra is translated as «the embracing one».

The deep motivation of these people is Dharma — the fulfilment of duty, obligations and religious principles.

Ashlesha in addition represents Kundalini, or the fiery serpent, which is located at the base of the spine of each of us — psychic or sexual energy. And when this energy is activated, it can endow a person with mystical abilities and give them the opportunity to attain spiritual enlightenment.

Ashlesha people may have such a piercing, penetrating, hypnotising gaze of a python, which has the ability to penetrate into the souls of other people.

This serpent is a symbol of divine wisdom, creative power, the power of reproduction, sexuality, and also of the energy of danger, misfortune, suffering and sudden attack.

The shakti, or energy, with which Ashlesha endows those in its charge is the ability to act with a potent poison, to paralyse one’s enemy with a hypnotic gaze.

Ashlesha means entanglement, bondage, torment, falsehood, secret sexual liaisons, unbearable pain and other archetypally serpentine manifestations, and also insight and wisdom.

Ashlesha is ruled by the planet Mercury, and since it is located in the sign of Cancer it also falls under the influence of the Moon. Since both of these planets relate to the activity of the subtle body and the mind, such people are very perceptive and profound, they like to draw thorough conclusions and to give themselves up to reflection. Ashlesha people are also inclined towards seclusion, are capable of enduring serious austerities, are independent and rely only on themselves.

Magnetic attractiveness, sensuality and eroticism are inherent in the people of this nakshatra. And they can be very fascinated by the study of close intimate relationships.

The shadow side of this nakshatra is restlessness, when a person’s mind is in a very unsettled emotional state, experiencing anxieties, fears and melancholy.

Ashlesha belongs to the category of sharp stars, and therefore a person is not infrequently subject to fits of uncontrollable anger and hot temper. That is precisely why this star is favourable for divorces, separation and the parting of people, and the termination of business partnerships.

Since the people of this nakshatra are under the influence of Mercury and the Moon, they are psychically very vulnerable and possess a sensitive nervous system. They are inclined towards lies and cunning if they can achieve some goals by means of them.

The main task of people born under the influence of this star is to cultivate within themselves a feeling of gratitude and the courage to turn and face reality, perceiving life as it is, and not to live in their own illusory micro-world, although that is in fact what they most often like.

The qualities of this nakshatra — the capacity for leadership, the ability to lead people, political success, a mystical nature, success in the sphere of entertainment, astrological gifts, good intuition, writing and oratorical abilities, a poetic nature, learning, research and organisational abilities, snake charmers.

Despite the listed negative or contradictory qualities of this nakshatra, people of the Ashlesha type are considered the most intelligent and the most successful rulers for a country.

These people most willingly become close with those who are ready to accept their leadership and follow their instructions. Also, although these people are not inclined to trust others, they strike up relationships with those whom no one would trust, that is, with low people.

The Goddess AdhiParasakthi bestows the grace of ArumarundhuNayaki at this temple. Aslesha is in the Zodiac sign of Cancer, which has many medicinal qualities and can offer assistance with taking medicines. If the Moon travels through Aslesha during the waning cycle, it is a powerful time for people to gain relief from illnesses and ailments. Aslesha is also a favorable star for conducting planetary (Navagraha) fire rituals or Dhanvantripoojas.

Aslesha has the ability to help the body recover from mental and physical pain as well as heart sorrow. Some people may not struggle with physical ailments, but have mental illnesses or confusion. Aslesha star days are a positive time for these people to make offerings at Thirundhudevankudi for the Goddess ArumarundhuNayaki. An abhishekham to Lord Sri Karkadeswarar (an aspect of Shiva) with milk from black tongued and black-nippled cow is also an auspicious offering to perform during Aslesha star days. This will assist with the healing process of a serious illness. Those who suffer from diabetes, blood pressure, cancer, heart problems, kidney disease, or stomach ailments will benefit by making an offering to Lord Shiva.

Generally, those born under Aslesha have the medicinal character needed to recover from illness. They should offer vibhuti (sacred grey ash) to Sri Karkadeswarar and kumkum (vermillion powder) to Goddess Sri ArumarundhuAmbikai at the Thirundhudevankudi temple. They can also offer vibhuthi and kumkum to hospital patients if they cannot visit the temple. This is a remedy for strength to recover from illness. Tuesdays, New Moon days and Aslesha star days during the waning cycle are auspicious times for people to walk around the Thirundhudevankudi temple at least 36 times. This will also assist with health issues.
