The nakshatra Ashwini (1st of the 27 nakshatras, 0°00′ — 13°20′ of Aries) consists of three bright stars in the constellation of Aries. Ashwini — is a deva, a divine star, favourable by its nature. It is named in honour of the Ashwini Kumaras, the celestial twin brothers, the healers of the demigods, moving across the sky on a chariot, carrying with them light and happiness. The name of the nakshatra may be translated as «born of a mare», «horsewoman», «horse-woman».

The nakshatra Ashwini (00°00′ — 13°20′ of Aries)

General indications: the symbol of Ashwini is a horse's head, and their ruling deity is the Ashwin Kumaras, twin heroes with the heads of horses, clad in golden armour, belonging to ancient Vedic myth, who, being healers, manifested a multitude of miraculous cures of the celestials.

The story of the Ashwins

The Ashwins
(«possessing horses» or «born of a horse»)

In Vedic and Hindu mythology divine twin brothers living in the sky. The Ashwins belong to the celestial deities and are connected with the pre-dawn and evening twilight. Awakened by Ushas, they rush on a golden chariot (three-wheeled, three-seated, broad and so on), harnessed with horses, birds (eagle, swans, falcons) and so on, or on a hundred-oared ship across the sky over the whole world accompanied by Surya.

They travel round the universe in a day and drive away the darkness. In the morning those praying call them to themselves. The Ashwins are connoisseurs of time, they are born of heaven, their place is in both worlds. The Ashwins are saviours, helping in trouble; they bring gifts for the Aryans, wealth, food, horses, cows, bulls, children, light, happiness, victory, they give a long life, vital force; they protect singers, they reward them.

The role of the Ashwins as divine healers is emphasised (the Ashwins are «divine physicians», «all-knowing»): they return life to the dead, cure the blind and the lame, and perform other miraculous deeds. They save those perishing in the watery deep; they also give Shunahshepa advice on how to be saved from slaughter. This function of the Ashwins is fixed also in later texts («Mahabharata», «Gopatha-brahmana» and others).

The Ashwins are connected with honey (they give it to the bees, sprinkle the sacrifice with it, carry honey on a chariot and so on) and with soma, on the basis of which a hypothesis has been put forward about the replacement in Ancient India of the old intoxicating drink of honey by soma. The Ashwins are intolerant of strangers; they act against evil spirits, illnesses, misers, the envious.

Of all the deities of the Vedic pantheon it is precisely the Ashwins who are most closely connected with the solar deities and, like the latter, take part in wedding rituals.

The Ashwins are depicted as youthful (they are the most youthful of the gods, but at the same time also ancient, «Rigveda» VII 62, 5), strong, beautiful, possessing health; their brightness, their golden colour is emphasised (the colour of honey; several times they are called red), they are swift, dexterous, mighty, possess many forms («Rigveda» I 117, 9), adorned with garlands of lotus; they are dancers («Rigveda» VI 63, 5). They are compared with birds (eagle, geese), bulls, buffaloes, gazelles and so on. Later iconography makes these descriptions of the Ashwins more precise.

The main peculiarity of the Ashwins is their pairedness; and, although the Ashwins are twins, it is sometimes indicated that they were born separately; according to the ancient Indian lexicographer Yaska («Nirukta» XII 2), one of the Ashwins is the son of night, the other the son of dawn (one is the son of Sumakha, the other the son of heaven). It is not entirely clear how the Ashwins were differentiated from each other in the early period; later a number of oppositions take shape, with the elements of which each of the Ashwins is connected: heaven — earth, day — night, sun — moon and so on.

Their father is Dyaus — Heaven or Vivasvat (in another version — Martanda); their mother is called Ushas, the Ocean, the river Sindhu, Saranyu. Their wife is Ashwini. At the same time Ushas also acts as the sister of the Ashwins; they are also connected with the daughter of the sun god, Surya (the Ashwins are simultaneously her husbands and matchmakers for Soma); Pushan is their son, and at the same time the Ashwins (separately) are the parents of Nakula and Sahadeva — the two younger Pandavas.

The Ashwins also appear together with Indra, Rudra (and the rudras), Vach, Soma and so on.

In a number of mythological plots the Ashwins play a prominent role. The main one of these  describes the birth of the Ashwins. The daughter of Tvashtar, Saranyu, became the wife of Vivasvat. Having borne Vivasvat two twins, Yama and Yami, Saranyu, wearied by the strong heat of Vivasvat, replaced herself with a woman in all respects similar to her, and herself, turning into a mare, ran away from home. Noticing the deception, Vivasvat, turning into a horse, set off in pursuit and overtook her, emitting his seed into her mouth. But she, frightened that this was not the seed of her husband, expelled it through her nose. From this mighty seed appeared the twin Ashwins, whom the Vedas praise as «Unchangingly Truthful».

The Ashwins also appear in the plot of the duel of Indra with his former friend, the asura Namuchi. The Ashwins prepared a medicine which returned Indra's strength. The Ashwins also heal Indra when he drinks an excessive quantity of soma after the killing of Vishvarupa.

The Ashwins (Nasatya and Dasra) once saw the beauty Sukanya coming out of the water after bathing, and offered her to choose a husband from among them. Sukanya refused, since she already had a husband, the decrepit hermit Chyavana. Then the Ashwins rejuvenated Chyavana and together with him came out of the lake in the form of beautiful youths, indistinguishable from one another. By a secret sign Sukanya all the same managed to choose Chyavana, who in gratitude gave the Ashwins a share in the libations of soma, thereby arousing the anger of the envious Indra. Other motifs: the Ashwins give eyebrows to Kali; especially numerous are the motifs of the Ashwins saving someone from trouble.
