Mula Nakshatra
19. Mula (00°00′ — 13°20′ of Sagittarius)
Varahamihira: Those whose Moon is in Mula are arrogant, rich and happy and do not like to offend others. They have firm, settled views and live in prosperity.
General indications: The symbol of Mula is several root crops gathered together and tied. Its deity is Nirriti («calamity»), the goddess of destruction and decay, personifying evil and corruption, sometimes called Alakshmi — the opposite of Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity. Nirriti causes material deprivation, both directly and by driving away prosperity after it has been attained.
Since roots grow deep, into the sphere of the invisible, Mula is associated with reaching the bottom of existence — in the literal or the figurative sense — namely by scientific, philosophical and other methods of deep research. Although the individual often advances deeply into matters relating to the sphere of the planet placed in Mula, this penetration into the depths may bring no fruit, especially if the planet is afflicted in one way or another, since Nirriti and Mula counteract abundance. For example, if the lord of the 10th house of profession ends up in Mula, a person’s professional activity may not enrich him in the usual sense, but he will very probably penetrate to the very essence of the matter. The late Martin Luther King, in whose horoscope such a combination was present, was a man whose level of prosperity did not correspond to his professional achievements. Since Nirriti also signifies opposition, reverses and losses, Mula is associated with wilfulness, and also with borrowing and lending money with unfailing damage to one of the parties. And if that is so, it contradicts the rules of electional astrology to borrow or lend during the transit of the Moon over Mula, since the debts may drag on or cause much trouble.
The lagna or the Moon in Mula often signifies a capable and clever person with good makings of an orator, who can captivate listeners. Mula also indicates the invisible causes that have led to actual events, as, for example, microbes are the cause out of which a disease develops. Roots are also foundations, beginnings and origins. Since the roots of plants are widely used for medicinal purposes, Mula is also connected with medicines. The circumstance that the roots of Mula are tied adds a certain shade of confinement, dependence or limited mobility — all this is likewise a characteristic of this nakshatra. A rather clear tendency to be deceived or betrayed by colleagues or fellow workers may be traced.
Physiology and diseases: The feet; the left half of the trunk.
Professions, people and places of habitation: Medicine. Doctors and healers. Traders in root crops, flowers and fruit. Ministers, officials and judges (sometimes). Palaces of justice and large institutions. Researchers and testers in various fields. Opponents and those who like to defend the opposing point of view. Debaters, orators and politicians.

The key concept
Researching the causes and origins of problems, gaining success by getting out of the beaten track, avoiding old methods and introducing the improvements necessary for future accomplishment.
Mula possesses a strong intellect aimed at the study and investigation of all that exists, and indicates a person seeking the deep meaning of life. This is a very powerful nakshatra on the material plane — it can give a position in society and prosperity. The problem consists in the fact that at a certain moment in time Mula takes back what it has given. However, this is not so terrible, since in the end death will take everything from everyone.
This is a very impulsive nakshatra, but in most cases it regrets its actions after the fact. Only when its will is in harmony with the will of the Universe is the functioning of Mula directed by the judicious Jupiter. The struggle between the personal and the general reaches its peak in this nakshatra, since individuality is at the summit of its expression. Mula personalities are sometimes unable to understand their own powers and abilities. In some cases this is good, since ignorance limits their ability to cause damage to themselves and others.
Mula is able to give power and dominion. Sometimes this may engender ego, vanity and arrogance, which lead to actions that are repulsive and demonic. For a Mula person it is vitally important to develop the ability to master the passions, and this is a difficult task. But having accomplished it, he gains the opportunity to direct his energy into the channel of spiritual development.
Among the parts of the body Mula is connected with the legs, which bear the load of the whole organism, and this emphasises its ability to take on great responsibility. It promotes the renunciation of violence and protects well, gives results in the form of a bright flash, and knows how to develop talents that were given in a past life.
People who have Mula somehow connected with the Lagna may have a large nose, protruding ears and a thick lower lip. They cannot boast of attractiveness in the general sense of the word, but they have a peculiar magnetism and charm. Mula people are quite easy to spot in a crowd — they display arrogance towards others. Sarcasm, boldness and restraint go hand in hand in Mula’s behaviour. Personalities of this nakshatra have a tendency to dramatise a situation openly, to overplay. They have a special view of things, which they oppose to the view of those around them. They may display excessive zeal when decisive measures need to be applied to settle a situation. Their special talent consists in getting to the bottom of any problem without beating about the bush. However, such a direct approach may create problems in the case of mistaken judgements.
A person who has the Moon in Mula is often capable and clever, possesses the makings of an orator and can captivate listeners. Sometimes withdrawal and dependence manifest. A clear tendency to be deceived or betrayed by colleagues and fellow workers may be traced.
Since Mula means «root», these people «see to the root» and always understand the essence of things. They are the ones who are able first to destroy everything completely in order to create something new afterwards. They are bold and independent, and have an inquisitive mind and a philosophical nature. The nakshatra Mula brings pain. And often people with this nakshatra hurt both others and themselves, and, as a result, receive what has been prepared for them from birth. This nakshatra is associated with destruction, black magic, punishments and the driving out of devilish forces from a person by means of life’s lessons. Such qualities as sharpness, insolence and aggression may be present.
Men
Mula men have bright eyes, an attracting gaze and an attractive outward appearance.
They have a soft character, love peace and quiet, often do not think about tomorrow and take little care of their affairs. They love to give advice to others, but themselves ignore the advice of others. A wrong attitude to money and an inability to match income with expenditure lead to debts. They do not know how to refuse friends, and those use them for their own ends — pushing them into great expenses. It is worth displaying more selfishness in choosing friends. They are industrious and give their all if partners deserve their trust. They often earn money far from their place of birth. They show themselves well in social work and in the sphere of the arts. In time they may become quite good writers.
In childhood they receive benefit from their parents; later they live independently and do not count on the help of relatives. As wives they get good housewives.
They take little care of their health, but outwardly do not look ill. Years of life dangerous for illnesses: 27, 31, 44, 48, 56, 60. Intoxicants should be avoided — there is a tendency to become addicted quickly. Problems with the stomach and paralysis are possible.
Women
Mula women are usually swarthy, and they have a characteristic outward sign: a gap between the front teeth. They are open-hearted and frank, but display stubbornness. Usually they are not very educated and are not inclined to study. Exceptions are possible if in the natal chart Jupiter is located in the nakshatra Magha or aspects it.
Delays in entering into marriage are possible. The marriage is rarely happy — either divorce or widowhood. With an unfavourable Mars, problems with children are possible.
Pains in the back, hips, arms or shoulders, rheumatism and lumbago are possible.
The padas (quarters)
The 1st pada of the nakshatra Mula (00º00′ — 03º20′ of Sagittarius) falls into the navamsha of Aries, ruled by Mars. This pada is connected with all kinds of searches and investigations, both on the spiritual and on the material level. In its worst manifestation it gives uncontrollable selfishness and arrogance. Usually few children or childlessness. Planets placed in this pada (especially the Moon) are harmful for the father’s well-being. The Sun, Jupiter, Mars and Ketu are strong.
The 2nd pada of the nakshatra Mula (03º20′ — 06º40′ of Sagittarius) falls into the navamsha of Taurus, ruled by Venus. If there are material goals, the native is exceedingly industrious. Creative abilities in art, music and other «Venusian» kinds of activity manifest well. Truthfulness, kindness, but an unhappy family life. Planets in this pada give bad results for the mother’s well-being. Jupiter, Mars, the Moon and Venus feel good here.
The 3rd pada of the nakshatra Mula (06º40′ — 10º00′ of Sagittarius) falls into the navamsha of Gemini, ruled by Mercury. The accent in this pada is placed on communication, wordplay and relationships. With a good placement of the planets a balance between material and spiritual values is created here; when afflicted, extreme poverty is quite likely. Beauty and passion. Jupiter, Mercury, Rahu and Ketu can give good results in this pada.
The 4th pada of the nakshatra Mula (10º00′ — 13º20′ of Sagittarius) falls into the navamsha of Cancer, ruled by the Moon. This is the most turbulent pada; here there is a constant struggle between the emotions and the intellect. The best option for natives who are under the strong influence of the fourth pada is to sacrifice the emotions for the sake of high goals. Strength, intelligence, the ability to overcome obstacles. The most favourable planet for directing the energy of this pada is Jupiter.
The ruling planet
Ketu is the chief ruler of this nakshatra. Being a destructive constellation, Mula relates to a greater degree to the destructive aspect of Ketu. But the destructiveness of Ketu may be a boon: it gives rise to the new, gives the opportunity to begin a spiritual transformation. Besides, this planet gives access to penetration both into invisible spheres and into the invisible causes of visible things and events.
The influence of Jupiter on this nakshatra guarantees that the transformations of Mula are basically positive. Jupiter’s task is to direct the energy of Ketu wisely. In most cases this is possible when the energies of Jupiter and Saturn are in harmony.
Mula has a strong energy that can create either a pious sage or a demonic entity wishing to subjugate everything and everyone. The intemperance of Mula is connected with the fiery aspect of Ketu, and therefore this nakshatra gives good or bad results in an explosive way. The intemperance of this nakshatra makes it favourable for war and other similar actions. Most prominent commanders and military leaders have important planets placed in Mula.
A conjunction of Jupiter with Ketu in the chart carries an energy similar to the energy of Mula. The Sun, Mars and Jupiter give good results in it. Ketu almost always lends a certain peculiarity to the native, since it is very strong in this nakshatra.

THE NINETEENTH STAR — MULA 0-13° 20’ OF SAGITTARIUS
The nakshatra consists of six stars. The Greek name is Scorpionis. «Mula» in translation means «root», which indicates people seeking
the first cause of life. Mula is a demonic star of a low order, sharp in character. People who are under the influence of this star are clever and capable, but live in relatively bad conditions and are suspicious. They may be devoted to spiritual things. The presiding deity of this nakshatra is Nirriti, the queen of the dead, who represents evil.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PEOPLE BORN UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF MULA
Men
Attractive, handsome, with an attracting gaze. Principled, they do not think about tomorrow. They love peace and quiet and do not take much care of their affairs. They prefer to go with the flow. They give advice to others, but cannot follow it themselves. They frequently change profession and therefore have an unstable material position. Sometimes friends use them for their own ends. They are industrious; luck comes to them far from their native places, perhaps abroad. The sphere of art and literature suits them. They are completely self-reliant; parents and relatives do not help them. They have a good wife, but there are problems in family life. They do not take care of their health. Problems with the stomach and paralysis are possible. But even if they are seriously ill, this is not reflected in their outward appearance. Narcotic and stupefying substances should be avoided, since addiction develops quickly.
Critical years: 27, 31, 44, 38, 56 and 60 years of age.
Women
Swarthy, sometimes they have unattractive front teeth. They are frank and open-hearted, but stubborn. They do not receive a good education, but if in the horoscope Jupiter is placed in Magha, a woman may become an excellent doctor. They will live in solitude because of the husband’s death or divorce. If the position of Mars is unfavourable, problems from the husband and children are to be expected. Rheumatism and pains in the back, arms and shoulders are possible.

RAHU IN MULA
Rahu in the 1st quarter, 0°- 3° 20’ of Sagittarius

Rahu in the 2nd quarter, 3° 20’ — 6° 40* of Sagittarius
This position of Rahu becomes fateful for a woman if the lagna of her horoscope is placed in Mrigashira. In this case the owner of the horoscope is deprived of happiness and peace in her life, and also becomes the cause of the ruin or even the destruction of her family
Rahu in the 3rd quarter, 6° 40’- 10° of Sagittarius
A good education, learning, erudition, the possession of landed property. But in the sixth decade of his life the owner of the horoscope will lose his fortune. This becomes certain if the Moon is placed in Jyeshtha.
Rahu in the 4th quarter, 10° â 13° 20′ of Sagittarius
This position of Rahu becomes significant when the lagna falls in the 1st or 2nd quarter of Vishakha. In this case the owner of the horoscope will have excellent organisational qualities but an immoral character, and will travel a great deal to foreign countries.
KETU IN MULA
Ketu in the 1st quarter, 0° — 3° 20’ of Sagittarius
If the ascendant falls in Anuradha, the owner of the horoscope will be endowed with landed property and wealth. However, a considerable loss of money and real estate awaits him at the age of 31, but after 35 he will be able to make up his losses.
Ketu in the 2nd quarter, 3° 20 ’ — 6° 40 ’ of Sagittarius
Wealth and landed property. If Mars is conjunct Ketu in this quarter, the owner of the horoscope will occupy a very high position in society.
Ketu in the 3rd quarter, 6° 40’ — 10° of Sagittarius
The same characteristics as in the 1st and 2nd quarters. But unlike the previous quarters, Ketu here speaks of diseases of the heart or blood.
Ketu in the 4th quarter, 10° — 13° 20’ of Sagittarius
An extraordinary elevation in life awaits the owner of the horoscope, but also failures in the family. Relatives may become his enemies and bring him a good deal of trouble and problems.
GENERAL REMARKS
Mula, like Jyeshtha, is considered a special nakshatra, and therefore for more precise predictions the nakshatra should be divided into 15 parts of 53’ 20” each and the characteristics of the various parts taken into account.
• 0° — 0° 53’ 20” of Sagittarius — Birth in this part of Mula speaks of the possible premature death of the father.
• 0° 53’ 20” — 1° 46’ 40” of Sagittarius — The death of an uncle, the father’s brother, is possible.
• 1° 46’ 40” — 2° 40’ of Sagittarius — If the owner of the horoscope has a sister, his birth in this part of Mula speaks of the sister’s probable early widowhood.
• 2° 40’ — 3° 33’ 20” of Sagittarius — The birth of a child in this part of Mula will bring the death of the paternal grandfather.
• 3° 33’ 20” — 4° 26’ 40” of Sagittarius — the premature death or illness of the mother is possible.
• 4° 26′ 40” — 5° 20’ of Sagittarius — A threat to the mother’s sister.
• 5° 20’ — 6° 13’ 20” of Sagittarius — A threat to the mother’s brother.
• 6° 13’ 20” — 7° 6’ 40” of Sagittarius — Trouble is possible for the wife and for the paternal uncle.
• 7° 6’ 40” — 8° of Sagittarius — Birth in this part of Mula speaks of misfortunes for the whole family of the horoscope’s owner.
• 8° — 8° 53’ 20” of Sagittarius — Bad for cattle or domestic animals in the house.
• 8° 53’ 20” — 9° 46’ 40” of Sagittarius — Unfavourable for servants.
• 9° 46’ 40” — 10° 40’ of Sagittarius — Birth in this part of Mula speaks of the possibility of the early death of the owner of the horoscope himself or of a serious illness in childhood.
• 10° 40’ — 11° 33’ 20” of Sagittarius — Trouble is possible for the elder brother, for example illness.
• 11° 33’ 20” — 12° 26’ 40” of Sagittarius — Trouble is possible for the elder brother.
• 12° 26’ 40” — 13° 20’ of Sagittarius — It speaks of the possibility of the early death of the mother’s father.
Stellar astrologers hold that birth in the 1st quarter of Mula speaks of the early death of the father; the 2nd quarter is considered unfavourable for the mother; the 3rd quarter of Mula brings a loss of wealth; while birth in the 4th quarter of Mula is recognised as very favourable from the material point of view and promises all the enjoyments of life. The ancient sages consider the negative influence of the 1st quarter of Mula so strong that even a man who marries a woman born in the 1st quarter of Mula will lose his father soon after the wedding. Birth in Mula is considered unfavourable for girls, while a boy born in Mula, on the contrary, will bring luck or elevation to his family, and may himself become «like a king» and occupy a very high position in society.
The last degree of the constellation Jyeshtha and the first two degrees of Mula are known as «Abhukta-Mula». Abhukta-Mula is written about in more detail in the following chapter.
DESTRUCTIVE DEGREES
Mars — the 2nd° of Sagittarius
Rahu -10° of Sagittarius
Ketu -11° of Sagittarius
If a strong Jupiter or the Moon does not aspect these planets, the life span of the horoscope’s owner is shortened. It is recommended to be careful whenever Mars, Rahu and Ketu pass over the corresponding degrees.
