The Moon in the 4th house
The results given by the Moon in the fourth house of the horoscope
Usually these are people with an open heart, pleasant in conversation, reasonable and receptive. They have a multitude of items of knowledge and are friends with good people. They often change their place of residence, own property and live in beautiful places. They are excessively demanding towards the people living with them and are usually quite sensitive. Their heart is satisfied. (Tom Hopke)
Chandra (the Moon) in the 4th house
The Moon in the 4th house. Benevolence and warmth, good manners, reasonableness, receptivity, happiness (if the Moon is waxing and unafflicted). Such people often change their place of residence and own good real estate. They may be excessively demanding towards people and have problems in relations with their mother. (Indubala)
The Moon in the fourth house: material profit from the state, conveniences, popularity with the people. (Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)
The Moon in the 4th house: this is an excellent placement for the Moon. This is the place of dig bala for the Moon. That is, the Moon feels excellent in the 4th house. Why is the Moon well off in the 4th house? The 4th house represents our thoughts. This is our manasa, not the brain. Manasa generates thoughts. Thoughts change instantly. The Moon too shows us every day its fast, changeable character. It decreases when it goes towards the Sun, and increases when it moves away from the Sun. Both the 4th house and the Moon represent manasa. Therefore the fast Moon suits the 4th house best of all. The 1st house shows the brain. Decisions are taken there. When decisions are taken, the person must be firm and attentive. The first house needs not emotions but intellect, calculation and boldness… therefore the fast emotional Moon has nothing to do there.
These people are very gentle and kind. They have no malicious thoughts. They do not want to offend people and want to please everyone. These indicators are strengthened if Taurus or Cancer is in the 4th house. Such people will be able calmly to have good housing. They will have a successful comfortable life, especially in the second half of life. They receive help from their mother and other relatives. They have very good relations with their mother. Wherever such a person goes, he will everywhere be received with all honours. He worries greatly for others and wants to help everyone. As I said above, Gautama Buddha had the Moon in the 4th house. It must be known that this is how the Moon behaves when it is favourably placed. A favourable Moon in the 4th house gives comfort of every kind, successes, real estate and spiritual development. If it is damaged, the person’s thoughts will be different. In that case he will want to be malicious and to take revenge. If the Moon is waning and damaged, the mother’s health may deteriorate or she may die early. When the dasha period of the Moon begins, the person often has to part with his mother. He will be able to improve his housing conditions. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)
“Bhrigu Sutra” 2.19-24
The owner of the horoscope will be crowned as a king and will own a large number of horses. He will attain financial and agricultural prosperity. His mother will be sickly. Nursed on the milk of another woman rather than his mother, in mature age the owner of the horoscope will be abundantly provided with milk and with plentiful, tasty food. He will be happy not with his own wife but with other women. With a strong, full Moon or with the Moon in Cancer his mother will live a long life; with a weak, waning Moon — the reverse. A weak Moon speaks of an absence of means of transport for the owner of the horoscope. With a strong Moon or an exalted lord of the 4th house one may expect luck in acquiring means of transport.
Comments:
The characteristics of the Moon in the 4th house of the horoscope are revealed in accordance with the significations of this house: property, the mother, agricultural plots, milk and possessions. To the favourable placements of the Moon, besides the Moon in Cancer or a full Moon (with the Sun in the 10th house), one may also add its presence in:
• Gemini (the lagna in Pisces, the Moon is the lady of the 5th house);
• Aquarius (the lagna in Scorpio, the Moon is the lady of the 9th house);
• Capricorn (the lagna in Libra, the Moon is the lady of the 10th house).
In these cases the owner of the horoscope will be well educated and have considerable property.
The unfavourable points regarding the mother which Bhrigu Muni describes follow from the theory of “Karaka bhava nashaya”, according to which a karaka planet, being placed in its own house, gives negative functional characteristics. The Moon, as the matri karaka, the indicator of the mother, being in the house of the mother, causes her illness, a short life, an early separation or difficult relations with her. The other significations of the 4th house — education and property — will not suffer, if there is no strong affliction of the 4th house or of its lord. Quite positive characteristics will manifest with a full Moon (the Sun in the 10th house), and also with “shukla paksha” — a waxing Moon. A waning Moon will bring a short life to the mother, and fewer chances of owning real estate. The same characteristics will manifest with a conjunction of the Moon with the Sun as well.
Other opinions concerning the Moon (Chandra) in the 4th house:
“Brihat Jataka” — happiness.
“Phaladipika” — the owner of the horoscope will love luxury and women, have many friends, and enjoy the cosiness and comfort of his possessions. He will be inclined towards charity.
“Saravali” — surrounded by friends and relatives, the owner of the horoscope will own a house and property and will conduct his financial affairs across the seas (rivers or the ocean).
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — the owner of the horoscope will occupy a high post in the government. A happy family life awaits him, although he himself is deprived of parental care in childhood.

THE RESULTS OF THE PLACEMENT OF CHANDRA IN THE 4TH BHAVA
If Chandra occupies the 4th Bhava, then the person will obtain profit through things created in water (fish, pearls, corals, shells and so on). He will be happy thanks to the possession of agricultural land, a wife, a means of transport, a son and so on. Besides this, such a person will be devoted to the Brahmins, to the gods and goddesses.
Comments: If Chandra [the Moon] and a watery Rashi [sign], endowed with full strength and favourable influences, are in the 4th Bhava [house], then the person will obtain profit through the following — milk, fish, vegetables (such as the water chestnut, the lotus stem, the sweet melon and other juicy fruits). This is explained by the fact that Chandra, the 4th Bhava and a watery Rashi represent that which contains water (their primary element is Water); moreover, Chandra in the 4th Bhava gives influence through its aspect on the 10th Bhava (occupation, work). Besides this, the atmosphere in the person’s home will be imbued with sweetness, love, kind relations, and positive feelings and ideas.
According to the treatise ‘Bhatta Narayana’ Chandra, placed in the 4th Bhava, will make the person the heir (successor) of a kingdom and happy thanks to the happiness of the members of his family, but he will be happy in childhood.
According to ‘Jiva Natha’ the person will obtain a wife, a son, happiness, a kingdom, wealth and so on not in childhood but in youth.
With a strong Chandra placed in the 4th Bhava the person will obtain popularity, a change of place of residence, good health and a long life for his mother, affection and help from his mother, a means of transport, horned cattle, peace of mind, good health and the like.
