The Sun in the 9th house

The Sun in the 9th house. This is an influential or strong person, somewhat rash and given to extremes in his behaviour. The earnings of these people are connected with the transport of goods, with creative work or with religion. They delight in travel, are interested in politics, and are as a rule ambitious. They suffer as a consequence of conflicts with the state and with the opposite sex. (Tom Hopke)

Surya (the Sun) in the ninth house

Ambition, rashness, creative abilities, travel, an early separation from the father or bad relations with him. These people are strong and influential and are interested in religion, philosophy and politics. Troubles with the law and the authorities and disappointments in love are possible. (Indubala)

The Sun in the ninth house:  care for elders, spirituality.

The Sun in the 9th house, placed in a friendly sign, inclines the person to visit holy places and to perform religious rites.

If the 9th house is occupied by the Sun and the Moon (a new moon) in conjunction with Mars, or by a conjunction of the Moon, Mars and Mercury, much suffering will fall to the person at the beginning of life.

If the Sun has a relation to the 9th house, the person possesses a majestic bearing, administrative and managerial   inclinations, and his life is from time to time lit up by bright flashes.

(Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)

The Sun in the ninth house makes the person noble, intelligent, educated and well known. Here the Sun impels one more towards spiritual development. He loves his father very much, regardless of how the father treats him. Such a person may not receive an inheritance from his father; despite this, he loves and respects his father very much. You are probably wondering why the father does not give him an inheritance? The father thinks: “Why give an inheritance to one who is seeking the path to nirvana?” He will be known as a kind, spiritual person. A debilitated Sun gives very bad results here. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)

“Bhrigu Sutra” 1.83-87

If the Sun is in the 9th house, the owner of the horoscope will be devoted to the Sun God and to other gods. He will be religious, but not especially fortunate, and hostile towards his father. If the Sun is exalted or is in its own sign, excellent results will manifest: the owner of the horoscope will be happy with his wife and children, and his father will live a long life. The owner of the horoscope will be very wealthy, inclined towards asceticism and meditation and devoted to his spiritual teacher and to God. If the Sun is in its sign of weakness, in an inimical or unfavourable sign, or experiences a ruinous aspect — the life of the father of the owner of the horoscope will be short. If the Sun is aspected by or is
in conjunction with a benefic planet, a long life for the father is to be expected.

Comments:

The 9th house is called in Vedic astrology the “dharma sthana”, and the presence in it of the Sun, a planet of sattva guna, gives religiousness and a philosophical cast of mind. But because of the unfavourable character of the Sun the characteristics of the 9th house, as an indicator of the father and of fortune in life, suffer. Being the fifth from the 5th house, the 9th house is also the house of children and prosperity. With Leo rising, the 9th house is in Aries, the sign of exaltation of the Sun, and also with the Sun in the 9th house in Leo strong raja yogas are created. Luck, prosperity, fame and a happy family life await a person with such a placement of the Sun in his horoscope. This speaks of favourable karma and a multitude of blessings obtained in a past life. A person who has the Sun placed in the 9th house will love travel and will make many trips abroad.

Other opinions concerning the Sun in the 9th house:

“Brihat Jataka” — wealth, happiness and good children.

“Phaladipika” — the owner of the horoscope, honouring the brahmins and the Supreme Personality of Godhead, will obtain happiness from children and relatives. But his father will live a short and unhappy life.

“Saravali” — the owner of the horoscope will be happy and wealthy; he will have good children, will honour the brahmins and worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but will be hostilely disposed towards his mother.

“Chamatkar Chintamani” — the owner of the horoscope will become a mentally unbalanced personality with demonic inclinations, reluctantly observing religious rituals. His brothers will bring him misfortune.

Note: Each of the authors expresses his own opinion regarding the placement of the Sun in the 9th house, which is astrologically well founded and just. For example, the hostile relations with the mother mentioned in the “Saravali” are explained by the unfavourable character of the Sun in the 9th house, as the sixth counting from the matri sthana, the 4th house, while the misfortunes from brothers predicted by the “Chamatkar Chintamani” are explained by the aspect of the Sun on the 3rd house. The difference of opinions about the personality of the owner of the horoscope and the life of his father arises from the fact that the weak or strong placement of the Sun and the aspects to it are not taken into account. Bhrigu Muni brilliantly resolves the contradictions, covering in detail the various points of the placement of the Sun in the 9th house.

The results of the placement of the Sun in the 9th house

If Surya is placed in the 9th Bhava, then the person will be occupied with performing the traditions (rites) of his religion, will be endowed with a noble and excellent intellect, obtains happiness thanks to the happiness of his son and his friend, but has an aversion (enmity) towards his mother’s family.

Comments: Surya [the Sun] is a Sattvic Graha [planet], and the 9th Bhava [house] is connected with Tapas [asceticism], devotion, reverence, spirituality, religion and so on. Therefore if the Sun in this house is endowed with strength, then the person of course possesses religious inclinations and a spirit of patriotism; he is an ascetic and respects elders and teachers. The sons of such a person attain great advancement, his wife is a virtuous woman, his father has robust health, and he himself lives long. Such a person obtains a reputation thanks to good and virtuous deeds. He obtains benefit from people occupying high posts in the state or the government. The Sun here is also considered favourable for the growth of wealth.

the Sun in the 9th house

The 9th house rules a person’s social integration, his ability to find a connection with the world, with God, with various egregores and other social functions.

The Sun in the ninth house gives the person conviction in his own vision of the world, philosophy and culture. At the same time it is difficult to begin interacting with the world on the basis of one’s own paradigm of perception of the world.

The placement of the Sun in the 9th house is fairly favourable. The strength of the Sun will be directly proportional to the influence on public opinion. This placement may give practically the whole spectrum of social figures, beginning with a YouTube blogger and ending with a powerful leader.

The person identifies himself with a public personality and strives to influence people, and also for recognition in society. A comfortable placement for leaders, politicians, doctors, teachers, PR specialists and other social professions.

Although the placement of the Sun in the 9th house is fairly pleasant, nevertheless it creates hindrances (argalas) for the 8th (inner life), the 6th (conflicts, independence) and the 11th (prospects).

The main task with such a placement is to learn to be tolerant of the differences of people, and also to be constantly in contact with society and with one’s audience.

A favourable the Sun in the 9th house:

  • Influence on people
  • Charisma
  • Deep social integration
  • Respect on the part of people
  • Respect for teachers and pupils
  • Fair judging
  • Broad knowledge in creative work and culture
  • Respect for laws and rules
  • A reliable life companion
  • A philosophical cast of mind

An unfavourable the Sun in the 9th house:

  • Fanaticism, nationalism, narrow thinking
  • A utopian vision of the world
  • Hypocritical politics
  • Closedness from people
  • Ambitiousness and presumption
  • A revolutionary spirit, envy of leaders
  • Grievances against politicians and society
  • Weakness in trade and creative work

Health:

The 9th house is responsible for the hips, the buttocks and the pelvic area.

An impairment of the Sun in the 9th house gives unattractive hips, and an incorrect or pathological shape of the pelvis and the legs down to the knees. In rare cases and with severe damage to the Sun rheumatoid arthritis of the pelvic bones arises. Sometimes osteoporosis. In advanced age there are also fractures or injuries of the pelvis or the femoral bones.

Conclusion:

The placement of the Sun in the ninth house is on the whole fairly favourable, if the person comes out of his comfort zone and goes to people with his thoughts, ideas and researches. Illnesses arise quite rarely. The person loves to engage in useful work for society. Personally I have encountered the bad properties of the Sun in the 9th house quite rarely. It is also worth saying that such a person may have a strict father or teacher who from childhood instilled protective values.
