The nakshatra Mrigashira (5th of the 27 nakshatras, 23° 20′ of Taurus — 6° 40′ of Gemini).

«Those whose Moon resides in this nakshatra lack firmness and constancy, at times they are even shy, they have good speech, they are energetic, rich and indulge themselves in the pleasures of love» (Varahamihira). 

General indications: the symbol of Mrigashira is a deer, and its ruling deity is the Moon. Literally Mrigashira means «the head of a deer». It once happened that the Creator Brahma was inflamed with desire for his own daughter. The frightened girl took the form of a doe (the previous nakshatra Rohini, «the red doe», ruled by Brahma) and fled to the sky, but her dissolute father embodied himself as a stag and began to pursue her. To save the girl from the cosmic incest threatening her, the god Shiva cooled Brahma's ardour by cutting off the deer's head, which remained in the heavens in the form of the nakshatra Mrigashira. If Saturn as the lord of the 7th house occupies this nakshatra, this often indicates an unhappy marriage or discord arising as a consequence of ill-considered amorous impulses, which is precisely what this myth illustrates.

Since deer are timid, fearful and nervous creatures, whose lot is restless leaping and wandering in a constant search for food and safety, the basic properties of Mrigashira are the investigation of things and the search for them. Mrigashira also carries within it a surge of softness and tenderness, evoked by the contemplation of a deer. In that part of the nakshatra which falls into the earthy sign of Taurus, the search takes place on the physical plane, and on the mental — in that half of it which falls into the airy sign of Gemini. Since deer wander in circles along certain trails, this asterism is associated with journeys, removals, paths and roads. Mrigashira also indicates such an occupation as hunting, which may be regarded as one of the varieties of searching. Since its deity, the Moon, is a bewitching, unstable, inconstant, changeable being, Mrigashira indicates an intelligent, persuasive person, sensitive and inconstant. Other traditional associations include marriage, jewels, leadership, investigations and greatness. When the lagna or the Moon are in Mrigashira, the native is often distrustful and loves to wander.

The ancient Vedic sages considered that in Mrigashira Shakti is manifested (the great energy of the feminine Divine principle). This nakshatra radiates such qualities as benevolence, charm, changeability, compassion, playfulness and merriment. Its modesty and tenderness should not be confused with cowardice, since it can be very strong, unshakeable and even prone to anger, if there is a need for this.

The essence of this nakshatra can be described in one word — seeking. Mrigashira is very curious and in this is similar to Rahu. It pushes one towards the search for new experiences and the obtaining of new experience, but this brings genuine satisfaction and benefit only in the case where it assists the attainment of the main goal of life; otherwise the satisfaction will be temporary, and afterwards sadness and disappointment will set in.

Mrigashira endows a person with varied artistic talents. In its highest manifestation it helps one to find one's path; in its lowest — it compels one endlessly to chase after fresh impressions, and assists the development of inconstancy, superficiality. Those born under this nakshatra need to learn to bring matters to completion.

Mrigashira focuses a person's attention on mental activity. They are very quick-witted, able to study a multitude of subjects easily and quickly. They have a talent for intellectual labour.
