The Sun in the 8th house

Usually a person with the Sun placed in the 8th house is shy and avoids being in view. Such people settle far from the place in which they were born. They have weak eyesight and poor digestion, and usually have a small number of children. They are interested in mysticism; they may earn money in state service. (Tom Hopke)

Surya (the Sun) in the 8th house

An interest in mysticism and in questions connected with death, weak eyesight, problems with digestion. The Sun in the eighth house endows one with shyness and inconspicuousness, and gives few children. As a rule these people live far from the place of their birth.

The Sun in the eighth house: leanness, sickliness, poor eyesight, a dull life, a mystic, a medium, strong sexual and emotional ties, an average life span; in a woman’s chart — widowhood.

The Sun or another malefic in the 8th house causes tuberculosis, coughing, haemorrhoids, diseases of the rectum, and problems with the spleen, the skin and the genitourinary system. (Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)

The Sun in the 8th house gives the person various problems and illnesses. Such people are not inclined to think about the consequences of their actions. The Sun gives diseases of the eyes, since here it aspects the 2nd house. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)

“Bhrigu Sutra” 1.75-82

If the Sun is in the 8th house of the horoscope, the person will have few children. He will not avoid eye diseases and other chronic diseases, and only with a good aspect of the Sun will he avoid a head injury in his 10th year of life. Being not wealthy, the owner of the horoscope will lose his domestic cattle. A person who has the Sun occupying the 8th house will become well known. A conjunction of the Sun with strong planets will make the owner of the horoscope a landowner. If the Sun is exalted or is in its own sign, a great length of life is to be expected.

Comments:

The 2nd house, which characterises health and eyesight, receives the aspect of an unfavourable Sun from the 8th house. This explains the chronic diseases and problems with eyesight in the owner of the horoscope. The 2nd house is also the house of wealth, the dhana bhava, and its affliction by the Sun does not bring good prosperity. And if at the same time the Sun is the lord of the 4th house, then the owner of the horoscope will lose land or real estate. But a strong Sun or a favourable aspect to it may bring a good inheritance. The Sun, as the planet of the vital forces, being strong (in the signs of Aries or Leo) and located in the house of the length of life, grants a long life.

Other opinions concerning the Sun in the 8th house:

“Brihat Jataka” — little offspring and defects of eyesight.

“Phaladipika” — the loss of wealth, prosperity and friends, and poor eyesight have fallen to the lot of the owner of the horoscope.

“Saravali” — separated from dear and close people, deprived of happiness and wealth, suffering from diseases of the eyes, the owner of the horoscope will live a short life.

“Chamatkar Chintamani” — a person who has the Sun placed in the 8th house will readily perform any work entrusted to him, since he will always experience material difficulties. Thefts and diseases of the sacral organs will pursue him. He will be inclined towards the use of drugs and towards close relations with foreigners.

Note: The opinions of the authors are similar to the “Bhrigu Sutra” regarding the characteristics of a person who has the Sun occupying the 8th house of the horoscope. The remarks of the “Chamatkar Chintamani” are entirely appropriate for the indications of the 8th house.

The results of the placement of the Sun in the eighth house

If Surya is placed in the 8th Bhava, then the person’s eyes will be small (he will have a disease of the eyes worsening his eyesight), he will have very  many enemies, he will be extremely wrathful, with a sluggish (“stupid”) mind, a lack of wealth and a weak body.

Comments: The results of Surya [the Sun] in the 8th Bhava [house] are also these: a weakening of eyesight, the loss of the paternal wealth, sufferings in the mind, bad behaviour and a decrease of vital force. The person experiences a lack of enthusiasm and liveliness (vitality). There is a danger of breaking bones. It is considered that the placement of the Sun in the 8th house will give calamities or misfortunes in old age.

the Sun in the 8th house

The 8th house rules a person’s inner world. The Sun, being here, creates a protective barrier between thoughts and reality. This barrier may give the person both self-confidence and schizophrenia or a split personality. Everything depends on the quality and strength of the Sun.

To the inner world belong thoughts, ideas, fantasy, secrets, reflections and much else. The placement of the Sun in the 8th house cannot be called the best, because in the modern world there is an enormous multitude of all kinds of irritants for the ego, and a person with such a placement of the Sun may close up in his shell and not crawl out of it for a long time.

The Sun in the 8th house gives the person the strength to keep and guard his inner reality from the invasion of others’ thoughts and desires. Such people always know what they are thinking about, what they believe in, what they dream of. Such a placement requires a sensitive partner who will understand everything without words.

As a rule, such a placement of the Sun testifies to a harsh childhood and insufficient contact with the father. The person grows up with a deficient understanding of the external, business life and often dwells in his own comfortable inner world.

Being in the 8th house, the Sun creates argalas (hindrances to development) in partnership, the attainment of success in business, finding one’s way in life, stable activity, clarity of understanding of life, and care for children.

A favourable the Sun in the 8th house:

  • An ability to keep secrets
  • Protection of one’s interests
  • A stable thought process
  • A high degree of protection from pressure in relationships
  • A healthy pragmatism
  • Observation of people
  • Excellent diplomats and mediators
  • Shyness
  • Faith in and fidelity to the partner

An unfavourable the Sun in the 8th house:

  • A split of the personality into fantasy and reality
  • An unwillingness to come out of one’s thoughts
  • Social closedness and sociopathy
  • An absence of sincerity in close relationships
  • Defencelessness against ideology
  • Formulaic behaviour in business relations
  • Hidden touchiness, intrigue
  • Possibly the theft or mimicry of others’ words, ideas and thoughts
  • Occasionally betrayal out of fear

Health:

The 8th house is in charge of the genitals, the large intestine, the anus, the bladder and the reproductive system.

A weak Sun in the 8th house gives low immunity in these areas of the body, which leads to various viral and bacterial infections. Occasionally autoimmune diseases of the zones described above. In women failures and delays in the menstrual cycle are observed.

Conclusion:

The placement of the Sun in the zone of personal life (the 6th, 7th, 8th houses) cannot be called ideal. Even if the Sun is strong and favourable, it will all the same create difficulties in contact at a close distance of communication.

The Sun in the 8th house does not allow the person to open up normally before his partner and the world in general, therefore an inhibition of the person in his own inner world is often present. Fortunately, this placement is easily corrected by the right choice of partner.
