Aries (Mesha)
This is a movable sign — and therefore a person born under this sign travels a great deal. Aries natives are restless, always on the move. They love sport and physical exercise, since this gives an outlet to the excess of their mental energy and helps them calm down.
This is a «masculine” sign, ruled by the «fiery”, warlike planet Mars. We can picture it as a warrior ready for battle. Clearly, these people are able to boldly face the struggle that awaits them in life. They can join their forces with those of other people in order to achieve their goals in life. They are proud, capable of heroism and independent. They reflect a great deal on both scientific and practical questions.
Aries indicates changeability of mood, an ambitious character, a person who is sociable but quick to anger. They are not easily subjected to another's influence, they do not like to follow other people's advice straight away. Their family affairs often turn out to be disordered. Physically they are attractive, usually of average height and average build, but strong. They have a ruddy face, chestnut curly hair, a large head, good teeth, weak knees. They feel drawn to rich or picturesque surroundings. They like hot food, but are capable of eating in moderation. Their veins are prominent and stand out strongly, or else there are scars on their body.
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and it indicates that the person born at this moment is a good strategist, commands or leads others well, and cannot bear being commanded. They handle machinery well, and sometimes achieve success in real estate, construction or economic spheres. They are capable of intense work when they are interested in something, at times capable of extreme measures, they love the arts and the refined. They usually have few children and love trips abroad.

Nakshatras in Aries
Depending on which degrees the ascendant or lagna occupies in Aries, the nakshatras also exert their influence on a person's character and destiny. An ascendant or lagna in Aries lying within 00° -13° 20′ falls into the nakshatra Ashwini. A nakshatra ruled by Ketu, it will endow the person with elegance, a clear mind and an attraction to spiritual practices.
The nakshatra Bharani, ruled by Venus, will exert its influence when the ascendant or lagna in Aries lies within 13° 20′ – 26° 40′ . It will teach the person to be patient, leading them through struggle and suffering, which will subsequently allow the individual to achieve success in any undertaking.
An ascendant or lagna in Aries lying within 26° 40′ – 00° falls into the nakshatra Krittika. A nakshatra ruled by the Sun, it will reward one with harsh, purposeful and more aggressive traits of character.

Lagna in Aries. Aries in Vedic astrology
The ram, the symbol of Aries, is famous for throwing itself without a second thought into the thick of events, ready to break through any wall with its own head. Therefore an Aries lagna may indicate a person prone to head injuries, and also one who tries to solve their problems by rational means, i.e. by intensified reflection. Such an «emphasis on the head» is explained by the fact that Aries is the first house in the natural Zodiac, and also by the fact that Mars is known for the peculiar character of its retrograde motion, which endows people under the power of this planet with special traits of behaviour. They can be strongly extroverted, because Mars itself is an extroverted planet, i.e. one that manifests itself strongly outwards. Mars, which in general has a well-known inclination towards violence and aggression, be it an accident, a quarrel or a fight, is the natural significator of accidents. This property of Mars is reinforced by the fact that Mars rules the eighth house, which also has a relation to accidents. Here it would be appropriate to recall as well that the furious, aggressive Ketu is not infrequently regarded as a co-ruler of Aries, which adds aggression to this constellation.
The majority of the characteristics of Mars are at the same time among the characteristics of pitta, the restless dosha which is under the rulership of Mars and which therefore is often predominant in Aries people. This happens, in particular, for the reason that the bright, fiery Sun is exalted on the ascendant of a chart having its lagna in Aries. The special intensity of this manifestation is connected with the fact that the Sun, a planet friendly to Mars — the owner of the first house — experiences exaltation in the first house, while being at the same time the lord of the fifth house. The powerful, impetuous impulse jointly generated by the two fiery planets, Mars and the Sun, may perhaps serve as that source of energy which feeds the innate intolerance of Aries towards anyone who does not possess the same impetuosity as they do. This trait of character, if it is insufficiently controlled, evokes in its bearer first irritation and then anger, directed against anyone who tries to hold them back.
Mars, the lord of the ascendant, is exalted in Capricorn, the tenth house of the chart (where Aries is the first house of the chart, Capricorn will always be the tenth). Therefore a person with the ascendant in Aries constantly experiences the strongest motivation and energy of achievement, they are ambitious and wish to be first in everything. The ruler of Capricorn, Saturn, is greatly weakened in the first house (in fall), and if Mars is characterised by indomitable explosive energy and Saturn by persistence, then the subjects of Aries often turn out to be weak strategists, not ready to display the same steadfastness over a long period. This is why people of this type should often be reminded that in order to achieve their desired goals in life they ought more often to make small pauses in their stormy activity, in order to see to the consolidation of the successes they have achieved.
The fact that Mars, the lord of the lagna, has its fall in Cancer, the fourth house of the chart, which rules the home and all domestic affairs, often leads to a life far from one's homeland and a disinclination to settle in one place for long. One more reason prompting Aries people to wander, like rams which keep changing their pastures, is the mutual friendship between Jupiter and Mars, because of which the concerns of the ninth and twelfth houses, ruled by Jupiter, come to the fore in the life of Aries people, and these houses determine long journeys and residence far from one's homeland.
The innate weakness of the fourth house in people with a lagna in Aries predetermines frequent disagreements with the mother, especially if the Moon, the ruler of the fourth house and the significator of the mother, is afflicted in their chart. Dissimilarity to one's own brothers and sisters and/ or separation from them is caused by the fact that Mercury, the lord of the third and sixth houses, is an enemy of Mars, which in turn acts as the significator of these two houses. This leads to a mixing — not in the best way — of the meanings of the sixth house (suffering) and the third house (brothers and sisters). Finally, since the Sun rules the fifth house — the house of progeny — and moreover is in a relationship of mutual friendship with Mars, persons born with a lagna in Aries are, as a rule, greatly concerned with leaving progeny behind them. Nevertheless they rarely have many children, because the Sun as such does not promote great fertility. In general, the natural heat of the Sun and Mars always to one degree or another limits the capacity for procreation, since the hot substance of pitta «burns» the spermatozoon or the egg cell.

Aries — is a sign of the element of fire, ruled by the energetic, competitive planet Mars. Aries is symbolised by two rams butting each other with their horns, so that Aries indicates a spirit of challenge and risk. The character of kshatriyas, of military men. This sign is movable and rewards a person with a love of wandering.
Aries — is the positive sign of Mars, the cardinal sign of fire, the first sign of the zodiac and the head of the Cosmic Man (or of the Universal Form of the Supreme Lord — personified time). Its symbol — is the ram. As sign no. 1, Aries denotes independence, strength, self-expression and a sharply expressed personal approach to life.
The Aries type — is dynamic, aggressive, tuned to competition and extremely enterprising. Aries people not infrequently live in the future, they like to make plans, but are distinguished by exceptional shrewdness and receptivity. They are characterised by a scientific cast of mind and logical thinking, they can be excellent researchers and inventors. They are independent, love adventures and display mastery in any undertaking they take up. They possess strong emotions and passions, but as a rule are able to keep them under control.
Aries natives are self-willed, impulsive and stubborn, and at times critical and self-assured. But if an Aries learns to understand themselves, they can become a good psychologist. The less developed type is prone to anger and inclined to manipulate those around them. Rudely forcing their way through life, they impose their ideas on other people and suppress them with their seething energy. The belligerence inherent in Aries natives more often manifests on the intellectual plane than through physical action. These people love to argue, but are not inclined to resort to violence.
An Aries can be egocentric and insufficiently sensitive. It is useful for them to associate with people who are unlike them and can serve as a harmonious complement. Aries natives usually serve as the initiators of a new phase of one process or another. The key to spiritual growth for an Aries — lies in honing their intellect and developing their powerful energy for the sake of discovering truth, and not for the sake of achieving worldly goals.
David Frawley — «The Astrology of the Seers»
«Jataka-Bharanam» 13:1. RESULTS OF BIRTH IN MESHA LAGNA [Aries]: A person born in Mesha-Lagna is excessively proud and arrogant, virtuous, angry, set against close people and strikes up friendships with others, earns exceptional renown and fame by their valour.
Commentary: Mesha [Aries] is also called ‘Adya’, that is, the first Rashi [sign]. Its form is a ram, a goat, and it is symbolised by this animal. Learned and experienced astrologers have described many of its characteristic qualities corresponding to the nature of the ram, the goat. It is precisely because of the nature of this animal that a person born in this Lagna displays a cruel character and, in doing anything, may be dissolute (self-willed, indulging in excessive freedom). Such people never like to interfere in the affairs of others, whatever they may be doing. Pandit Dhundhirāja, speaking of a person with Mesha Lagna, used the word ‘Chandabhimani’, that is, «subject to excessive pride, arrogance»; such people are extremely stubborn and proud. The author of the treatise ‘Jātakā-Pārijata’ also noted the pride of such a person. The primary element of this Rashi is Fire (Agni). The ruler of this Rashi is the Graha Mangala [the planet Mars]. Therefore a person with Mesha Lagna is endowed with boundless strength and energy. They take firm decisions, possess will-power, are extremely ambitious and love to progress quickly. There is dynamism in them. They develop new, original ideas and act in accordance with them. Bravery, an original and prudent intellect are clearly noticeable in them and distinguish everything they do. They become attached to any thing or to any person extremely quickly and with deep desire. According to the book ‘Hora-Ratnam’ a person born in Mesha Lagna is extremely angry and greedy, obtains the opportunity to make journeys abroad, has several children, is intelligent, jealous, has a lisping speech, their eyes are like a goat's, but they are extremely magnificent, perform special deeds, their mind is foolish and inconstant (unstable), they have immoral, vicious brothers, they are rich, conquer their enemies and so on. According to the author of ‘Mān-Sāgri’, a person born under Mesha Lagna has a cruel, terrible character, is proud of themselves, rich, performs auspicious deeds, is angry, opposes their own relatives, is valorous and pities others.
