Mars in the 9th house
The results given by Mars in the ninth house of the horoscope
The 9th house shows an interest in religion, respect for teachers and elders, and higher knowledge. Mars in the 9th house destroys all this. They are not religious and have no respect for religious values. This is the house of the father. The person forms difficult relations with his father. The father may die early or relations with him will not work out. They may engage in religious affairs only in order to show that they are religious. In their soul they may be unbelievers. Mars always has one task — to win and to be the chief! Here too it may compete with others, making large donations in order to show the public that it is kind. This is a good place for Mars if the person wants to be successful in the material world. Of course, he will have to answer for his deeds in future incarnations. He wants to have a beautiful life here and now. He thinks a great deal about women. This is the place of religion and spirituality. Therefore Mars in the 9th house does not bring the person serious injuries. Also, the 9th house shows trips. During journeys the native may receive injuries. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)
Mars (Mangala) in the 9th house
Mars in the 9th house. The loss of the father or problems in relations with him. These people are inclined towards violence and anger, nurse no respect for religion and spiritual people, lose money by investing it unsuccessfully, and have conflicts with the authorities. (Indubala)
Mars in the 9th house: he holds free views and morals. He considers that marriage is first of all a spiritual union, therefore sexual relations recede into the background. With an afflicted Mars long-distance trips should be avoided; accidents abroad are possible. (Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)
“Bhrigu Sutra” 3.72-74
A person who has Mars in the 9th house of the horoscope will lose his father early. He will be unfortunate. When Mars is exalted or is in its own sign, the owner of the horoscope will have illicit relations with the wife of his preceptor.
Comments:
Since the 9th house indicates the father, the presence of Mars in it speaks of the early death of the father of the owner of the horoscope. Besides this, the 9th house is the house of fortune and prosperity, and its affliction by the presence of Mars will be reflected badly on these indications. Only in the following cases will fortune not turn away from the person:
- when the signs of Aries or Scorpio rise, and Mars is in the 9th house as the lord of the lagna — the lagnadhipati;
- the sign of Sagittarius rises, Mars is the lord of the 5th house;
- the sign of Cancer rises, Mars is the yoga karaka (planet of strength) and lord of the 5th and 10th houses;
- the sign of Leo rises, Mars is the yoga karaka and lord of the 4th and 9th houses;
- the sign of Pisces rises, Mars is the lord of the 2nd and 9th houses.
The placements mentioned in points 3, 4 and 5 form strong raja yogas and bring renown and wealth. Mars is a powerful malefic planet, and its presence in influential positions (the houses of the triad or of the quadrant) speaks of negative karma from a past life and, accordingly, of ruinous inclinations in this life or great sufferings as an atonement of karma. According to the Vedic tradition, to seduce the wife of a teacher, preceptor, patron or king is a grave offence, and its commission entails great negative consequences. By virtue of the fact that the 9th house is the house of the spiritual teacher, the presence in it of a ruinous, passionate Mars may explain the assertion of the great sage. Besides this, Bhrigu Muni emphasises that it is precisely a strong Mars, that is, one placed in its own signs or in its sign of exaltation, that serves as an indicator of heavy karma. We may add that if there is an aspect from Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, the predictions are only strengthened.
The horoscope of the last Russian emperor Nicholas the Second illustrates the placement of Mars in the 9th house.
Other opinions concerning Mars in the 9th house:
“Brihat Jataka” — dubious principles and impious deeds.
“Phaladipika” — People will envy the owner of the horoscope, while he himself will become the cause of grief and suffering for others. His father will die early.
“Saravali” — a person who has Mars in the 9th house of the horoscope will be base, dishonest, quick-tempered, inclined towards violence, atheistic and amoral, but will be able to obtain patronage from the king or the government.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — cruelty, intelligence, wealth and luck.
Note: All the classical texts except the “Chamatkar Chintamani” ascribe negative characteristics to the placement of Mars in the 9th house. The favourable results mentioned in the “Chamatkar Chintamani” are to be expected only in the cases described in the commentaries.

THE RESULTS OF THE PLACEMENT OF MANGALA IN THE 9TH BHAVA
Mangala in the 9th Bhava gives the person an inclination towards violence, much fame, but little support from the government, little wealth, and he is not very virtuous (holy).
Comments: Mangala [Mars] is considered a Graha [planet] representing insolence (arrogance), violence, madness and similar instincts. And since the purity or impurity of the heart and reason are examined from the 9th Bhava, mental relations and tendencies must also be examined from this Bhava. Therefore the author said that Mangala in the 9th Bhava will definitely increase the person’s tendency towards violence. As a consequence of the placement of Mangala in the 9th Bhava, the person will be valorous (energetic), will make enterprising trips, possesses a strong and healthy body and creates his own future himself. If there is an influence of a Sattvic Graha (for example Guru [Jupiter]) on Mangala in this position, or if Mangala is in the Rashi of a Sattvic Graha, then the person will perform Vedic Yajnas and will venerate Fire <Agni>.
