The 5th house shows intellect and education. Mars does not want to study and develop, therefore Mars in the 5th house gives problems in study. This is the house of children; the place where children are conceived — that is, the womb. Fiery Mars burns the sexual cells. High temperature does not allow the male and female sexual cells to meet and fertilise normally. If a woman becomes pregnant, she may have a miscarriage. If she is able to give birth, it will more likely be a boy, and such a child may often be ill or die early. This especially concerns the first child. The negative influence is strengthened in fiery and masculine signs. Mars in the 5th house gives excessive sexual passion, scandalous and unstable romances. Mars (Mangala) in the 5th house
Mars in the 5th house. A high social position and the possibility of suddenly losing it. There may be problems with childbearing or the loss of a child. These people may commit immoral deeds; they are inclined towards games of chance and towards the use of intoxicants. Mars in the 5th house: a sportsman, an athlete, an athletic build. He likes to take risks and to fuss with children. In a woman’s chart it indicates problems with childbearing and miscarriages. An afflicted Mars gives scandals. During the period of Mars it is better to abstain from games of chance. “Bhrigu Sutra” 3.34-45
Poverty, an absence of children or a small number of them await a person who has Mars occupying the 5th house of the horoscope. He will become immoral and will be in bad standing with the government. Possibly he will suffer from wounds or cuts in the 6th year of life. He will become very intelligent and perceptive, but untruthful. If Mars is placed in its own sign or in its sign of exaltation, the owner of the horoscope will have many children, will be able to occupy a high position in the government and will have many enemies. If Mars is in conjunction with a ruinous planet, the loss of children is to be expected. The owner of the horoscope may suffer from mental illnesses. A person who has Mars in his horoscope conjunct with the lord of the 8th house will be brave but inclined towards impious deeds. He may have no children of his own and may adopt another’s child.
Comments:
The 5th house is the indicator of children, intellect and morality. Being the ninth in relation to the 9th house, it determines the fortune and prosperity and the religious inclinations of the owner of the horoscope. If Mars is in the 5th house, all these characteristics will be destroyed. But with a fortunate placement of Mars
very favourable results may manifest.
If Mars is in Aries, then the lagna is in Sagittarius, and Mars will be the lord of the 5th and 12th houses. With Mars in its own sign the negative points of the rulership of the 12th house will not be felt and only favourable results will follow. If Mars is in Scorpio, the rising sign will be Cancer, for which Mars is the yoga karaka, the planet of strength. Mars will be the lord of the 5th and 10th houses, and its presence in the 5th house will bring a high position, a developed intellect and fame for the children.
Besides this, being in the 5th house, Mars influences the 11th house, the house of acquisitions and income. If Mars is strong and favourable for the lagna (in the case where Mars is placed in Aries or Scorpio) the owner of such a position will own considerable property.
We take the liberty of not sharing Bhrigu Muni’s view that Mars, being placed in Capricorn in the 5th house, will give a good result. In that case the rising sign will be Virgo and, in accordance with the principle of lordship, Mars becomes an unfavourable lord and ruler of the 3rd and 8th houses. In that case one can hardly expect “a large number of children and the attainment of a high position”. However, in the cases of Gemini or Capricorn rising, Mars will be the lord of the 11th house, aspecting its own house from the 5th. With such positions of Mars a good financial position may be expected. With the lagna in Pisces (Mars is the lord of the 2nd and 9th houses), good predictions regarding finances may also be given.
The horoscope of the great Russian writer F.M. Dostoevsky is an example of the placement of Mars in the 5th house.
Other opinions concerning Mars in the 5th house:
“Brihat Jataka” — the owner of the horoscope may have no children or may lose them.
“Phaladipika” — a person who has Mars placed in the 5th house of the horoscope will be childless, unreasonable and will become a slanderer.
“Saravali” — an absence of wealth, happiness and children. An inconstant mind, an inclination towards slander, immorality, malice and baseness.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — the owner of the horoscope will have increased acidity of the stomach. He will be impious, and his wife may have difficulties with childbearing.
Note: All the authoritative sources note only unfavourable characteristics of this position of Mars. However, as Bhrigu Muni indicates and our practical experience confirms, Mars in the 5th house may give good results.

THE RESULTS OF THE PLACEMENT OF MANGALA IN THE 5TH BHAVA
If at birth Mangala is placed in the 5th Bhava, then the person is troubled by Kapha Dosha and Vata Dosha. He experiences a lack of happiness from wife, friend and son; his judgements change to the directly opposite, that is, he is incapable of thinking correctly.
Comments: As a consequence of the placement of Mangala [Mars] in the 5th Bhava [house] the person’s father does not live long, since this is the 8th Bhava from the Bhava of the father. If some malefic Graha [planet] aspects Mangala, then there is a likelihood of the early death of the father. Mangala in the 5th Bhava is considered unfavourable for the health and longevity of the person’s offspring. In a woman’s birth chart it forms a yoga [combination] causing abortion. There is also a likelihood of illnesses connected with the womb, and of disorders of the menstrual cycle. Mangala in the 5th Bhava will not give the ability to engage in commerce (business); the person is incapable of conducting negotiations or concluding deals. If such a Mangala is in conjunction with the ruler of the 6th Bhava, it will cause a disease of the brain.
