This is a hostile sign, and if Mercury is not close to Mars, that is, if they have no temporary friendship, then Mercury finds itself in a hostile, fiery, very movable sign. The energy of air falls into fire; such people are the best arguers and orators. They speak very well and quickly. They have a critical cast of mind and a very quick mind.
The people are very mobile. They grasp things very quickly and cannot listen to monotonous explanations. In general, Mercury aspected by Jupiter, or a joint aspect of Jupiter and Mercury, gives such a person the ability to learn independently (it is even more convenient for him that way). In that case it really is better for the person to study on his own; there is no need to attend too many courses of any kind.
The classical Vedic astrologers write in their commentaries that this sign often creates atheists. But why atheists? If we take the orthodox Vedic society that existed before the Kali Yuga, then a person with strongly independent thinking, who argued with the brahmins and the teachers, was perceived as an atheist.
This is not a bad placement, but one must work on oneself. There is too much fire, and if there are other indicators of the fire element in the chart, then such a person is too hot-tempered and irritable. But this is pitta; if it is in goodness, the person can grasp the deepest concepts. This is quite a strong placement if the person conquers anger.
Mercury receives dig-bala — directional strength — in the first house, and this strengthens it greatly in Aries.

RESULTS OF THE PLACEMENT OF MERCURY IN ARIES
19.37. If Buddha is placed in Mesha, then the person will be foolish, unstable, always ready to quarrel, devoid of kindness, false and unsuccessful in attaining his goals.
Commentary: Buddha (Mercury) is the most sensitive or «receptive» planet. It reveals its favourable or unfavourable results and qualities through the planet with which it is joined, or through the sign/house in which it is placed. Therefore it is quite natural that when Mercury is placed in Aries, the person will have an unstable, quarrelsome character, be devoid of kindness and possess the mind of a vicious person. Buddha will not give the person the qualities of diligence, of an inclination to struggle, of persistence. Therefore the author's opinion that Mercury, being in Aries, will not be useful in attaining goals seems to be true. But such a Mercury is often favourable for attaining goals in the field of education, because Buddha is the karaka (significator) of activity connected with the intellect.

RESULTS OF THE ASPECT OF THE SUN UPON MERCURY IN ARIES OR SCORPIO: If Buddha is placed in Mesha or Vrishchika and is aspected by Surya, then the person will be loved by his brothers/sisters, he will speak the truth, will receive the patronage of the king and will possess a sense of his own dignity.

RESULTS OF THE ASPECT OF THE MOON UPON MERCURY IN ARIES OR SCORPIO: If Buddha is placed in Mesha or Vrishchika and is aspected by Chandra, then the person will be very interested in songs, dances and the like, will have sexual desires, will love women, will be happy through a vehicle and servants, and will be twisted (crippled).

RESULTS OF THE ASPECT OF MARS UPON MERCURY IN ARIES OR SCORPIO: If Buddha is placed in Mesha or Vrishchika and is aspected by Mangala, then the person will be a favourite of the king, exceedingly wealthy, very courageous, skilful in the arts, always ready to enter into a quarrel, and will often feel strong hunger.
18:161. RESULTS OF THE ASPECT OF JUPITER UPON MERCURY IN ARIES OR SCORPIO: If Guru aspects Buddha placed in Mesha or Vrishchika, then the person will be intelligent, with melodious speech, endowed with comfort, a wife, children and a cheerful character.
