Paka Lagna – is the house in which the lord of the 1st house is located. Since the 1st house is often called the “Lagna”, the lord of the 1st house is called the “Lagnesha” (lit. “the lord of the Lagna”). The position of the Lagnesha will show the natural sphere of interests of the personality and the place of maximum investment of energy. The Paka Lagna becomes the native’s principal field of activity and indicates the themes on which he concentrates his life and through which he realises himself.

The Lagnesha in the 1st house — this is a very good placement. For example, for a Leo ascendant the Lagnesha is the Sun. The Sun is in the 1st house in its own sign, and the house will prosper. But such a placement usually makes the person egoistic and self-absorbed, and even if such people are very kind, they subconsciously do something for themselves. Therefore a good yajna for such people will be service to other people. Their activity must be directed to the good of others; they must make those around them happy, while telling no one about it. In this combination the ruler of the Lagna is in the bhava of vision, therefore the native is endowed with great powers of observation and investigation. His conclusions are capable of bringing far-reaching results; his plans are successful. His eyes possess the ability to see and understand laws, because the 2nd bhava is the bhava of the right eye.
The lord of the 1st house in the 3rd house:

He will have at the least an interest, and at the most a talent, and a successful career in music, drama, dance or literature is possible. It is considered that such a person will be free-thinking and will occupy a respected position in society. The physical capabilities of the body will be most manifest in the 3rd bhava, since the Lagna and its ruler represent the body. If the ruler of the Lagna is placed in the 3rd bhava, then the native requires more food, and his diet will be fuller. In the case where the Lagna is Mithuna [Gemini] and at the same time the ruler of the Lagna is in the 3rd bhava, then the native will begin to earn less money from the age of 40 or 45. His vitality and strength fade. With the Kumbha [Aquarius] Lagna, when the ruler of the Lagna occupies the 3rd bhava, Shani [Saturn] will be in its rashi [sign] of debilitation and therefore results opposite to those indicated in this shloka will be noted.

The Lagnesha in the 4th house: such a person will have a very good energetic bond with his mother; he is very attached to his mother (the heart, the person’s aspirations are in the house of the mother) and to his parents and his home in general. As a rule, such people are homebodies, spend much time at home and do not like changes of place. Even if they are, for example, Aries (a movable sign), then with such a placement of the Lagnesha they grow tired of business trips; they need a place to which they can return and rest. These people own, as a rule, good real estate. They have a good education — it is considered that they have good opportunities to obtain a doctoral degree, since the 4th house is responsible for the doctoral degree (in some schools). The 4th house is a kendra, and any planet in a kendra is greatly strengthened, and if the Lagnesha is moreover in exaltation — this is an altogether splendid placement, since the Lagna is greatly strengthened. Especially if the Lagnesha is a favourable planet, then the person has good friends and surroundings throughout life. In many classes I have immediately asked people who have such a placement: “Are you attached to your mother?” Almost always the answer was very confident — “yes”. Comments: When the ruler of the Lagna occupies the 4th bhava [house], then the native will not only be voluptuous, he will also become very sensitive mentally. The 4th bhava is connected with the mind and with psychological results. The Lagna in itself is the body. The psychology of sexual relations is quite close to the body. Therefore the native may be voluptuous or lustful. Such a person takes particular care of his body. He is always absorbed in adorning his body and improving his appearance.
The favourable results of this shloka will not be observed when the Lagna is Mesha [Aries] or Makara [Capricorn]. With these Lagnas the results will be changed to entirely the opposite, because the ruler of the Lagna will be in its rashi [sign] of debilitation if it is placed in the 4th bhava.
The lord of the 1st house in the 5th house
The lord of the 1st in the 5th – the native has inclinations towards management, possesses a strong ego, loves games (including games of chance), is inclined towards self-education; children are an important theme for him, he has a creative mind. The lord of a house of dharma in another house of dharma – favourable in the sense of a strong dharma, reasonableness, erudition, successful investments, wealth, happiness, luck, respect, a high status or renown, faith and devotion to God, a knowledge of mantras, an interest in religious practices, high moral standards, noble qualities, dignity, modesty. Profits from the government or from politics. A large credit from the previous incarnation; a predestination to follow the same path as in the previous life. The Lagnesha in the 5th house: these people are very attached to their children, love them very much, and usually they are themselves very good parents. Even if it is a man, he cares very much for the children; children are very important to him, and he has a close energetic bond with his children. Such people are recommended to live with their children, if there are no afflictions in the chart. In the abstract horoscope the 1st house is the element of Fire (Dharma), the 5th house is also the element of Fire (Dharma), and when an exchange of elements takes place, the houses of Dharma improve. If there is an exchange between the houses of Dharma in the chart, then this means that such a person has very good karma from a past life — purva punya. Usually this person is from birth very pious and religious and is interested in spiritual practices. The Lagnesha in the 5th house is a great blessing, since the 1st house, the 5th house and the Lagnesha all prosper, since any planet falling into the 5th house begins to prosper, and the Lagnesha doubly so. A small exception is for Taurus, since their Lagnesha — Venus — falls in the 5th house, and here there will be negative effects too, but the more neutralisations there are, the more favourable moments (we examined this in more detail in the textbook “How to Become a Seer. A Self-Study Guide to Real Astrology”). The owner of the horoscope may have many romances; he is himself romantic and will receive much love from his marriage partner. Such a person makes other people happy. He has a sharp mind and intellect. Such people make good teachers and diplomats. Comments: The above-mentioned results are connected with offspring. They are, as a rule, true in the case of the Vrishabha [Taurus] and Karka [Cancer] Lagnas, because with these Lagnas the ruler of the Lagna, placed in the 5th bhava [house], falls into its rashi [sign] of debilitation. With the Mesha [Aries], Simha [Leo], Kanya [Virgo], Tula [Libra], Vrishchika [Scorpio], Dhanu [Sagittarius], Makara [Capricorn], Kumbha [Aquarius] and Mina [Pisces] Lagnas these results are found in those natives in whose birth charts there is any ruinous influence on the 5th bhava. In the case of the Dhanu [Sagittarius] and Mina [Pisces] Lagnas even a small unfavourable influence gives with certainty the above-mentioned results with regard to offspring. The reason is that with these Lagnas Guru [Jupiter] is placed in the 5th bhava, and it is well known that Guru destroys the results of the bhava it occupies: ‘Sthan-Hani-Karo-Jiva’ — Guru is the destroyer of (the results of) the bhava occupied by it”. If Guru is placed in the 5th bhava, then two factors connected with offspring (the 5th bhava and the karaka of the 5th bhava) are joined together. Therefore even the smallest ruinous influence on the 5th bhava harms both these factors simultaneously.
The lord of the 1st house in the 6th house
The lord of the 1st in the 6th – struggle is an important theme for the native. He may be connected with politics, medicine, the courts or the security services. He loves sport and competition. (Vasily Tushkin)

For Taurus and Scorpio ascendants such a position relieves them of illnesses and endows them with money and a high status, but on the other hand it activates ill-wishers. The Lagnesha in the 6th house. It is said that debts, illnesses and enemies will overwhelm this person from birth, but he will have the strength to overcome all this. This person will work more in a subordinate position than be an obvious leader; he will be a good executor. He will be concentrated on his work, on his service. He may also achieve much in medicine and in the martial arts. Such a person is good at service work or meticulous work, work with fine details, where a certain pedantry is required. For a person whose Lagnesha is in the 6th house it is especially important to watch his health all his life, to lead a healthy way of life, to eat correctly and to follow healthy methods and natural means of treatment, to drink herbal infusions (chemistry usually does not help such people), since the 6th house is the house of natural treatment. For them chemical medicines are even more harmful than for others. And very often they may be interested in alternative medicine. From my experience: I do not remember mighty giants with such a placement, but neither do I remember very weak and ill people, if there are no other placements in the chart. In the case where the ruler of the Lagna occupies the 6th bhava, the native is deprived of physical happiness (health). If the ruler of the Lagna is under the influence of a malefic graha and there is no benefic drishti [aspect], then the native will be troubled by enemies. (“Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra” 26.6)
Comments: If the ruler of the Lagna falls into the 6th bhava [house], then such a person becomes sickly, because in this case the body is connected with illnesses. Some Astrologers speak of the 6th bhava as the bhava of health. There is a grain of truth in this statement. It has been found that if the ruler of the Lagna is placed in the 6th bhava and receives no ruinous influences, then the native loves exercise, training and wrestling, and practises Yoga; thus his body may become strong and may remain healthy. If the Lagna is Vrishabha [Taurus] or Vrishchika [Scorpio], then the ruler of the Lagna, Shukra [Venus] or Mangala [Mars], will be placed in the 6th bhava. They will be in their own rashi [sign], therefore the native will be healthy. If the Lagna is Tula [Libra], then the ruler of the Lagna, Shukra, will be exalted in the 6th bhava. Therefore such a person will enjoy the happiness of being healthy.
The lord of the 1st house in the 7th house
The lord of the 1st in the 7th – the native realises himself through relationships, partnership and marriage. He may have many business trips abroad. The marriage and business partner is an important figure in his life. (Vasily Tushkin)

The Lagnesha in the 7th house. Such a person is usually concentrated on marriage and on partners. But if the Lagnesha is weakened, then the owner of the horoscope will be excessively attached to family life; it is important for him to find himself in marriage, and very often for this reason the marriage may be delayed. This is a very strong placement, since the 7th house is a very strong kendra, and any planet there is greatly strengthened. From the 7th house the Lagnesha aspects its own 1st house, and the Lagna is thereby greatly strengthened and prospers. If a person has Mars in the sign of Venus or Venus in the sign of Mars, then he has a very strong sexuality (the 7th house is responsible for sexual activity). As a rule, if there are no afflictions, such a person is very successful in work connected with business; God sends him good partners, a good husband/wife and so on. Usually such people interact well with other people. Such a person is successful in business if he engages in business together with a partner.
If the lord of the 1st house is in its fall in the 7th house — such a person is from a past life excessively attached to the affairs of the 7th house (to sex, to personal relationships; he cannot love because of a strong attachment to his partner, he is afraid to leave his partner and lives with him out of fear of loss and so on). If the ruler of the Lagna is a malefic graha and occupies the 7th bhava, then the native’s wife will not live (long). If the ruler of the Lagna is a benefic graha, then the native will become an aimless wanderer, will encounter want, will be ascetic (and dejected); or he may become a king (if the graha is strong). The lord of the 1st in the 8th – the native passes through many crises, illnesses, losses, humiliations and insults in life. Secretive, interested in mysteries, research and occult knowledge; he may be connected with the theme of death (funeral services, insurance, wills). An expert in games of chance, stingy, light-fingered, lives long but is often ill, depraved, starts secret romances, receives an inheritance and financial benefits from marriage, has ruinous and vile habits, is inclined towards suicide. The Lagnesha is weakened by being in the 8th house (since the 8th house is a strong dusthana), while the 8th house, on the contrary, improves. Thus the 1st house loses out with such a placement, and the affairs of the 1st house are weakened — this tells on the health and the immunity; such people have, as a rule, a weak spine and are unsure of themselves. But the 8th house prospers meanwhile. The person may be unattractive in appearance, but sexually attractive to the opposite sex. He may have benefits from inheritance, from wills, and wealth from the spouse. A Lagnesha in the 8th house unaspected by anyone may arouse an interest in esotericism, parapsychology and mysticism. Such a person will be perceptive, he will have a talent for psychology and so on. If the Lagnesha is unafflicted and is connected with favourable planets, or aspected by them — such a person will have a most profound talent for parapsychology, psychology, esotericism and spiritual things, and a stunning intuition. If the Lagnesha is connected with unfavourable planets or aspected by them — then the person will commit actions unworthy of the laws of public morality, sinful immoral deeds. If the ruler of the Lagna occupies the 8th bhava, then the native will be ‘Siddha-Vidya-Vishareda’ — “possessing the knowledge of secret (occult) powers”, sickly, light-fingered or thievish, extremely angry, will be a gambler or a swindler and will be inclined to go to other men’s wives. Comments: The 8th bhava [house] is regarded as the bhava of hidden (supernatural) knowledge. One may say with certainty that the native will have knowledge of secret powers when the ruler of the Lagna is placed in the 8th bhava. It is also the bhava of immoral and ruinous habits. Therefore it is also well founded that such a person will be inclined towards theft, towards gambling for money and towards other men’s wives. The placement of the ruler of the Lagna in the 8th bhava is regarded by all astrologers as very ruinous for health. In the case where Karka [Cancer] is the Lagna, and the ruler of the Lagna occupies the 8th bhava, there is a fear of the death of the child in infancy. Sickliness is the general characteristic with the other Lagnas. In the case where Mesha [Aries] or Tula [Libra] is the Lagna, then the ruler of the Lagna will be in its own rashi [sign] in the 8th bhava. Therefore there will be no harm for such a person. But if there is an influence of malefic grahas [planets], then the harm will be doubled, because in this case the ruler of the Lagna, the 8th bhava and the ruler of the 8th bhava will be afflicted; and this will definitely mean illness and an unnatural (violent) death. With the Dhanu [Sagittarius] Lagna the ruler of the Lagna in the 8th bhava will be in its rashi of exaltation, therefore the ruinous results will be reduced to a minimum.
The lord of the 1st house in the 9th house

He will be a favourite of people, because his moral values will be acceptable to all. This bhava gives the person the results of his deeds (“karma”) in previous births. In the case of the Vrishchika [Scorpio] Lagna there will be opposite results, because with this Lagna the ruler of the Lagna will be Mangala [Mars], which will fall into its rashi [sign] of debilitation. Such a Mangala will bring the native a bad reputation, failures, the opposition and resistance of people, illnesses, pessimistic moods, unspiritual (atheistic) thinking and the like. The combination will be very favourable and beneficial also for those born with the Mesha [Aries] Lagna, because the ruler of the Lagna will be Mangala [Mars]. It will be in the 10th bhava in its rashi [sign] of exaltation and will also possess “strength due to direction” (the strength of ‘Dig Bala’). In the case of the Mithuna [Gemini] Lagna the results obtained will be mediocre. They will rather be the opposite of beneficial, because the ruler of the Lagna, Buddha [Mercury], will be in debilitation in the 10th bhava. With the Kanya [Virgo] or Mina [Pisces] Lagna the ruler of the Lagna in the 10th bhava is in its own rashi, therefore it will undoubtedly show excellent results. These people are very ambitious; they have many desires. Such a person will also achieve what he desires; his ambitions are satisfied, since the 11th house is the house of the highest manifestation of Kama, the highest manifestation of the energy of air, and therefore when the Lagnesha is there, all the significations of the 11th house prosper. The results (described in the shloka) will be more noticeable in the case of the Vrishabha [Taurus] and Karka [Cancer] Lagnas, because with these Lagnas the ruler of the Lagna will be in its rashi [sign] of exaltation in the 11th bhava [house], while in the case of the Mina [Pisces] Lagna the ruler of the Lagna, Guru [Jupiter], will be debilitated in the 11th bhava, and therefore it will give ruinous results.
The lord of the 1st house in the 12th house
The lord of the 1st in the 12th – he is inclined towards solitude and meditation, is often lonely, lives far from his place of birth, is interested in outer space and the higher worlds. He may work in the sphere of charity, import/export, or the letting of premises. (Vasily Tushkin)

With such a placement in the chart the personality is lost; the person is unsure of himself, it is hard for him to say “no” and still harder to ask others for something. But this is a very good placement for the spiritual life; they have a great interest in the spiritual. Such people need to practise yoga or similar practices, possibly connected with asceticism. But in most people with such a placement a strong withdrawal into the spiritual takes place; they strive for the spiritual, but they do not always have enough unconditional love, because they have no respect and love for themselves. The placement of the Lagnesha in the 12th house is not very good for the appearance and health of the owner of the horoscope. Such a person very much likes to make donations. Among these people there are many altruists and ideological fanatics; the spirit of self-sacrifice is strong in them. But here there may also be another extreme — these people may sacrifice themselves for the sake of those close to them, completely forgetting about themselves. This person feels an interest in self-knowledge and self-realisation. It is said that at the end of life such a person comes to spiritual renunciation (in spiritual cultures). The end of life is intended for self-knowledge; in the last years of life we should be in renunciation of the world. One may go into a monastery, or one may immerse oneself in the spiritual life at home, live more solitarily, pray, and prepare spiritually for the next life. At the end of life much can be made up for by the purification of the soul, by repentance and forgiveness. It is considered that such people have many losses in life. They need to come to terms with the thought that losses cannot be avoided, and to take this calmly. It is also said that such people will have a very high next life. Such people may move abroad (overseas); it is also considered that they receive energy when they fly overseas, since the 12th house is responsible for unexplored lands. In other words, distant journeys are very favourable for these people. It is considered that they will be sexually satisfied, and theoretically they will have good bedrooms. Since from the 12th house the Lagnesha will aspect the 6th house (the house of illnesses, enemies and debts), the significations of the 6th house improve, and such a person will defeat all illnesses, debts and enemies. The basis of such a placement is that the person loses his personality. (For Aquarius the loss of personality is minimal, since its Saturn in the 12th house falls into its own sign). If such a person works on himself, he can quite easily rid himself of egoism. For the material life, however, this is not the best placement. From my experience it is not necessarily so that the person has many losses, but there are problems with the spine (pains, curvature) and to one degree or another a lack of self-confidence and softness are manifest. He is deprived of happiness in marriage, of wealth, family and health. He is in the grip of pessimism. It is noted that such a native has some inadequacy of the eyes or an eye disease. Although he is endowed with a long life, his death is sudden, and he dies far from home. The native does not suffer from ruinous results if he is born with the Kumbha [Aquarius] Lagna, because the ruler of the Lagna occupies its own rashi if it is placed in the 12th bhava.
