Jupiter in the 3rd house — marana avastha
The placement of planets in certain houses leads to their strong weakening. They lose their vitality and, consequently, become incapable of manifesting their functional and natural characteristics. Such a position is known as the marana avastha of a planet, which in literal translation means “a state similar to death”. The planets themselves, being so placed, become Marana Karakas, or significators of death, and bring great devastation into the native's life.
When such a planet is in conjunction with a malefic or hostile planet, and/or is aspected by it, or is in the sign of its fall, it will cause great grief.
The dasha of the sign in which the Marana Karaka is placed will bring devastation into the native's life, which will be the consequence of a rupture of the relationships denoted by the natural, the functional, or both together, significations of that planet.
The 3rd house in the classics of Jyotish is the house of aggression, of the human instincts (procreation, survival), of courage and of death (according to Jaimini), and Mars is its karaka. Rahu is exalted in this house in the natural Zodiac. Jupiter by its nature is a peace-loving planet, the personification of harmony, universal brotherhood and wisdom. When Jupiter is in the 3rd house, it acquires the character of Mars and cannot manifest its natural functions. Therefore Jupiter in the 3rd house is depleted, and Mars is magnified. Jupiter, being the karaka of dharma, feels very uncomfortable in the house that is the karaka of the human instincts, because Jupiter personifies the higher hypostasis of the human being, and it is extremely difficult for it to manifest its natural results in this house.
Jupiter is the karaka of Prana, or the life force. In the 3rd house of death this life force is diminished. One can also observe the polarity of Rahu and Jupiter. Everywhere that Rahu is strong, Jupiter is weak.
Jupiter in the 3rd house: long-lived, proud of his intellect, has good analytical abilities, is well known. Marana avastha. If Jupiter is in an apoklima (the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th houses) — the early years of life are happy. (Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)
“Bhrigu Sutra” 5.13-18
A person with Jupiter in the 3rd house of the horoscope will become very clever and decisive. Along with these qualities he will be characterised by extreme stinginess. He will have many brothers, and in the 38th year of his life he will leave his relatives and will travel a great deal. If the lord of the 3rd house is strong, the brothers of the owner of the horoscope will live a long life. In the case of a conjunction of the lord of the 3rd house with an inauspicious planet, the owner of the horoscope will be impatient, foolish and poor. The loss of his brothers awaits him.
Comments:
The 3rd house is the house of courage, of decisiveness, and also of mental and literary abilities. The gyana-karaka Jupiter, being in this house, indicates people of a philosophical mind with a pronounced intellect, inclined towards literary activity. However their manner of communication with other people is coloured by
Mars (the karaka, or significator of the 3rd house) and becomes sharp, coarse.
Jupiter from the 3rd house influences the 7th, 9th and 11th houses and, in this way, brings the owner of the horoscope a happy family life, abilities in jurisprudence, financial profits and acquaintances with highly placed people.
Other opinions concerning Jupiter in the 3rd house:
“Brihat Jataka” — a person with such a position of Jupiter will be very stingy.
“Phaladipika” — a bad character, dubious principles, stinginess and humiliation. But the brother of the owner of the horoscope will attain a high position.
“Saravali” — a person who has Jupiter in the 3rd house of the horoscope will have to endure public humiliations and to be entirely under the power of his wife. He will be characterised by stinginess and dubious moral principles. He will be the youngest of the brothers.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — the owner of the horoscope will receive happiness from his brothers, but will be ungrateful and disloyal. He will have no friends. And although fortune will accompany him, all the same he will not earn as much wealth as he wants.
Note: All the authors note stinginess as a trait of the character of a person who has Jupiter in the 3rd house of the horoscope. However the bad characteristics described by the “Saravali” and the “Phaladipika” will manifest only in the case of an affliction of Jupiter.

The results of the placement of Jupiter (Guru) in the 3rd house
In the case of the placement of Guru in the 3rd Bhava the person is deprived of courtesy and magnanimity, stingy and ungrateful, does not receive the love and affection of his wife and sons, he has a lack of appetite and a weak body.
Comments: If Guru [Jupiter] in the 3rd Bhava [house] is weakened and is in an inauspicious Rashi [sign], then the person will be ungenerous, stingy and with little wealth; he is ungrateful and does not express gratitude for the good done to him by others. Guru from the 3rd Bhava aspects the 9th Bhava. Therefore the person makes many pilgrimages. He creates his own destiny by the power of his own mind. But because of his excessive ambition he does not feel satisfaction. Such a person is interested in writing, he is thoughtful, intellectual and wise, performs his work by intelligent means and is inclined towards spirituality.
