The Sun in the 2nd house

Surya (the Sun) in the second house

The Sun in the 2nd house: Strength of character, calmness, persistence, moderation in food, erudition, an average financial position. These people are able to work hard and to support a large family. They speak proudly and impressively, and their appearance is significant. They live independently of their parents, but receive financial help from them. (Indubala)

The Sun in the second house:  skilful handling of material resources, abilities in science, wealth earned by one’s own labour; lawsuits, a quarrelsome character, insubordination to the authorities, poor health and expenditure on treatment. (Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)

The Sun in the 2nd house does not give favourable results. Such a person chatters a lot. This is the house of family life; the native wants to be the leader in the family, and on this ground quarrels with his wife may arise.

Such a Sun gives diseases of the eyes, especially when it is under the aspect of malefics. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)

“Bhrigu Sutra” 1.22-32

The Sun in the 2nd house speaks of a disease of the oral cavity. In his 25th year of life the owner of the horoscope will be subjected to punishment on the part of the government, the consequence of which will be a loss of prosperity. This may be avoided with the Sun placed in Aries or in Leo. If the Sun is conjunct with a malefic planet, the owner of the horoscope will have eye diseases, poor health and little knowledge of the shastras [scriptures]. With a favourable aspect of the Sun all the negative points are removed, and the owner of the horoscope will become a wealthy man. A conjunction of the Sun with Mercury in the 2nd house may indicate stammering. If the lord of the 2nd house is placed in its sign of exaltation, then the owner of the horoscope will be eloquent, splendidly educated, versed in the shastras and will have good eyesight. Such a placement will lead to the arising of a raja yoga, the result of which will be a high position, fame and wealth.

Comments:

Affliction of the Sun in the 2nd house by unfavourable planets speaks of poor health, since the Sun characterises the vital forces of the organism. In the medical respect the 2nd house denotes the eyesight, the throat and the oral cavity. The placement of an unfavourable
Sun in the 2nd house will cause the corresponding illnesses, but if the Sun has a good aspect, then the disease is easily diagnosed and yields to medical treatment. Stammering is possible only with the “combustion” of Mercury, that is, when it is placed within 5 degrees of the Sun.

The unfavourable points connected with the placement of the Sun in the 2nd house are somewhat neutralised if the 2nd house is under the influence of Jupiter and Venus. Besides this, the author draws particular attention to the placement of the lord of the 2nd house. Its placement
in houses other than the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th is favourable, while exaltation in a sign will lead to material prosperity and fame. A splendid example of the placement of the Sun in the 2nd house is the horoscope of the celebrated poet, painter, philosopher and
politician Rabindranath Tagore.

Other opinions concerning the Sun in the 2nd house:

“Brihat Jataka” — untold riches are to be expected, but the owner of the horoscope will lose them as a consequence of a fine imposed by the government, and will suffer from diseases of the face.

“Phaladipika” — the owner of the horoscope will be uneducated, immodest and not wealthy, and will also have speech defects.

“Saravali” — the owner of the horoscope will own horned cattle and servants. Diseases of the oral cavity await him. He will lose fame and comfort, and will acquire wealth from the king or from thieves by dubious methods.

“Chamatkar Chintamani” — a person who has the Sun occupying the 2nd house of the horoscope will become a scholar. He will own cows, horses and elephants. Quarrels with the members of his family because of his wife await him. All his efforts to increase his wealth will be in vain.

Note: All the authoritative sources note the unfavourable influence of the Sun on the manifestation of the characteristics of the 2nd house, while the “Bhrigu Sutra” also considers the positive points of this placement.

The results of the placement of the Sun in the second house

If Surya is placed in the 2nd Bhava, then the person has no wealth, offspring (a son) or first-class means of transport; he lacks intellect, envies virtuous people and lives in another person’s house.

Comments: There are various opinions among experienced astrologers regarding the results of Surya in the 2nd Bhava. Thus in the treatise “Jataka Parijata” Vaidyanatha says: “A person in whose birth chart Surya is placed in the 2nd Bhava is endowed with jewels, gold and silver; he also has a talent for rhetoric and wit, and by his courteous behaviour he wins the respect even of his enemy.”
In order to make a prediction about the results of a Graha on the basis of its placement in a particular Bhava, it is necessary to look also at which Rashi [sign of the zodiac] it is placed in. But the author of this book has described this in the chapter on the results of the placement of the planets in the signs (Rashi Phala adhyaya). Therefore we shall consider the influence (results), taking into account various factors.

Other results of Surya placed in the 2nd Bhava are the following: If there is even a small ruinous influence on Surya placed in the Bhava of wealth (the 2nd house), then the person will suffer from diseases of the mouth and the eyes. His face is of a copper colour. He pays very much attention to the cleanliness of his home and to order in his things. He will more than once be drawn into quarrels, disputes and clashes with his kin. His speech is an order (a command). He has a large family. Redness may be noticeable in his eyes. He has a habit of eating hot food. Enmity with brothers over the division of the paternal property is possible.

The Sun in the 2nd house

Identification of oneself with resources and the material decorations of life. An unwillingness to look poor or insufficiently well off. A striving to accumulate resources, as independence and security from external irritants. Thinking and responsibility within the framework of “mine” or “not mine”.

In the natural horoscope [where Aries occupies the 1st house] the 2nd house is ruled by Venus and the sign of Taurus. Therefore the Sun in this house gives applied, everyday accumulation. The person accumulates a lot of clothing, ornaments, food and other practical resources. Money, as a rule, is accumulated for the sake of some material purchases which signify status and attract the opposite sex.

The Sun in the 2nd house creates an argala to the 1st, 4th and 11th houses. Health and self-confidence will suffer (the 1st house). Delays in the manifestation of emotions and a lack of calm (the 4th house). Difficulties in planning the future and in investing in promising ventures (the 11th house).

A favourable Sun:

  • Confidence in one’s sensations with regard to matter
  • Comfort in any financial conditions of life
  • Competent management of resources and an assessment of the real value of goods and services.
  • An unusual, trust-inspiring appearance
  • Good dieticians, even without the corresponding education
  • Competent, confident speech. Business orators.
  • Fairness in business. Meticulousness in money.
  • A high level of organisation of the surrounding space

An unfavourable Sun:

  • Envy of the material achievements of others
  • Greed, an unwillingness to let money go
  • Closedness in personal matters and secrets (which may potentially be counted among the pluses).
  • They can be despotic towards cohabitants, neighbours, fellow travellers and co-workers.
  • Excessive pedantry and an unwillingness to accept the habits of those around.

Health:

There are often problems with the teeth. There may be lowered immunity in the ENT area and frequent diseases of the eyes, ears, throat, mouth and nose. If the person does not develop financially — weak eyesight. Sometimes disturbances in the area of the genitourinary system are observed (the aspect of the Sun on the 8th house). Most of the illnesses are removed if the person develops and has wealth.

Conclusion:

A fairly superficial placement for the Sun, but this may be counted among the pluses if the person improves his financial and material position. Identification of oneself with material development gives a genuine, applied impulse to growth. A spiritual, subtle understanding of life is made difficult. (Roman Gavrilov — the Vidyalaya site)
