Purva Bhadrapada Nakshatra
25. Purva Bhadrapada (20° of Aquarius — 3°20′ of Pisces)
Varahamihira: Those who have the Moon in Purva Bhadrapada will suffer from calamities and will place the property they have acquired at the disposal of their partners; they will speak fluently and intelligibly; they are stingy and know how to earn money.
General indications: The symbol of Purva Bhadrapada is the front of a funeral bier (sometimes a man with two faces), and its presiding deity is Ajaikapada, a grim deity whose name may mean «the one-footed unborn one» (or, perhaps, «the one-footed goat»). By all appearances Ajaikapada is a hypostasis of Rudra, whom we encountered when discussing the nakshatra Ardra.
Purva Bhadrapada is traditionally associated, both physically and metaphorically, with fire and heat, burning and catabolic activity. Possibly because of the connection with Rudra, the god of destruction, who rules fire and heat, especially (bearing in mind the image of the funeral bier) the fire and heat of the funeral pyres on which corpses are cremated. The two-faced being may signify the hour of death, when the eye is opened simultaneously to the farewell prospect of this world and to another world belonging to the realm of the dead. Or else it may signify two-faced behaviour, indicating a person who has another life into which he does not admit everyone or always.
If the lagna or the Moon falls into Purva Bhadrapada, this often serves as an indication of an excessively serious, frightening, easily excitable, nervous personality, who may nevertheless possess oratorical mastery. Passion, impetuosity and anger are quite inherent in Purva Bhadrapada, and cynicism, rudeness, insults, greed and an entranced admiration, even to the point of ecstasy, of evil and the dark side of life naturally fall under its influence. It rules over withering sufferings, downfall and apostasy, wounds and injuries from accidents and attacks. Under its power are punishments and penances, since deeds performed under its influence often call into life tormenting and disturbing circumstances accompanied by pangs of conscience, despondency and difficulties.
Physiology and diseases: The ribs; the lateral surfaces of the legs; the left hip and the soles of the feet.
Professions, people and places of habitation: Those who are connected with death and dying: owners of funeral parlours, murderers and so on. People who are cruel in deed or in word. Excessively wound-up and hot-tempered persons — such as radicals, fanatics and terrorists. Ascetics, and also masochists and those who mortify their flesh. Black magicians. Confinement in a prison or a mental hospital.
Purva Bhadrapada (Sanskrit: पूर्वभाद्र) is represented by two bright stars in the constellation Pegasus.

The key concept
Purposefulness, an inclination to concentrate on a single action, the attainment of success after the removal of obstacles.
If one were to try to describe Purva Bhadrapada in one word, that word would be «diabolical». Most of the negative qualities of human nature, such as pessimism, licentiousness, violence and lies, may be attributed to this nakshatra. Since all the negative aspects manifest through the ego, humility becomes the most important quality for people who are under the influence of Purva Bhadrapada.
One of the few positive qualities of this nakshatra is loyalty to those it respects. But this is a double-edged sword, since the object of its attachment is often not distinguished by inner harmony. Thus for people under the influence of Purva Bhadrapada it is important to choose the right object of devotion from the very beginning. Other positive qualities of this nakshatra are sincerity and industriousness, even if the goals set are not too harmonious. Purva Bhadrapada possesses astonishing persistence and will go to any lengths to attain what it desires.
Purva Bhadrapada is connected both with the persecutor and with the victim. Developed souls use the energy of this nakshatra for transformation by causing harm to themselves. Severe ascetics and saints such as Vishvamitra, who passed through extreme forms of penance, essentially use the energy of Purva Bhadrapada.
A personality who is under the influence of this nakshatra is not easy to pick out among those around, because they possess an excellent ability for adaptation and mimicry. Purva Bhadrapada people are ordinary people with ordinary jobs, who speak, eat and dress like everyone else, and it is impossible to guess what things they get up to in their private life. They keep their peculiarities and vices secret. The only sign by which one can distinguish a person with a strong Purva Bhadrapada is his tense, nervous manner of behaviour plus a very serious facial expression. He will be the first to explode in a conflict situation. And yet Purva Bhadrapada people try to behave in a friendly way in society and to look contented. Although in essence they are two-faced and belong to the type who by day work at an ordinary job and by night visit fetish clubs, shake their heads at rock concerts, take pleasure in horrifying fantasies, practise dark tantric rituals and plan conspiracies and criminal affairs. People who are under the influence of this nakshatra are very susceptible to radical views and are often members of extremist and fundamentalist groups.
Not every person who is under the influence of Purva Bhadrapada expresses negative energies physically. More developed souls take part in the battle between light and darkness within their own consciousness and heart. Many Purva Bhadrapada people, instead of being persecutors, turn out to be victims. Artists who are under the strong influence of this asterism often direct all their dark energy into creativity, be it literature, music or painting.
In the sexual sphere Purva Bhadrapada people, as in everything else, are inclined to fluctuate between opposites. All kinds of sexual perversions and phobias are considered to issue from this nakshatra.
An inclination to regret the past is one of the characteristic traits of this nakshatra. Purva Bhadrapada people often worry about what they have lived through, reproaching themselves for all the mistakes they have made.
Purva Bhadrapada people are stingy; greed and acquisitiveness are inherent in them. However, they are ready to give all their prosperity to their partners, their teachers or for the sake of their goal. Their capacity for revenge has no equal.
Purva Bhadrapada acts as a bridge between materialistic and spiritual consciousness. It is precisely this bridge that is blocked in most people at the present time. Purva Bhadrapada possesses the power to raise the soul to a higher level of development at the cost of an inner purification by the burning flame of repentance.
But it should be remembered that the ruler here is Jupiter, and it gives such qualities as intellect, devotion and abilities for mysticism.
A fiery temperament, high activity, independence, non-standard thinking. They can see a problem from various sides, sometimes in an unusual way.
Under negative aspects such qualities as malice, cynicism, criticism, impulsiveness and a restless mind manifest. Accidents, injuries and attacks are possible.
Men
Of medium height, they have plump lips. One of the physical peculiarities is a high arch of the feet.
Their character is calm and peace-loving; they prefer quiet. In certain situations there may be an outburst of emotions, but rarely. They are simple-hearted, but at the same time have firm principles, which often cause them mental suffering. Following their principles deprives them of flexibility, while life constantly throws up tasks of choosing a path — whether to make a compromise or to voice impartial judgements.
They love to eat a lot and tastily. They are indifferent to fashion and take little care of their wardrobe.
They prefer knowledge to blind faith. They are always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need, even if instead of gratitude they receive resistance and hatred. They are God-fearing and attached to religious rituals.
They are intelligent and can voice their opinion without emotion. They are good at any kind of activity and quickly master skills. They easily make a career in the civil service. The period from 24 to 33 is characterised by progress in life. The period from 40 to 54 is a time of full realisation. They are rational in their spending. They are successful in the sphere of business and banking, and government service suits them. They may be successful as teachers, actors, writers, researchers and astrologers.
They receive little love from the mother — an early separation from the mother is possible, or her early departure, or her being busy at work to the detriment of relations with the child. Despite possible conflicts with the father, the native will feel pride in him. Family life is happy, the wife is good and the children are obedient. They usually live far from their homeland.
Increased acidity, diabetes, problems with the ribs and feet, paralysis and cuts are possible.
Women
Of medium height and medium build, they are attractive in appearance and have large expressive eyes.
These are honest and sincere women; they have principles and a notion of the right path, and are born leaders. In managerial work they know how to make subordinates work and achieve success. They render help to those around them only when they are sure that the display of kindness, compassion and support is really necessary. They are well bred, polite and tactful. They achieve success in the technical sphere and may be good teachers, astrologers and researchers.
They are attached to their husband and have good children. They are wonderful housewives. They have a good ability for running a household.
They are inclined to low blood pressure; there may be disturbances of the heart rhythm, headaches, problems in the ankle joint and sweating of the feet.
The padas (quarters)
The 1st pada of the nakshatra Purva Bhadrapada (20°00′ — 23°20′ of Aquarius) falls into the navamsha of Aries, ruled by Mars. In this pada the nakshatra manifests from its most aggressive side. However, those born in this pada control themselves successfully. The pada gives incredible determination in attaining the goals set, envy and anxiety.
The 2nd pada of the nakshatra Purva Bhadrapada (23°20′ — 26°40′ of Aquarius) falls into the navamsha of Taurus, ruled by Venus. This pada is connected with the tolerant side of the nakshatra, but nevertheless stubbornness, egocentricity and a love of arguments manifest in the character.
The 3rd pada of the nakshatra Purva Bhadrapada (26°40′ — 30°00′ of Aquarius) falls into the navamsha of Gemini, ruled by Mercury. Communicativeness, curiosity, a solid and happy family in women. This is the lightest and brightest pada of the nakshatra.
The 4th pada of the nakshatra Purva Bhadrapada (00°00′ — 3°20′ of Pisces) falls into the navamsha of Cancer, ruled by the Moon. This pada possesses a truly diabolical character, in the sense that it can be both extremely merciful and extremely dangerous. It is simultaneously connected with the persecuted and the persecutor. Those born in this pada may occupy any social position, and they are the most skilful in the social sphere. It gives material sufficiency and a sense of self-worth.
The ruling planet
The main ruling planet of this nakshatra is Jupiter. It does not become clear at once why such a favourable planet rules such a malefic nakshatra. To solve this riddle it is worth recalling the two-faced nature of Purva Bhadrapada. It very successfully demonstrates the Jupiterian socially approved, well-bred and conservative front side. It is also skilled at earning money, and Jupiter, as we know, is the karaka of wealth. However, its ways of earning money are sometimes dubious.
In accordance with Jupiter’s natural inclination towards expansion, this is an expansive nakshatra. However, it uses its expansiveness in order to promote the realisation of destructive goals. The energy of Jupiter reaches its peak in this nakshatra, and this means that, from a certain moment on, Purva Bhadrapada goes beyond the limits of Jupiterian social values, and then the moralistic and preserving influence of Jupiter ceases. A phase of destruction and dissolution begins.
Saturn is connected with Purva Bhadrapada because it is the ruler of Aquarius. Saturn is connected with the grief-bringing and disciplining aspect of the nakshatra, which gives detachment. This also indicates the fact that the nakshatra is always inclined towards the physical expression of its «dark» side.
Ketu is connected with the nakshatra thanks to that small part of it which is located in the constellation Pisces. Ketu is the most destructive and impartial planet, and the nakshatra needs a corresponding energy in order to inflict torments on itself and on those around it. When Ketu works beneficially on the inner level, all attachments are cut off without self-torture. When Ketu works beneficially on the outer individual level, the nakshatra tries to control and sublimate inner desires through outer manifestations, such as the torture of the body during extremely intense penance. When Ketu manifests negatively on the outer level, it strikes those around, and here we get cold-blooded serial killers, battle generals and behind-the-scenes manipulators.
A conjunction of Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in fierce or cruel nakshatras gives an energy similar to the energy of Purva Bhadrapada.
Very few planets manifest well in Purva Bhadrapada. Only a strong and favourably aspected Jupiter is good here. Saturn may also give fair results if Jupiter is well placed in the chart. A well-placed Ketu, especially if it is located in the part relating to Pisces, may give non-attachment in a positive key.
