The 2nd house of the horoscope — DHANA BHAVA — the house of wealth, food, knowledge and speech.

The position of the ruler of the 2nd house shows what is a source of income and sustenance for the native, in which spheres he is inclined to invest his money and resources, where and on what he will spend them, or from where he will receive them. The lord of the 2nd house also indicates what the native values in his life, what his family values and relations with those close to him are; how and for what he uses his speech.

The second house of the horoscope is responsible for: material well-being, personal savings, that which is earned by one’s own labour, prosperity, food, material achievements, the family, the second marriage (being the 8th house — or the “death” — from the 7th house of marriage), personal connections, friends, the face, speech, sight, the nose, the right eye, the teeth, the tongue, the nails, death, learning, education, teachers, bankers, lawyers, security, stock exchanges, cash, documents, mortgages, bank accounts, capital, liquid assets, financial affairs, gold, silver, rubies, pearls.

Parts of the body: the face, the mouth, the cheeks, the eyes, the throat, the tongue, the teeth, the chin.

The lord of the 2nd house in the houses of the horoscope — a presentation:

The second house is the resource for the first house — that without which the body (the 1st house) cannot exist; that which will sustain the existence of the body.

The second house is the family, as the principal source of sustenance (especially the parental family in the first years of life); it indicates what kind of family this is: the origin, what one is “fed” with in the family, and the family property.

The 2nd house is very close to the word “upbringing”. The 2nd house is both education (elementary) and upbringing, because it is precisely the family that is responsible for the upbringing a child receives.

The second house is speech, the ability to express oneself through sound, and the ability to communicate

The second house is the sources of income, prosperity (that in which it is expressed) and savings

The 2nd house is food in all its manifestations — that with which we “feed” the body

The second house will show what is of value to us — since we spend money and time only on what is of value to us

The 2nd bhava is a maraka house, an energy- and time-consuming bhava: the body without food will cease to exist

If a strong lord of the 2nd house is in the trikonas or kendras — this is very favourable for the significations of the 2nd house. If an unafflicted lord of the 2nd house is in the 2nd or 11th houses — this too is favourable, in the first place for money, since a powerful yoga of wealth (Dhana yoga) is formed.

If the lord of the 2nd house is in the 6th dusthana — the house is weakened, but does not close off money, since the lord of the 2nd house of Artha is in another 6th house of Artha (the same element). It is said, and the experience of consulting confirms this, that such a person will become wealthy after overcoming obstacles and hard work.

If the lord of the 2nd house is in the 8th dusthana — the house is weakened, but from the 8th house the lord aspects its own house. From my experience this is not very favourable for the eyesight, especially if it is the Sun.

If the lord of the 2nd house is in the 12th dusthana — the house is weakened and all the finances go on expenditures. It is difficult for the person to accumulate money. But on the other hand it is said, and again my experience confirms it, that such a person may earn well in lands across the ocean (these are the significations of the 12th house).

When the lord of the 2nd house is in the dusthanas — the 6th, 8th, 12th houses — such a person will be inclined to lie or to invent something. In the trikonas the speech is usually truthful, directed towards the good of all living beings. In the kendras — strong, convincing speech. But in general one must look at the other details too, and of course at the upbringing, the education and the general level of culture.

If the lord of the 2nd house is weakened — there are some difficulties in all the significations of the 2nd house.

Upayas (methods of harmonisation) for the 2nd house:

To watch over one’s diet: how, what, where and with whom we eat.
To watch over one’s speech — respectful, reverent, conscious speech.
To be scrupulous and honest in money matters.
To engage in self-education and in association with wise people.
To give children a family upbringing and education.
To serve and worship one’s parents, seeing in them a part of God — the manifestation of the masculine and feminine Divine principle.
To feed the poor and students.
