Taurus (Vrishabha)

Date 20 Jan 2023
Taurus (Vrishabha)

Taurus — is a fixed sign, foretelling a person of a resolute, persistent nature. This sign is symbolised by the buffalo, which as it were advises one to be polite and careful with such a person. Since Taurus is ruled by Venus, the character of this person will be sensual, artistic, and such a person will be charismatic and strong. Outwardly they are usually handsome, their character — loving, devoted, but in moments of anger — passionate, prone to violence.

Although this person is proud and stubborn, they are at the same time tender and easily fall under the influence of the opposite sex. They are self-confident; they possess enormous endurance and resoluteness. The intellect is strong, the abilities to understand art, to know and love nature may be well developed, these people can be generous with gifts. They are granted a spirit of sacrifice and their friendship is constant. They like to do things their own way and they are capable of performing work requiring high quality. Attempts to command such a person and to irritate them can be a risky business.

A rising Taurus indicates a person of brilliant appearance, large eyes and hands, but weak nerves. They study well, forgive easily, and are fortunate. Sometimes they treat their parents badly. Fortune may accompany them in matters connected with agriculture. They are attached to their husbands or wives, usually have more daughters than sons, but their children will perhaps gladden them less than is usually the case with other people.

In conclusion let us note that a rising Taurus is associated with a responsive, feminine and pleasant character.

Some observations concerning the Ascendant in the sign of Taurus

  1.  Saturn manifests the effects of a Raja-yoga, but does not allow Taurus natives to accumulate money. Its position in the 10th has a beneficial influence on the person, however in the 2nd house Saturn can act extremely destructively. The person will earn well and become well known, but will not be able to remain long in such an advantageous position.
  2. A conjunction of the Sun and Mercury is not capable of giving powerful effects of a Raja-yoga.
  3. The Moon in  the 4th house under the aspect of Jupiter forms a Raja-yoga.
  4. Mars in the 7th or 9th house is favourable.
  5. A combination of the Sun and Saturn in the 11th house promises a long life.
  6. When Saturn is placed in the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th or 11th houses, its dasha will be successful.
  7. A conjunction of Venus and Saturn or their mutual aspect in the 1st, 4th, 6th, 7th or 9th houses bestows prosperity.
  8. If the Sun with Mercury are in the 1st, 4th or 8th house, a comfortable and prosperous life awaits the person.
  9. A person with Mercury in the 1st, 2nd or 5th house will be successful and well provided for.
  10. Saturn together with Mercury in the 10th house promise wealth and well-being.
  11. When the 11th house  in the chart is occupied by Mercury, and the 2nd — by Jupiter, the person will be swimming in money.
  12. The best yoga arises when Saturn resides in the same house as Venus or Mercury, and Jupiter aspects them from the sign of Pisces.
  13. In a female chart the position of Mars in the 9th house shows a good spouse and speaks of happiness in personal life.
  14. A yoga formed by an exchange of the lords of the 4th and 9th houses will not bring fruit.
  15. An exchange between the 5th and 7th houses creates Putra- and Kalatra-doshas [putra (Skt.) —  son; kalatra (Skt.)  — spouse, marriage partner; dosha (Skt.) — defect, flaw. — translator's note]
  16. The position of Jupiter in the 11th house does not allow the person to accumulate a fortune.
  17. A person will become bankrupt if in their chart Jupiter or Saturn are in the 12th house, and Mercury — in the 9th, 10th or 11th.
  18. The Yoga-karaka Saturn will not  bring good fruit if it occupies the 5th house.
  19. If the sign of Taurus falls into the 7th house, the person will have a devoted partner with pleasant speech and a kind heart.
  20. The characteristic traits of people born in the different drekkanas of Taurus:
  • 1st drekkana (00° –10° 00′ of Taurus): henpecked, a lover of good food and drink, dresses expensively.
  • 2nd drekkana (10°01′ –20° 00′ of Taurus): a kind heart, success with the opposite sex; rich, but tight-fisted.
  • 3rd drekkana (20°01′ –30° 00′ of Taurus): heroic deeds, a restless mind; earns well, but does not feel happy.

Nakshatras in the sign of Taurus

Depending on which degrees the ascendant or lagna occupies in Taurus, the nakshatras will exert their influence on the character and destiny.

Thus, the nakshatra Krittika, falling into the degrees of Taurus (00° –10° 00′ of Taurus), will reward one with talent in the fine arts.

The nakshatra Rohini ( 10° 00′ – 23° 20′ of Taurus ) will endow a person whose ascendant or lagna is in Taurus with sexuality and charm.

If the ascendant or lagna in Taurus falls into the degrees of the nakshatra Mrigashira (23° 20′ – 30°), soft and tender notes will appear in the person's character.

Lagna in Taurus. Taurus in Vedic astrology.

The symbol of Taurus is the bull, an animal famed for its strength. Resembling bulls, Taurus people are often inclined to demonstrate their physical or mental strength; they are not easily driven out of temper, but if they do fly into a rage over something, their onslaught is hard to withstand. A «Taurean» ascendant not infrequently endows a person with a bull's neck, since Taurus rules the second house of the natural zodiac.

When Taurus turns out to be the rising constellation in a horoscope, Mercury (the planet of intellect and shrewdness, which is in mutual friendship with the ruler of the lagna, Venus) turns out to be the lord of the second house (Gemini) — the house of money and of the fifth house (Virgo) — the house of discernment and shrewdness. Such a double influence of Mercury on the mental faculties in this lagna is not infrequently manifested in the form of a sharp intellect, and therefore among Taurus natives there are many good writers (both Mercury and the fifth house have a relation to writing), and it also turns their mental activity towards the acquisition of money (since both Mercury and the second house are responsible for commerce), in which they can succeed very greatly indeed). This peculiarity of theirs is further reinforced by the fact that the ruler of Taurus, Venus, is by its nature a materialistic (rajasic) graha, becoming exalted in the eleventh house, the house of gain; therefore it is regarded as one of the significators of acquisition and enrichment. Under the rulership of Saturn are the ninth and tenth houses of the chart, which gives persistence in the acquisition of knowledge and of a career, all the more so since Saturn is friendly disposed towards Venus.

Persons born with the lagna in Taurus rarely have many children, since Virgo (the fifth house for a Taurus lagna) is a barren constellation. The fact that the lord of the lagna for these people — Venus — experiences its fall in the fifth house hints at griefs and troubles connected with children, and also, perhaps, with the creative potential of their own personality. But this deficiency will not affect shrewdness and the capacity for discrimination, that is, other important meanings of the fifth house, because the lord of the fifth house, Mercury, has its exaltation in the fifth house. Since the pleasure-loving Venus rules, along with the lagna, the sixth house as well (nourishment, diet), Mercury as the ruler of the second house implies a heightened interest in preparing and savouring food. Whether such a person becomes a skilful cook or else simply a glutton depends on the actual strength of each of the grahas and on their placement in the horoscope.

Mars is at the same time the lord of the seventh and twelfth houses, while Venus is the lady of the first and sixth houses. This situation can lead to problems in relationships, since the twelfth house is the house of negation with respect to the ascendant, and the sixth is the house of negation of the seventh (the sixth = the twelfth house counting from the seventh). Our guru taught us: «Venus, the ruler of the first house for a Taurus lagna, is a very passive graha, a seeker of reconciliation, whereas Mars, ruling the seventh house, is self-assured, assertive and domineering. White is the colour of Venus, and red is the colour of Mars. When you mix red with white, you get red. This means that Taurus natives are ready to sacrifice their own individuality in the name of maintaining a relationship. But this approach cannot work indefinitely, and therefore the marriage of a person born with the lagna in Taurus is often unsuccessful». The fact that Jupiter simultaneously rules houses 8 and 11 suggests that these two houses exert an influence on each other, and from this follows an inclination to experience anxiety because of elder brothers and sisters or because of friends, or, conversely, to cause anxiety to them.

Taurus — is the sign of Venus, the fixed sign of earth, the face and neck of the Cosmic Man (the Universal Form of the Supreme Lord — personified time). Its symbol is the bull. As sign no. 2 it endows a person with a heightened sensitivity to personal relations, partnership and the expression of feelings. People of this type strive for equilibrium and harmony in their immediate surroundings.

Taurus is stable, enduring and constant in its movement. It is endowed with a good sense of form and beauty and can become an artist or a poet. Usually Taurus natives are attractive, especially in youth, and love to emphasise their beauty. They have a strongly developed possessive instinct, and therefore many of them become businessmen or bankers and accumulate large capital. Taurus is inclined to become attached to the material side of life. They are characterised by sensuality and a love of comfort, luxury and ornaments. But with the same ease they develop refined taste and elegance. Taurus natives are free in communication and quickly establish contacts with strangers and foreigners.

People of this type are stubborn and do not like to retreat from positions once taken. They are hard to drive out of temper, but whoever manages it will hardly be able to earn forgiveness quickly. Besides, Taurus natives can display cruelty or insensitivity towards those who do not fall into their immediate circle of communication. They have a good memory, however they can become excessively sentimental and cling to a past which it is time to forget. Taurus feels at home in the physical world, loves their body and values sensual sensations.

Usually Taurus natives strive for a well-ordered domestic and married life, for harmony and happiness in the home. They can be very romantic and devoted; many of them are convinced that all that exists is love. Taurus natives are attached to the earth, love to work with their hands and try to give beautiful forms to their material surroundings. They see their task as acquiring, preserving and ennobling. On the spiritual plane they are usually devout and committed to traditions and rituals.

RESULTS OF BIRTH IN VRISHABHA LAGNA [Taurus]

«Jataka-Bharanam» 13:2. A person whose birth occurred in Vrishabha-Lagna is a leader among righteous, skilful and worthy people, rich, full of respect for their Guru (Teacher), skilled in war, possesses courage and patience, they are a warrior, they have pleasant speech, and they are calm.

Commentary: The Rashi Vrishabha [the sign Taurus] is ruled by Shukra [Venus]. This is the 2nd Rashi of the zodiac. Its symbol is the bull (ox, buffalo). A person born in this Lagna is industrious (works hard), strong and peace-loving. This Rashi has an immovable character, and therefore a person in this Lagna advances in their activity patiently and slowly, but steadily and continuously. They do not wish (do not feel the need) to change their ideas. Their main preference is given to the idea of permanence and stability in all respects. If love develops in them for someone, they maintain that love forever and strongly. The business partnerships of such a person do not pass quickly. The ideas of such people are not easily changed. They strictly follow the faith or opinion which they once accepted. Because they firmly adhere to their decision, other people call them persistent or stubborn. They are slow. If they are at enmity with someone, they do not easily come to a compromise. On the physical and mental level those born in Vrishabha Lagna are endowed with great might. Since the ruler of this Rashi is the Graha Shukra [Venus], the person is endowed with harmony, and also with a good understanding (the ability to sense subtle differences) in music and art. Thanks to their love of association, they are extremely sociable. They have a feeling of respect for friends and guests, and they receive genuine pleasure from receiving them and showing them respect. Observing their life, their food and so on, one may suppose that they have good taste. Shukra is the son of Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. Therefore such people especially strive for the acquisition of wealth and property. They have good abilities to earn and acquire objects of comfort. Mainly they love to engage in commerce. With regard to financial help to others they must pass through bitter experience. These people feel and are aware of their own rightness very deeply. The author of the treatise ‘Jātakā-Pārijata’ writes of a person born in Vrishabha Lagna [Taurus] that they possess cows and other horned cattle, receive pleasure from the worship of the Devatas, the Guru (preceptor) and the Brahmins. They have several children, a calm intellect and mind, they read the Shastras, love to wander everywhere, possess a handsome appearance and are lustful (voluptuous). According to the author of ‘Mān-Sāgri’, a person born under Vrishabha Lagna has a feeling of respect and reverence for society and the Guru (Preceptor). They speak pleasantly, and their speech pleases others, they possess virtues (talents), are famous (well known), greedy, mighty and loved by all.
