“Bhrigu Sutra” 4.38-40
If Mercury is in the 5th house, the maternal uncle of the owner of the horoscope will suffer from a serious disease of the throat. A person with such a placement of Mercury will be reasonable, eloquent and wise and will have faith in mantras. He will have good relations with his mother, but it will be difficult for him to have children. If the lord of the 5th house is conjunct with ruinous planets or is weak, the loss of his own child and the adoption of another’s awaits the owner of the horoscope. His moral principles will be dubious.
Comments:
We take the liberty of expressing our disagreement with the idea that Mercury in the 5th house will bring misfortune to the uncle of the owner of the horoscope, since the 5th house has no relation to this whatsoever. The life of the mother’s brother is determined from the 6th house, as the third from the 4th house — the house of the mother. Possibly this error crept in through an incompetent copying of the treatise.
The 5th house speaks of children, entertainment, pleasures, an inclination towards prayers and the practice of mantras, and of the activity in the previous life. A favourable Mercury will give a good education, an inclination towards literary creativity and a pedagogical talent, and sporting achievements. However, being a sexless planet of eunuch nature, Mercury in the 5th house is one of the indicators of infertility or of the loss of a child, especially if it is conjunct with a ruinous planet. This will not happen if the lord of the 5th house and the putra karaka Jupiter, the indicator of a son, are strong and well placed. Mercury also gives more benefic results if it is placed in its own sign or its sign of exaltation.
Other opinions concerning Mercury in the 5th house:
“Brihat Jataka” — the owner of the horoscope will become a minister.
“Phaladipika” — thanks to his brilliant intellect, a person with such a placement of Mercury in the horoscope will become famous and will attain happiness. He will have many children, and he will become interested in mantras.
“Saravali” — the owner of the horoscope will be an expert in mantra shastra. He will be well educated and happy, will occupy an influential position in society and will have many children. Hypnotic abilities will be inherent in him.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — Mercury in the 5th house speaks of late children and of pronounced egoism. The owner of the horoscope will be a skilful hypnotist.
Note: A divergence of views on the placement of Mercury in the 5th house is observed only with regard to children. The “Phaladipika” and the “Saravali” hold the opinion that the owner of the horoscope will have many children, whereas the “Bhrigu Sutra” and the “Chamatkar Chintamani” express the opposite view. We repeat our opinion that in order to draw final conclusions it is necessary to look at the placement of the lord of the 5th house and of Jupiter.

The results of the placement of Mercury (Buddha) in the 5th house
Being placed in the Bhava of the son (in the 5th house), Buddha — the son of Chandra — makes the person happy thanks to the presence of a son; he has many friends, he gives advice skilfully and is skilful in disputes, possesses a good character and a great interest in games and sporting contests.
Comments: The placement of Buddha [Mercury] in the 5th Bhava [house] is not very favourable for happiness thanks to a son, since Buddha is a barren Graha [planet]. If there is any kind of influence on Buddha in the 5th Bhava from the other sexless Graha, Shani [Saturn], then the person will be deprived of offspring and will not obtain a son. Buddha is the Karaka [significator] of intellect. If it occupies the Bhava of intellect (the 5th house) and receives a benefic influence, then the person will of course be endowed with reason and wisdom, will be able to analyse the various aspects of any subject or theme, and can plan the future successfully. The authors on Vedic astrology say that such a person also knows Mantra Shastra (the science of mantras). Besides this, he is very educated, possesses an influential personality, a refined intellect and a foresight of consequences. Such a person creates his own future by the abilities of his own reason and by his wisdom. In character he loves entertainment.
