Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra
26. Uttara Bhadrapada (3°20′ — 16°40′ of Pisces)
Varahamihira: If the Moon is in Uttara Bhadrapada, this signifies happy people who are capable orators, who have children and grandchildren, who gain the upper hand over their enemies and who are virtuous.
General indications: The symbol of Uttara Bhadrapada is the rear part of a funeral bier, and its deity is Ahirbudhnya, «the Serpent of the depths». Just as in the case of the two other «Purva — Uttara» pairs of nakshatras, many meanings of the preceding one suit the one that follows it, although, as a rule, it is easier to control the anger of Uttara Bhadrapada than the anger of its predecessor. Here we will not see such a pathological fascination with cruelty, deformities and vices. While dark deeds are done by those who are under the strong influence of Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada displays greater restraint, and its evil intentions usually are not realised or are ennobled, turning into their opposite.
The lagna or the Moon here often signifies a benevolent person, inclined to self-sacrifice, who may bring benefit through gifts, donations, inheritances and so on.
The serpent of the primordial depths (which may be compared with the «yawning heights» of the heavens) signifies simultaneously movement and seclusion or, perhaps, movement at a distance or in secret. It also indicates solitude and retirement. Like Ajaikapada, Ahirbudhnya may serve as a good illustration of the force called by the tantrics Kundalini Shakti — the energy which, once awakened, initiates a process of spiritual ascent that at its peak bestows extraordinary wisdom, knowledge, enlightenment and sometimes extraordinary abilities or omniscience.
Physiology and diseases: The sides, including the ribs; the lateral surfaces of the legs; the shins and the soles of the feet.
Professions, people and places of habitation: Great enthusiasts and saints. Those who renounce the world. People indifferent to life. Those possessing extraordinary insight, erudition, quickness of wit or omniscience. Charitable organisations. Practitioners of tantra. Cemeteries and crematoria. Many things duplicating the meanings of Purva Bhadrapada.

The key concept
It gives us the opportunity to connect with the nourishing and sustaining aspects of our personality and of our surroundings, thus leading to maximum growth and an abundant harvest of benefits.
It is very difficult to describe the character of this nakshatra precisely. It can act in a multitude of ways, adapting to its needs and surroundings, and possesses an enormous variety of qualities, properties and manifestations. Since wisdom is the key word for this nakshatra, those under its patronage act on the basis of the peculiarities of the present moment. The intentions of this nakshatra are, as a rule, benevolent. Its ambitions are unselfish; it is full of empathy, understanding and compassion.
Despite the apparent flexibility of this nakshatra, it has a fairly stable character. Flexibility in this case is merely a means to attaining a goal. Uttara Bhadrapada may be compared to a wise old man. It never acts hastily and quite often may postpone some actions for its own good. The representatives of this nakshatra are in no hurry. This tendency sometimes leads to their being lazy and unwilling to act when inaction is absolutely inadmissible.
Those under the patronage of Uttara Bhadrapada always keep the whole picture in mind when they make plans and take decisions, and act cautiously, keeping everything under control. They make every effort to remain happy in difficult, troubling and unfavourable circumstances. Uttara Bhadrapada personalities make good consultants. The cooling nature of this nakshatra is able to calm such emotions as anger, a thirst for revenge and envy.
The ascendant in Uttara Bhadrapada endows a person with a calm and serene appearance, modesty, inertia and passivity, and also a large build, broad shoulders, short stature and a tendency to put on weight with age.
How the nakshatra will manifest itself depends largely on the position of Saturn in the chart. The presence of such fiery planets as Mars, the Sun and Jupiter in this nakshatra helps it to overcome inertia. It must be mentioned that the presence of any planet in Uttara Bhadrapada makes the latter more dynamic. In a good position it gives a person the wisdom to determine the right perspective in life. Being afflicted, it makes a person too conservative, experiencing a fear of meeting reality and change.
Uttara Bhadrapada may provoke destruction or seemingly malefic actions, but these actions are directed in the name of common sense. Uttara Bhadrapada, even while destroying, does not become cruel and immoral. Its anger is noble, and therefore its actions are not thoughtless.
Well-foundedness is the key to unravelling this nakshatra. It likes to present solutions in the light most advantageous to everyone, sees the needs of those around it, but almost always receives benefit from others. Those born in this nakshatra usually receive gifts, donations and inheritances. This nakshatra earns very well and handles money skilfully. A calculating mind endows Uttara Bhadrapada with abilities for astrology, numerology, yoga, meditation and divination.
Uttara Bhadrapada is connected with the third period of a person’s life, when, according to the Vedic concept, he must break the ties of the material world and go into the forest in search of enlightenment. The nakshatra possesses the qualities of secretiveness and seclusion, which may influence a premature withdrawal from worldly duties. Regardless of what stage of evolution a soul born in Uttara Bhadrapada is at, there is always a striving in it towards Higher knowledge.
A personality under the influence of this nakshatra has a good understanding of various aspects of life and «sees to the root». Mystical abilities manifest in them and they have a need for solitude. A hot emotional nature, but there is an ability to control it and the possibility of stopping oneself at the right moment. They are disciplined and hardy and have a good foundation for spiritual growth. The influence of Uttara Bhadrapada gives a family hearth and happiness, children, wealth and good health.
Under negative aspects — passions, gossip, malice, aggression. With a bad placement in the chart as a whole, drug addiction and dissolute sex are possible.
Men
They are charming and attractive and try not to cause trouble to others. They can equally well maintain relations with people of both high and low birth, and are indifferent to social position. They are temperamental and impulsive, do not know how to forgive offences, and are subject to rapid changes of mood.
They can sacrifice everything, even their own life, for the sake of those they love. Wisdom, knowledge and an oratorical talent give them the opportunity to make the impression of an educated person, even if they have not finished secondary school. They possess a talent for defeating their enemies and attaining a high position. They are sexual and love the company of women.
They can attain success in various spheres, are interested in the fine arts, and are capable of writing large scientific works, articles and books. Since laziness is not characteristic of them, they are able to realise their possibilities. They usually act with enthusiasm and do not fall into despair if something does not work out. They are successful in career growth and responsible in work. Stability and success come after marriage. They begin to earn at the age of 17—18. Changes in the professional sphere occur at 19, 21, 28, 30, 35 and 42 years of age.
They treat their father with reverence, but receive no help from the parental family and usually live far from it. Married life is happy — the person will have a good wife and obedient children.
On the whole good health, although the person himself does not particularly take care of it and turns to a doctor only in the case of a serious illness. Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and paralysis are possible.
Women
Uttara Bhadrapada women are of medium height, have a dense build and large, somewhat protruding eyes. They are courteous, affectionate, warm-hearted and respectful, and are excellent housewives and good mothers.
They adapt splendidly to circumstances and people. They are excellent subordinates and can apply maximum effort to attaining a good position. They find excellent fulfilment in the sphere of advocacy and court proceedings, and may be wonderful nurses and doctors.
She is a diamond — both in her parental family and in her own. It is considered that these women have the patronage of the Goddess Lakshmi.

The padas (quarters)
The first pada of the nakshatra Uttara Bhadrapada (03°20′ – 06°40′ of Pisces) falls into the navamsha of Leo, ruled by the Sun. It represents the active and goal-oriented side of the nakshatra. Beauty, wealth, truthfulness and popularity.
The second pada of the nakshatra Uttara Bhadrapada (06°40′ – 10°00′ of Pisces) falls into the navamsha of Virgo, ruled by Mercury. This quarter relates to the analytical, judicious and planning side of the nakshatra. It strives to find wisdom in small things, and planets here remain in the shadows and do not reveal themselves.
The third pada of the nakshatra Uttara Bhadrapada (10°00′ – 13°20′ of Pisces) falls into the constellation of Libra, ruled by Venus. This part relates to the passive side of the nakshatra, which seeks balance and equilibrium in life. Politeness, learning; intemperance is possible.
The fourth pada of the nakshatra Uttara Bhadrapada (13°20′ – 16°40′ of Pisces) falls into the constellation of Scorpio, ruled by Mars. The pada is connected with the occult, mysterious side of the nakshatra. It gives either deep confusion or deep wisdom. In any case this pada is able to act aggressively, and in those spheres with which it is connected through a planet or a house of the horoscope, tension and an intensity of passions will be present. Wealth, a good, devoted wife, a long life.
The ruling planet
The chief ruler of Uttara Bhadrapada is Saturn. Its energy reaches its peak in this nakshatra. Saturn’s lessons, which it gives in Capricorn and Aquarius, at last engender wisdom and insight. Saturn in Uttara Bhadrapada is no longer a severe teacher but a wise elder, who teaches by means of patience, persistence and his own example. In this nakshatra the subtlest aspects of Saturn’s action are manifested. At times it may give material abundance as a harvest after hard work in a past life. To developed souls this prosperity is bestowed from above as a result of living in unison with the Universe.
Jupiter endows this nakshatra with the property of expansion, and also with compassion, care, sensitivity and acceptance of the Divine will. Uttara Bhadrapada is connected with attaining a balance between Jupiter and Saturn — two planets which, in the opinion of some astrologers, are the most important.
Ketu is connected with the spiritual aspect of the nakshatra, with renunciation and insight. It may be noted that Ketu influences the path by which this nakshatra attains its spiritual goals.
Such active planets as the Sun, Mars and Rahu manifest best of all in Uttara Bhadrapada. Saturn manifests well under aspects from Mars and Jupiter. Jupiter, Mercury and Venus may also manifest positively in conjunction with active planets.
A conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, and also of Ketu, Jupiter and Saturn, convey an energy similar to the energy of Uttara Bhadrapada.
