Capricorn (Makara)

Date 20 Jan 2023
Capricorn (Makara)

Rising sign — Capricorn

Capricorn — is a «feminine» sign, symbolised by a goat climbing a mountain. This image carries within it ideas connected with persistence and ambition in achieving a very high goal (the conquest of some height), an egoistic character and a poorly controlled tongue. A «Capricorn» will have a large appetite, they are talkative, often unable to keep secrets, and they are a good critic. Capricorn is the negative sign [of Saturn], and therefore a certain pessimism and a feeling of being underestimated are inherent in such a person. Capricorn is the tenth sign of the zodiac, which indicates an ability to perform difficult work, a capacity for self-sacrifice, the talent of an organiser and the probability of attaining wide renown in time.

These people are usually lean, with chestnut hair, with handsome facial features. They are practical, capable of waiting patiently for success, but also capable of quickly mastering their goal. They are compassionate towards the needy, but usually egoistic in their actions. They are unsteady in their occupations, changes often occur in their life, they love travel and change, adapt well to various surroundings, are interested in philosophy and religion, have abilities in many fields, and people treat them well. They can be cold and calculating and act well in the field of commerce.

People belonging to this sign usually have partners who are older than they are. They are a little shameless and capable of committing base deeds. Their failures in life cause them considerable anxiety, but they are persistent, they restore their position and often find success. In the middle of their life's path they experience money difficulties. They usually have weak knees, they have a small number of children, and suffer from a lack of energy. They can be inconstant and spiteful, but they work persistently and attain a high position in society.

Indubala — Capricorn: meditation on the symbol of the sign

Lagna in Makara, or the ascendant in Capricorn

Makara is ruled by Shani, Saturn. This sign is strong at night, by its nature — earthy, movable, feminine.

The symbol of the sign is a mythical monster, a winged crocodile, which speaks of persistence and inventiveness in achieving a goal, of an unusual strength of personality, of slowness, endurance, patience and the ability to exert a strong influence on other people, and also of great ambition and a striving for power.

Mars is exalted in Capricorn, and therefore people born under this sign are resolute, can act with lightning speed, at times cunningly. They have a sober, calculating mind and are able to calculate their own and others' actions several steps ahead. Shani, which rules this sign, endows Capricorn natives with loyalty, constancy and dependability. Capricorn natives are dangerous opponents and reliable friends. They are egoistic, dislike being under the control of other people, are not content with little and strive for power. Gradual progress and a striving to achieve their goals are characteristic of them. People whose lagna is in Capricorn are inconspicuous, restrained, and keep their distance in communication. They are practical, able to wait a long time for «their hour», compassionate towards the needy, but egoistic in their actions and capable of base deeds. In their life there are many changes, they adapt well to their surroundings, are interested in philosophy and religion, and have abilities in many fields. Capricorn natives can be cold and calculating, they are ambitious, sometimes envious, callous, stingy and cruel. Nevertheless, they are capable of self-sacrifice, have the talent of an organiser, and in time renown comes to them. In their life there are many failures, and periods of want are possible. They have few children and their marriage partner may be older. Indubala

Lagna in Capricorn. Capricorn in Vedic astrology

The symbol of Capricorn in jyotish is the makara, which is most often translated as «crocodile», but sometimes signifies a certain ancient monster dwelling in the depths of the ocean. This fabulous creature symbolises purposefulness and ambition: firstly, it clings to its prey for dear life, which symbolises persistence in achieving a goal; secondly, it leads an amphibious way of life, combining in itself the energies of two different natural elements — Earth and Water. These qualities of Capricorn are strong also because Capricorn is the 10th house of the natural zodiac, Venus for Capricorn is the ruler of the 5th house (adventurism and ambition) and of the 10th house (career) at the same time, and also because Saturn experiences exaltation in the 10th house (Libra). In people with the lagna in Aries an analogous situation is noted — in their 10th house Mars is exalted; the difference consists in the fact that Mars is interested in achieving the results of its efforts as quickly as possible, whereas Saturn prefers a slow, gradual, consistent way of advancing towards the goal; it is not troubled by the fact that the results may appear not at once, but much later. Such a slow way of advancing is characteristic of Capricorn, in particular, because Saturn is the slowest of the planets, and also because Capricorn is at once a passive rashi and an earthy, that is, ponderous, inert rashi.

Just as in the case of Aries, the lord of this lagna is weakened (is in fall) in the fourth house, which quite often gives birth in them to dissatisfaction with their family life, their ancestors, their ancestral roots and their place of residence. Since Venus is the lord of their 5th house (progeny), Capricorn natives are literally obsessed with their children. Mars, the significator of property, is exalted in the first house, being at the same time the lord of the 4th house (immovable property) and of the 11th house (gain); this indicates advantageous investments in real estate.

Nevertheless, one born with the lagna in Capricorn is inclined to experience dissatisfaction with their property, even property that brings benefit, since Saturn, the second significator of property, is weakened by fall in the fourth house. Saturn, which rules houses 1 and 2 in Capricorn, makes people calculating and tight-fisted, so that in most Capricorn natives you will notice a pronounced pragmatism and a heightened interest in money.

Saturn, a dry planet, is the significator of vata; therefore people with the lagna in Capricorn possess a vata constitution: tall, thin, bony. They not infrequently suffer from arthritis, since Capricorn is a sign of Earth, and where there is Earth, stiffness or impeded movement is always present to one degree or another. According to a number of sources, religious sanctimoniousness is inherent in Capricorn natives, since Jupiter, the significator of spirituality, rules in their chart two dusthanas (houses 3 and 12) and has its fall in the first house. Besides, according to our own observations, in many of those who are interested in India the most important planets or houses are in Capricorn. Partly this is perhaps explained by the fact that the lord of Capricorn — Saturn — is responsible for everything old, tested by time: old things, old traditional values, and also by the fact that Saturn teaches people to pursue their goals patiently.

Robert Svoboda

Capricorn — is the negative sign of Saturn, the cardinal sign of earth, the knees of the Cosmic Man. Its symbol is the crocodile. As sign number ten it personifies power, order and ideal organisation.

In terms of worldly achievements Capricorn natives occupy the last and the first places among all the signs of the zodiac. This is the sign of the practical realisation of ideas. On the material level this can generate vanity and absorption in earthly cares, petty stubbornness and egoism. Poorly developed Capricorn natives are, for example, peasants or farmers who are interested in nothing beyond their plot of land. Somewhat higher on the evolutionary ladder stand the calculating and practical Capricorn businessmen, who all their life save and gain in small ways in the hope of one day making a big killing. On the spiritual level, however, the sign of Capricorn endows a person with the ability to embody spiritual principles in everyday life and in practical work.

Capricorn natives are industrious, persistent and tenacious. They have enough strength to achieve great accomplishments sooner or later. Usually they work for themselves and highly value everything they attain by their own efforts. At the beginning of their career they take a long time to get going and not infrequently encounter obstacles, but this allows them to gather potential for successes in the more distant future. Capricorn natives are ambitious, but not infrequently limit themselves to narrow goals and are excessively harsh or abrupt in their judgements. In business they are calculating and practical. Mathematical abilities are inherent in Capricorn natives, which helps them to work successfully in various fields of science and technology. As a rule, Capricorn natives are committed to traditions, and in past lives many of them were perhaps involved in traditional and, especially, Eastern cultures.

Capricorn natives should listen more attentively to the wishes of those around them, take themselves less seriously and not devote so much attention to the external forms of things. Many Capricorn natives are emotionally cold, which is assisted by an orientation either towards lower, bodily values, or towards higher — intellectual or spiritual ones. The reason for this may be both a striving to observe conventions and simply an inability to rise above the level of sensory sensations.

RESULTS OF BIRTH IN MAKARA LAGNA [Capricorn]

«Jataka-Bharanam» 13:10. If the birth occurred in Makara Lagna [Capricorn], then the person is ugly (of unhandsome forms), sly (cunning), immoral, they have many children, they are very intelligent, intellectual and stingy (greedy).

Commentary: The primary element of the Rashi Makara [the sign Capricorn] is Earth. It possesses a movable (‘Chara’) character, and is ruled by Shani [Saturn]. Because of the rulership of Shani this Rashi endows a person with the qualities of pensiveness, respect for generally accepted principles, a strong and steady power of mind, importance (seriousness) and similar characteristics. Those born in this Lagna do everything eccentrically (whimsically). Many friends quickly leave such people because of their excessive pride — because they want others to behave the same way as they do.

People with Makara Lagna achieve their goal, they work hard and persistently for their family, for themselves and for their followers. They do not want to hear — even from the most beloved or the closest person — criticism of their tradition, of their point of view (world-view) or of the values which they respect. They will make every thing work towards the fulfilment of their aspirations. And therefore they in the end attain a higher position compared with the one in which they were born. In every field they will have a small number of friends because of their stubborn thinking. In their family everyone will have to live in strict discipline. The most important feature in them is that any work done by them can be assessed as perfect in all respects. Their style of life and thinking creates the impression of a mature, adult personality.

According to the author of the treatise «Jataka-Parijata» a person born in Makara Lagna flirts and passionately desires sexual relations with women, is sly (cunning) and speaks with humility.

According to the author of the book «Man-Sagri» a person born with Makara Lagna performs mean, base deeds, they have many children, they are greedy, lazy, corrupted in all respects and perform work with sincere efforts.
