Date 20 Jan 2023
Sagittarius (Dhanu)

Sagittarius — is a «masculine» and «fiery» sign, symbolised by an archer with a bow. This indicates an active, direct and noble character of a person striving towards a great goal or defending some good cause. They are principled, and they make good parents and teachers.

Usually these are healthy, brisk, just, serious and spiritual people, with an open soul, generous, working for the spiritual uplift of others. They possess knowledge in the field of philosophy and possess quite good foresight. They are modest, impulsive, full of enthusiasm, love to travel and hate hypocrisy.

Their appearance: a full figure, a happy smile, chestnut hair, an elongated face, a large nose and ears. Their manner of behaviour is restrained, corresponding to generally accepted traditions, and at the same time they are enterprising. They make good businessmen, officials, since they strive for power, but do not permit dishonesty in using it. They are able to overcome the resistance of their opponents. They can sacrifice themselves for the good of others, and find fortune abroad, or far from the place where they were born.

People belonging to this sign will know the laws and the sacred scriptures, they can become good leaders and guides for people pure of heart. Often quarrels occur in their families, and they sacrifice their love of domestic comforts for the sake of work for the good of humanity. They have good self-control, but lose their money. They are brave and virtuous, but suffer from the opposition of envious people. They enjoy great respect from scholars and noble people, live long, and their life is pure.

Indubala — Sagittarius: meditation on the symbol of the sign

Lagna in Dhanu, or the ascendant in Sagittarius

Dhanu is ruled by Guru, Jupiter. This sign is strong at night, by its nature — fiery, dual and masculine.

The symbol of the sign is an archer with a bow, which suggests the thought that Sagittarius natives are always pursuing unknown high goals. Sagittarius natives are sincere, ambitious, truthful, optimistic, enduring, persistent and reliable. They are interested in philosophy and religion, and strive for a holy and pure life. As soon as a person whose lagna is in Sagittarius enters the room, everyone immediately turns their attention to them. These people «take up a lot of space», not in the literal sense, but in the sense of the energy of the space. They are brisk, cheerful, energetic, they may be noisy, they may be silent, but those around them always feel the significance of their personality. They are principled, open, honest, full of enthusiasm, respected by noble people. Usually they experience opposition from the envious, but are always able to overcome their opponents. Sagittarius natives are modest, impulsive, love to travel, cannot bear hypocrisy and flattery, can sacrifice themselves for the sake of others, find fortune abroad or far from their place of birth, and are interested in philosophy, religion, astrology. For the sake of an idea Sagittarius natives sacrifice their own interests, and therefore their family life cannot be called smooth.

Dhana-yogas for Sagittarius Lagna

  • A conjunction of the Sun with Mercury in the 5th or in the 9th house.
  • The position of Saturn in the 10th or 11th.
  • The Sun and Venus in favourable houses.
  • The 11th house is occupied by Venus and Saturn.
  • Jupiter in the Lagna together with Mercury and Mars or under their aspects.
  • The placement of Jupiter in the Lagna and Mercury in the 11th.

With Ascendants in dual signs all the kendras are ruled by benefic planets — Jupiter and Mercury. Taking into account the fact that these planets additionally acquire the statuses of Badhakesha and Maraka, they suffer most of all from Kendradhipati-dosha. Jupiter for the Lagna of Virgo and Gemini, and Mercury — for the Ascendant in Pisces and Sagittarius produce the effects of Kendradhipati, Badhaka and Maraka and become extremely dangerous. If they are badly placed, debilitated or deprived of strength (because of combustion, defeat in planetary war or poor Shadbala indices), the consequences can be fatal.

Some observations concerning Sagittarius Lagna

  1. Saturn in the 5th or 11th forms a Raja-yoga.
  2. The position of the Sun with Venus in the 9th house opposite Saturn in the 3rd promises wealth and fame.
  3. The position of Jupiter in the 5th house has a negative effect on children.
  4. Jupiter in the 6th means numerous enemies.
  5. If Venus falls into the 8th house, finances will suffer, but enemies will disappear.
  6. Saturn in the 8th house brings discord into family life and money matters, however it assists a long life.
  7. A person with Jupiter in the Lagna stands out among the rest for their nobility, magnanimity and impartiality.
  8. Jupiter on the Ascendant and the Sun in the 5th house form a remarkable Raja-yoga.
  9. A person with a natal Mars in the 8th house will be widowed early.
  10. A conjunction of the Sun and Mercury, especially in the constellation of Virgo — is an excellent Raja-yoga.
  11. Yet another Raja-yoga takes place with a conjunction of the Sun and Mercury in the 4th house, provided that the debilitation of Mercury is cancelled by Nicha-bhanga.
  12. The residence of Saturn  in  Libra  promises the achievement of success thanks to cooperation with people in higher positions.
  13. Mars in the 8th bhava and Venus in a Martian/Saturnian sign or under the influence of Mars/Saturn make the person amoral.
  14. In the 1st, 9th and 10th houses the Sun works simply excellently, and in the 3rd or 6th it shows itself averagely.
  15. Venus and Saturn are marakas. The latter, however, does not lead to death. Jupiter maintains neutrality.
  16. The partner of a person with Sagittarius in the 7th house will be distinguished by strange and shameless behaviour, a bad and cantankerous character, egoism and fault-finding.
  17. Mercury for this Lagna becomes especially dangerous, since it acts as a maraka, a Badhakesha and a possessor of Kendradhipati-dosha.
  18. The characteristics of a person born in a particular drekkana:
  • 1st drekkana (00° –10° 00′ of Sagittarius): attains a high position by their own efforts, spiritual interests, healthy habits, a gentle character, industriousness.

Lagna in Sagittarius. Sagittarius in Vedic astrology

Sagittarius is represented in jyotish in the form of an archer's bow — an image implying the ability to gain victory over enemies. Loosing their arrows, the representatives of Sagittarius aim high. They fully satisfy their passion for competitions and victories by engaging in sport. Since the lord of their lagna, Jupiter, nurtures enmity towards no graha (although it itself has enemies), the natives of Sagittarius lagna easily overcome their enemies in fair open struggle. Sagittarius is an active, action-oriented, masculine sign. This tendency is further strengthened by the fact that Venus in their chart is at once the lord of the 6th house (enemies) and of the 11th house (friends). And since Venus displays enmity towards Jupiter, the friends of a Sagittarius may in time become their enemies, and their enemies — friends.

Sagittarius people are usually straightforward and somewhat coarse in words, because Capricorn, ruled by the abrupt, straightforward Saturn, occupies their second house (the house of speech), in which Jupiter is in fall. The second house also rules finances, and this fact creates difficulties for them in economising money: Sagittarius natives not infrequently suffer from their immoderate generosity and prodigality. (Jupiter, representing money, being for them the ruler of the lagna, makes native Sagittarians generous and inclined to render help to people, responsive to another's misfortune.) Mercury, the ruler of houses 7 and 10, inclines Sagittarius natives to one or another kind of mental labour, and besides makes it possible for them to combine various occupations (parallel careers), since the intellectual and dual Mercury (together with Jupiter) is the significator of their 10th house. Mars for them rules both the 5th house, i.e. Aries (children), and the 12th house — Scorpio (loss), but this by no means in all Sagittarius natives has a pernicious effect on progeny, because Aries is for Mars a mulatrikona. Since a mulatrikona is stronger than any other constellation under the rulership of the same planet, the positive meanings of the fifth house in this case surpass the negative influence coming from the twelfth house.

Many indications of their horoscope incline Sagittarius natives to interests and pursuits of a spiritual nature. Sagittarius is the ninth house of the natural zodiac; the Sun, symbolising the soul, is at once the lord and significator of the 9th house of Sagittarius; the lord of its lagna is Jupiter, the significator of spirituality; and this given that the Sun and Jupiter are mutual friends. Further, Jupiter is the lord of the 4th house (happiness, joy), and this means that spiritual searchings may become a source of happiness for a Sagittarius. Sagittarius is a happy lagna, bringing good fortune — because the Sun rules its 9th house (fortune, luck), and because the lord of the lagna, Jupiter, is exalted in the 8th house, thereby protecting from losses or failures.

Robert Svoboda

Sagittarius — is the positive sign of Jupiter, the mutable sign of fire, the thighs of the Cosmic Man. Its symbols are the horse, the centaur or the archer. As sign number nine it indicates virtuousness, mercy, perfection and complete harmony (9 = 3 x 3), and also the manifestation of will in action.

People born under the influence of Sagittarius express the positive side of Jupiterian energy. They are characterised by optimism and a constructive frame of mind, elevation of spirit, high moral principles, and also a religious or philosophical cast of mind. In them a sense of legality and justice is strongly developed. As a rule, a Sagittarius is ardent, friendly and striking. They strive to put their principles into practice and diligently seek to be noticed. Having opened themselves to the influence of some social forces, they easily take up their active support and propagation. But on the other hand, having fallen under the power of some dogma, they may become excessively conservative, law-abiding and didactic.

Sagittarius natives make good lawyers, religious figures and businessmen. They love to display generosity and openness, but at the same time they strive not to go beyond the bounds of the conventions accepted in the society, group or organisation to which they belong. A Sagittarius possesses a critical and demanding mind, they are firm in their convictions, but, which is not rare for this type, inclined to self-satisfaction. At times they turn out to be excessively fastidious and seek out shortcomings in everything, without noticing their own limitations.

Sagittarius natives love sport, but by no means always possess a spirit of rivalry: they simply like to be out in nature, in remote places, under the open sky, far from civilisation. Many of them perceive life as a game or a theatre, on account of which they at times turn out to be excessively indulgent towards their own weaknesses or towards the shortcomings of their surroundings. Sagittarius — is one who, it seems, will never settle down. They are often lucky in life, and fortune sails into their hands of its own accord. The whole world is favourably disposed towards them and fulfils their desires almost instantly. Not infrequently Sagittarius natives receive a large inheritance from their father or other relatives. A Sagittarius is useful to any enterprise, since they bring to every matter their irrepressible enthusiasm and prove to be a kind, devoted friend. And for all their good fortune in the material world a Sagittarius usually also preserves an aspiration towards the higher and an urge to a religious or spiritual life.

RESULTS OF BIRTH IN DHANU LAGNA [Sagittarius]

«Jataka-Bharanam» 13:9. A person whose birth occurred in Dhanu Lagna will take firm decisions, will have a good grasp of royal (governmental) work, will be handsome, educated (wise, reasonable), and will know the arts and the science of archery.

Commentary: Dhanu [Sagittarius] is a Rashi [sign] of dual nature. Like the Rashi Mesha [Aries] and Simha [Leo] its primary element is Fire (‘Agni’). A person born with Dhanu Lagna will be very energetic. Such a person is impetuous (impulsive) by character. There is in them a rare enthusiasm for their goal (to the point of mania), on account of which they may seem egoistic. They are hasty in everything. They can act more skilfully and quickly compared with people of other Lagnas. They love to travel. However long the journey may be, they will show no signs of laziness in travelling. They believe that one's whole life can be lived beautifully. A double standard in world-view and thinking in their field of action (profession) is characteristic of them; therefore their ideas, domestic and social life are, as a rule, subject to double standards.

Their thoughts are easy to guess from their actions. Guru [Jupiter] is the ruler of this Lagna; therefore such a person will be compassionate, inclined to religiosity, will be very interested in philosophy, will respect principles (rules) and laws, will be open-hearted (spontaneous), frank and will speak clearly, directly. They will bring benefit to society. When they meet their friends, they show strong feelings towards them. For their comfort and the acquisition of property they will spend money «beyond their means»

One born with Dhanu Lagna is close to economics. They are exceptionally realistic, and may be a religious preacher or a social worker. In any case they will be a very important person. If in their chart of birth there is an aspect of Shani [Saturn] to Guru [Jupiter], then they will be a traditionalist and a strict adherent of rules, laws and ideals; they will create some idea and then will be focused and persistent in achieving it; this is the result of the aspect of Shani.

If Mangala [Mars] and Surya [the Sun] are in a favourable position, then the native will definitely achieve success in examinations. In the charts of birth of such a person there are several Yogas [combinations] of losses owing to the fact that they take a decision too quickly and carry it out too hastily. But even then they will be able to correct their mistakes adequately. It is in their character to begin a new undertaking in a new way.

The author of the treatise «Jataka-Parijata» writes of such people: A person born in Dhanu Lagna will be educated and reasonable, will become excellent (the best) in their family, rich and well known.

According to «Man-Sagri» a person with Dhanu Lagna will be prudent (wise), possessing religious inclinations, educated, foremost in their family and supporting it.
