The Moon in the 12th house: The Moon here gives bad results (quarrels, illnesses, debts). They are sad, lazy and have many enemies. The person has to work hard. They find work in hospitals, children’s homes, prisons and other similar institutions. A damaged Moon gives diseases of the eyes. If the Moon is heavily damaged, the person may end up in prison during the dasha period of the Moon. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)

The Moon in the 12th house will deprive the owner of the horoscope of good food and grain, and will plunge him into wastefulness and expenditure. Endowed with an irascible and irritable character, he will earn money by dubious means. The owner of the horoscope will have numerous liaisons with women. With a favourable conjunction of the Moon the owner of the horoscope will be merciful, learned, surrounded by a multitude of friends, and after his death he will go to a better world. A ruinous conjunction of the Moon will plunge the owner of the horoscope into the lower worlds.
Comments:
The 12th house is the strongest dusthana and is regarded as the house of loss. Thus the Moon loses all its good characteristics in this house and, being weakened by a ruinous conjunction or a negative aspect, will bring the person an unhappy, amoral and immoral life. The 12th house speaks of the next life, and a negative influence on the Moon will draw the owner of the horoscope into a chain of impious deeds which, according to the karmic laws and reincarnation, will condition the embodiment of the soul on the lower planets. With a favourable conjunction of the Moon this may be avoided. The Vedas describe that the material Universe has three worlds, or three regions: the deva lokas, the manushya lokas and the adho lokas, corresponding to the manifestation of sattva guna, rajo guna and tamo guna (the qualities of material nature). According to the laws of reincarnation the individual soul, or atma, takes a birth conditioned by the karma of the living being and by the predominant guna.
Being in a dusthana, the Moon will also spoil the characteristics of the house which it owns. For example, with Pisces rising the Moon is the lady of the 5th house, and its placement in the 12th house may bring the loss of a child; while with Capricorn rising the Moon is the lady of the 7th house and, consequently, the destruction of the marriage or the early death of the spouse may be expected, and so on.
The placement of such a strong planet as the Moon in a dusthana speaks of a predominance of negative karma, therefore in this life such a person will be unfortunate, will endure want and privation, will have an inclination towards the use of drugs, and will love solitude and seclusion. The Moon, as the matri karaka, being in the 12th house, speaks of difficult relations with the mother or of her sickliness. And only under the influence of a “saving” aspect from a favourable planet or a conjunction with one may the positive characteristics of the 12th house manifest — a striving for charity, an interest in spiritual practices. The presence of the Moon in the sign of Cancer in its own house is also considered sufficiently favourable, and in the absence of malefic influence success through the occult sciences or renunciation of worldly affairs, and the attainment of recognition and respect, await the owner of the horoscope.
Besides this, the placement of the lord of a dusthana in a dusthana creates viparita raja yoga, the result of which will be the neutralisation of the negative characteristics described above.
Other opinions concerning the Moon (Chandra) in the 12th house:
“Brihat Jataka” — the owner of the horoscope will be of an evil disposition and will have defects of the limbs.
“Phaladipika” — a person will become lazy, unhappy, unloved by others and enduring humiliation from those around if the Moon in his horoscope occupies the 12th house.
“Saravali” — the owner of the horoscope will be envious, lazy, restless, and devoid of talents and abilities. Diseases of the eyes are to be expected.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — the owner of the horoscope will have many enemies, will encounter obstacles and calamities in his life, and will suffer from eye diseases. He will spend his money on good causes. He will have difficult relations with his mother and with his relatives. All the efforts of the owner of the horoscope will prove vain or fruitless.
Note: All the classical texts describe negative characteristics of the placement of the Moon in the 12th house. The “Chamatkar Chintamani” says that the owner of the horoscope will spend money on good aims, but this will happen only with a favourable aspect to the Moon.

THE RESULTS OF THE PLACEMENT OF CHANDRA IN THE 12TH BHAVA
If Chandra is placed in the 12th Bhava, then the person has no good character (behaviour) and has no friends, he suffers from diseases of the eyes, is prone to anger, and he has many enemies.
Comments: Thanks to the placement of Chandra in the 12th Bhava the person is emotional and sentimental, with a strong imagination, and therefore desires imaginary, illusory happiness. He leaves his homeland and lives in some other region of his country or abroad. If Chandra is in a Rashi [sign] of a fiery (‘Agni’) nature, is devoid of strength and is subject to bad influence, then the person is prone to anger, impetuous, his body is lean and thin, and he harms himself by his own bad actions. Therefore people are suspicious of him. Besides this, because of such a placement of Chandra the person suffers from insults.
