The results given by Mercury in the fourth house of the horoscope
Mercury in the fourth house: This is the house of education; all the authors say that when Mercury is there alone or with favourable planets, the person will be able to obtain a good education, and his work may be connected with education. Such a placement gives a happy family, comfortable cars and frequent trips to foreign countries. He may change his place of residence several times. If Mercury is in a good sign, the person becomes very wealthy. A very good placement for the wife. If Mercury is in conjunction with Venus or Jupiter, these results are strengthened.
Retrograde Mercury in the 4th house: In the past the person created disharmony around himself. He was quick-tempered and nervous and behaved boorishly in conversations with those who were near him. In this life he needs to learn to take himself in hand and to treat those around him kindly. (Mahesh Dharmadasa)
Mercury (Buddha) in the 4th house
Mercury in the 4th house. A good education, sincerity, a love of travel, an attachment to family life, the ownership of property and means of transport, an inclination towards astrology. Help from relatives is possible; a person with such a position of Mercury is loved by his parents, and he himself becomes a good father or mother. (Indubala)
Mercury in the 4th house: good health, achievements in study, frequent changes of place of residence. Mercury in the 1st, 4th or 10th house in its own sign makes the person very tactful. Such a person, however, may be insincere. (Shri Govind Swarup Agarwal)
“Bhrigu Sutra” 4.32-37
The owner of the horoscope will have huge eyes and deft, skilful hands. He will be patient, educated and happy with parental love. From Mercury in the 4th house in his 16th year of life he will acquire wealth by dubious means and will own means of transport. If the lord of the 4th house is strong, then the owner of the horoscope will have his own palanquin. When Mercury is conjunct with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, the owner of the horoscope will lose his landed property and means of transport. He will be untruthful and hostilely disposed towards his relatives.
Comments:
Very benefic results are ascribed to Mercury when it is placed alone in the 4th house, and when the lord of the 4th house is strong. Bad characteristics arise in the case of a conjunction of Mercury with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn. If Mercury is in its own sign or its sign of exaltation, bhadra yoga arises, described above. With an unafflicted Mercury placed in a friendly sign good results are also to be expected.
It must be noted that in sutra 34 the words dravyapahara rupena should be read as dravyopahara rupena. The meaning of the sutra will then be: “in the 16th year of his life he will receive wealth as a gift”.
In the modern age by the palanquin of which Bhrigu Muni speaks one should understand prestigious means of transport or makes of car.
Other opinions concerning Mercury in the 4th house:
“Brihat Jataka” — the owner of the horoscope will become a scholar.
“Phaladipika” — education, wealth, happiness, the ownership of landed property, good friends and such a negative quality as a love of flattery.
“Saravali” — the owner of the horoscope will be wealthy, educated, will own means of transport and beautiful clothes and will have good relatives.
“Chamatkar Chintamani” — wisdom, faithful friends, an absence of inherited property. The possibility of work with finances in the government.
Note: All the classical texts note favourable results of the placement of Mercury in the 4th house. The “Chamatkar Chintamani”, however, says that the owner of the horoscope will lose his inherited property. This will probably happen if the lord of the 4th house is placed in the dusthanas or Mercury is in the 4th house as the lord of these bad houses.

The results of the placement of Mercury (Buddha) in the 4th house
With Buddha in the 4th Bhava the person will become the owner of an exceptional means of transport, will prosper in wealth and in the acquisition of grain, is interested in music and dance, and is endowed with knowledge, education and jewels.
Comments: The placement of Buddha [Mercury] in the 4th Bhava [house] is considered favourable. This Graha [planet] rules the intellect, and the 4th Bhava is the Bhava of the heart, the soul and the mind; therefore the placement of Buddha in the 4th Bhava should be understood as a union of emotions and intellect. If Buddha is in a benefic Rashi [sign] and receives a benefic influence, then the person takes very balanced, considered and effective decisions, thanks to which he obtains, and moreover without great effort, all kinds of material comfort: a good house, a means of transport, popularity, lands and the like. The person’s memory is sharp, he is logical in his judgements, and there is scarcely anything that can be set against his arguments. Thanks to the power of his intellect he is successful in happiness and worldly comfort. He may reflect for a long time on “to do or not to do” before taking a decision, but will show firmness in the decision made. Mercury is connected with craft, drawing, the making of sketches (schemes) and musical instruments, therefore a person with Mercury in the 4th house is interested in these things. His proposals are considered, rational and witty. He will prove that he can be a good adviser. He has no interest in physical activity. Thanks to the placement of Buddha in the 4th Bhava perceptiveness grows in the person. But if Buddha is in a ruinous Rashi and receives the influence of malefic Grahas, then the person will suffer losses because of some of his friends, will encounter public censure or accusation, ill will and conflicts with those close to him and, of course, there will be obstacles in his education; the person will be inclined to employ cunning or treachery and will commit betrayal.
