18. Jyeshtha (16W — 30°00′ of Scorpio)
Varahamihira: Those who have the Moon in Jyeshtha have very few friends, but they themselves are cheerful, kind and hot-tempered.
General indications: The symbol of Jyeshtha is a round amulet, and its ruling deity is Indra, the king of the gods.
A talisman (amulet) is the material embodiment of knowledge about occult and hidden forces. This may equally signify either the provision of protection from some danger or calamity or the receiving of it, and also the capacity for subtle, inventive and imaginative designs. Many hymns of the Vedas glorify Indra for his fearless exploits, power, glory, renown and other qualities worthy of praise. All these properties are inherent in this nakshatra as well. If Jyeshtha indicates a benefit, it may be obtained by supernatural, occult or extraordinary means, but, being afflicted, Jyeshtha foretells hard times and poverty. For example, Saturn in Jyeshtha, in the 2nd house of money (all other things being equal), may signify a serious shortage of means of subsistence. The lagna or the Moon here often signify duplicity, hypocrisy and secretiveness.
Jyeshtha means «the eldest», especially in a social context, in which it appears as «the chief», «the principal» or «the best». Seniority or superiority based on preference or merit are here juxtaposed with protection and patronage, because the eldest in Hindu families is often considered the patron and protector of the whole family. A Jyeshtha person may be the patriarch or «matriarch» of the family, the elder brother, sister or child in the family, and may also be the most preferred lover among others. If, for example, the lord of the 7th house of marriage is located in Jyeshtha, it inclines one to marriage with a person who is older or with a person who is the eldest in their family (all other things being equal). The same principle of interpretation may be applied to other houses as well.

The key concept
Applying one’s own experience to the proper use of resources in order to obtain maximum profit while maintaining unchanging energy and enthusiasm.
Jyeshtha is considered the eldest among the first eighteen nakshatras. Its main task is the radical transformation of a person and the acceleration of the path of his spiritual evolution.
Jyeshtha is a nakshatra where maintaining an image is far more important than anything else. Jyeshtha personalities are, as a rule, concerned about how others perceive them. They want to win respect in society and do everything necessary to adhere to the prevailing standards. In ancient times, when the steps to a respected position were acts of mercy, kindness and charity, Jyeshtha worked well. At the present time, when rabid materialism is the norm, the energies of Jyeshtha are spent in vain or on self-destruction. The stereotypical leader of the mob, the corrupt and unreasonable politician, bureaucrat or executive — these are the types of Jyeshtha.
As a rule, those who have the ascendant in Jyeshtha, or who have it somehow connected with the Lagna, mature quickly physically and mentally. They have good proportional bodies, but they are not able to retain their youth for long. Their upper body is stronger than the lower. The simplest way to recognise them is to pay attention to their perceptive and searching gaze.
Jyeshtha people are inclined to exaggerate their troubles and misfortunes. Rancour and vindictiveness are inherent in them. They easily become victims of jealousy and are always in search of a victim. What makes them display their skills to the full is a strong competitive spirit, not an inner need.
The magnanimity of Jyeshtha people consists in their ability to become the defender of the weak, the helpless and the deprived. They purify themselves by throwing themselves headlong into danger to help others. Besides keeping their word, they always bear responsibility for the matters they are engaged in. However, at times their responsibility and striving to protect are excessive. At the present moment the functioning of Jyeshtha is mainly limited to service in the police and other Martian occupations.
On the whole Jyeshtha is the place where new creative energies arise, the place where a person’s inner life comes to the surface. The outward manifestations of this nakshatra depend greatly on a person’s spiritual level: an undeveloped soul may become arrogant and pompous, a developed one will reveal to the world all the meek essence of the Divine light.
They have a mixture of strength and arrogance, pride and irritability, and therefore trials — both spiritual and material — often accompany them. The Moon in Jyeshtha gives the feeling that their problems never end, that after one blow comes a second, a third, and so on in a circle. Fame and honour are important to them; there may be strong materialism. But at the same time they have excellent analytical abilities, since the ruler of this star is Mercury. With bad aspects there may be poverty, loneliness and hypocrisy.

They are hardy, have an attractive appearance and look proud, and are easily recognisable by certain defects of the teeth, for example a gap, an incorrect bite or the colour of the enamel.
In Jyeshtha men a sober mind is combined with hot temper and a fiery temperament, even obsessiveness. They do not know how to keep their own or other people’s secrets and do not listen to anyone’s advice. On principle they can take decisions instantly, without taking the situation into account. Subsequently this haste leads to problems. They may become addicted to various kinds of intoxicants (the consumption of alcohol and the like).
They do not receive benefit from blood relatives, leave the parental home early and live in a foreign land.
They are responsible and neat. They may advance quickly in the service and often change profession and place of work. The most troubled period of life is 18—26 years. From the age of 27 a slow rise begins, but only after 50 does everything in life become stable.
It may be harmonious if the passion for intoxicants is overcome. Separations from the wife for various reasons, up to and including divorce, are possible.
They are distinguished by sickliness. Respiratory illnesses with a high temperature, pain in the shoulders and arms, dysentery and problems with the gastrointestinal tract are possible.
Women
Jyeshtha women are broad-boned and muscular, usually above average height. They have broad faces and curly hair. They love sport.
They are emotional and clever, have organisational abilities, become strongly attached and know how to love deeply. They are impressionable and jealous, and are usually interested in other people’s opinion of them. They have a secondary education and try to find fulfilment in the family, promoting the advancement and well-being of their spouse.
There is a lack of harmony in relations with the spouse and of mutual understanding with the husband’s relatives. They may be childless. And if they do bear children, they do not find a common language with them and in old age may receive no help from their children.
The padas (quarters)
The 1st pada of the nakshatra Jyeshtha (16°40′ — 20°00′ of Scorpio) falls into the navamsha of Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter. It gives anxiety with regard to finances and good writing abilities. A sense of humour, pride and a chivalrous attitude towards family and close ones are inherent in the natives. In this pada the Sun, Mars, Ketu and especially Jupiter are strong. Planets placed in this pada are unfavourable for the well-being of brothers and sisters.
The 2nd pada of the nakshatra Jyeshtha (20°00′ — 23°20′ of Scorpio) falls into the navamsha of Capricorn under the rulership of Saturn. The characteristic traits of natives who are under the rulership of this pada are responsibility, authoritativeness, correctness and a striving to attain their goals. On the whole their life is prosperous, but their health may be weak. When a planet is afflicted, manifestations of selfishness, stinginess and vindictiveness are possible. The 3rd pada of the nakshatra Jyeshtha (23°20′ — 26°40′ of Scorpio) falls into the navamsha of Aquarius, ruled by Saturn. A person may be a philanthropist, a defender of the weak and the deprived. The 4th pada of the nakshatra Jyeshtha (26°40′ — 30°00′ of Scorpio) falls into the navamsha of Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. It gives excessive emotionality, an inclination to have one’s head in the clouds, to indulge in sensual pleasures and to fall into dependence on various kinds of intoxicants. In its lowest manifestation the pada makes one fantasise about personal misfortunes and troubles and lead an unhealthy way of life, while in its highest it can give self-sacrifice and philanthropy. Venus and Jupiter strengthen the favourable aspect of the pada. Mars acts badly in this pada. Saturn gives material adversities, but may be useful for acquiring spiritual discipline.
The ruling planet
The main ruler of Jyeshtha is Mercury. In this nakshatra its energy is purified of deceitfulness, cunning and childishness and becomes more serious, directed towards the control of the scattered mind and of mass consciousness. Jyeshtha people may be called the police of the world.
Mars, the lord of Scorpio, supports the policeman’s mentality and provides energy and initiative. It may suppress the receptive Mercury: many cases of deceit and abuse of authority are connected with Jyeshtha. Mercury makes Jyeshtha a chameleon whose values are based not on an understanding of things but on the opinion of its surroundings.

Jyeshtha is a group of three stars of a reddish colour, the brightest of which, a star of the 1st magnitude, is called Antares.
Jyeshtha is a demonic star of a low nature, strong and sharp in its character. In translation Jyeshtha means «the eldest», «the leader» and gives a person born under its influence the ability to attain a leading position.
The presiding deity is the head of the demigods, Indra.

Among all the nakshatras, Jyeshtha and Mula are considered special.
