Astrological yogas — combinations of planets
The ancient sages told us of hundreds of different yogas. Among them there are important combinations, easy to remember, which should be kept in mind when analysing a horoscope:
a) the Pancha-mahapurusha yogas: Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Mercury or Mars in a kendra in exaltation or in its own sign;
b) the 28 Maha yogas: a mutual exchange of the rulers of good houses;
c) the Viparita-raja yogas: a mutual connection between the dusthanas and their rulers;
d) the Raja yogas: a connection of the rulers of a kendra and a trikona;
e) the Dhana yogas: a connection of the lords of the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th with good houses;
f) the Nicha-bhanga-raja yogas;
g) the Lagnadi and Chandradi yogas;
h) a conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of signs between the lords of the sign of the Lagna and of the sign of the Moon;
i) Amala yoga;
j) Gaja-kesari yoga;
k) the Shubhakartari yogas: the placement of a bhava, a planet or a karaka between benefic planets;
l) Parijata yoga: the dispositor of the dispositor of the Lagnesha in a good house.
The yogas listed above exert a beneficent action on a person’s life, and also remove the obstructions and harmful doshas present in the horoscope.
And now let us pass on to the evil yogas, which can badly spoil good combinations:
a) Shakata yoga: the Moon and Jupiter in a mutual position of 6/8 or 2/12;
b) the eight Khala yogas: an exchange of signs or another connection between the lord of the 3rd house and the rulers of good bhavas;
c) Dainya yoga: mutual exchanges between the rulers of the dusthanas and of good houses.
d) Kalasarpa yoga: all the planets are placed on one side of the lunar nodes.
Notes on astrological yogas
— A yoga noticeably strengthens the potential of the house in which it is placed. For example, a conjunction of the rulers of the 9th and 10th houses in the 12th forms a yoga, but because of its stay in a dusthana its results will not be especially impressive; the significations of the 12th house, on the other hand, will receive a good impulse for development.
— Some yogas may fail to bring the expected fruits because of a bad placement or an unfortunate condition of their dispositors.
— The general condition of the rulers of the nakshatras in which the planets forming the yoga are placed introduces its own corrections into the functioning of the yoga.
— The weakness of the participants of a yoga, or of the rulers of their nakshatras, lowers the productivity of the yoga.
— If the planets forming a yoga are in hostile relations, the effectiveness of the yoga is diminished, whereas friendly relations between the planets allow the yoga to work at full strength.
